What's your thoughts on the drumless version of RAM? I tried to listen to it, and my initial thoughts on it were "why?" For me drums give any song more energy, and drumless Daft Punk songs just sound flatter than a pancake. Was it to fulfill an album contract or something?

if by point you mean drum, then definitely yes
It didn’t snare you?
My theory is that it's a piece of fan service for those who'd like to sample RAM but use their own beats/drums.
Yeah this is what I always presumed. I don't really get a normal listener putting this on because it sounds just strange with zero drums on it.
Whenever I tune large systems for concerts, the game of love drumless does an excellent job illustrating the full range capabilities of subwoofers without getting drowned out by the kick.
huge brain move lowkey
I have another theory, which is that Daft Punk had a multi-album contract to release over a certain period, and that they therefore released the anniversary album and the drumless album to conclude and finish this contract.
100% this more for djs to or producers to make their own drums and not have to worry about the drums already on the track
But everything still needs clearing? And it’s owned by a huge label so good luck. It’s an obvious cash grab lol
I'm not sure Daft Life is a huge label. To my understanding, Columbia only has a distribution license. But I actually am curious how difficult the process of clearing samples with Daft Life would be, and if anyone has actually done it with samples off of the drumless edition.
But yeah I agree, though I'll say it's a fairly tasteful cashgrab. The narrative of them building a career from sampling records and ending it by putting out a record that is easier to be sampled by others seems appropriate imo.
Probably used mostly by producers who aren't making any money anyway. So clearance is not a big deal
Then why not just release the files of the tracks? A Vinyl release is pointless for sampling in this day and age.
i think because they don’t wanna just give out files they don’t want you to take out anything to their song or better yet the record label doesn’t want you to do that and i mean their secrets can be revealed without having to really listen. but i’ve heard and maybe even seen not sure how really that it works but AI will be able to take and add and replace parts of a song like take out a guitar track or soemthing idk not sure how true or real it is but sure it could be accomplished at some point
Drumless Motherboard is even more of a masterpiece imo
lol i love both versions. motherboard will be a masterpiece in any configuration
Same. It's nice to be able to hear the synths and flutes more clearly, but it has really nice drums as well
contact drumless is a pretty interesting listen too (to me). hearing some electronics that’s slowly breaking and crumbling up like it’s going farther and farther out
THANK YOU I don’t understand why more people don’t talk about Motherboard. The meltdown is pure insanity I remember losing my mind hearing that back in 2013
It gives a completely new atmosphere to it
As a drummer, it makes it better for me to practice the songs now! I can just do whatever drum stuff i feel like when listening and playing to it
Some songs feel empty without the drums like doin' it right or contact but others like the game of love or motherboard give the songs a different perspective and I think that makes it feel special
No, because it’s not pointless. It seems that way on the surface but lemme explain.
While it sounds like the drums are just peeled back and removed, the omission of the drums changes the feeling and depth that some tracks have, going from this deep, impactful sound with these powerful hits for the rhythm to a less intense, more laidback and looser feeling. It’s not as powerful, but it feels more spacious and freeing, rather than rhythmic and strong.
Some of the slower songs, I’ve noticed, benefit greatly from this lack of drums. It changes the entire feel of Instant Crush, The Game Of Love, and Within. And that shift in feel, that change in the sound happens with just the removal of the drums.
It’s strange, and it seems pointless, but it’s one of those things you need to sit back and listen to.
I honestly love it. Especially having it on in the background.
Exactly my way of listening to it. Just in the background, either to work or to chill with great music
wait for the musicless edition
It already dropped. Listen to it at LEAST once a day.
Me too, the sound of it is unescapable
Happy Cake Day!
I like it very much. It's so nice being able to hear all the details of the synths, bass, electric and acoustic guitars...which were covered by the drums before
It's not pointless; it might be marketing, but for me, the album is meant to be listened to in Dolby Atmos. The absence of drums allows you to notice everything, every detail: the ambience, the pianos, the bass, the vocoders.
My dream wish is that instead of drumless, daft punk got a bunch of animation studios to create short films for each song and then package that as a RAM film for theatres
I’m obsessed with synth arpeggios and sequencers, so to me it’s absolutely wild hearing all this.
Interesting to see people come around to this one!! My most controversial opinion has always been that this album would have fared sooo much better in the fandom eye if they leaned super hard into the esoteric weirdness of it and really went hard on the "artistic release" components. Weird premise, ethereal artwork, the missing ingredient was self-awareness. I've always been a Drumless truther just because I personally just really enjoy weird releases like this and I really really adore the aesthetics surrounding it.
Daft "film-famous for audience walkouts" Punk not realizing a drumless(????) version of a 10-year-old album was NOT the kind of release you pretend is normal... I understood her vision!! Drumless you will always be important to me girl!!
LOVE THIS ALBUM!!!
I have a pair of technics. It’s great for mixing
My glaze sees no bounds ill eat up anything they dish at me
Flatter than a pancake... so crapés?
Makes stem extraction easier so there's that. It's def more of a novelty/gimmicky release though
As a standalone, it's like a solid 7/10. But it has insane potential for DJ sets and Remixes.
I would have liked a Musicque volume 2 other than this
Eh yeah. It's good for the people who like it. But this would have been a cool Daft Club revival. Not another album to pay money for.
Drumless Within and Drumless Motherboard is better than with Drums, but Drumless Contact just makes no sense cause it’s caring 70% of the track
It gave us the instrumentals in Dolby Atmos for one thing
UPDATE Ok I've given it another spin, and I will admit that some songs do sound good without drums. But some of them do sound flat. Like Giorgio By Moroder. The bit where he talks about putting a "click" on the track, and there's no click. It defeats the purpose of the song I think
Lol
Not if you like making remixes. The Acapella version of Jay-Z's The Black Album introduced us all to so many new dj and beat conductors.
I love it
I still prefer it with drums, but drumless instant crush sounds pretty cool
Possibly.
drumless get lucky haunts my nightmares
i really think it’s just meant to be sampled, although i did get a kick out of listening to fragments of time without the drums
100%. Everyone says "oh but it's for drummers" as if they couldn't have released that on YouTube for free rather than as its own album with CD and vinyl
Some people have drum allergies. Not too many artists are catering to those fans.
As a drummer yeah i see the point. But other than soundmixers, producers and drummers, this allbum will feel like more of a pointless cashgrab, yeah. Because outside of those, just as someone who listens to music and not some kind of musician or whatever, it sounds so dead because you know what they sound like WITH drums. Like the funk songs? Geez. The drum solo part of Giorgio Moroder, there are parts where theyre off-sync to each other because there is no drumtrack to anchor everything. And dont get me started on Contact, my favorite song in the album. The drumtrack is the star of at least that one song, and to remove it is near blasphemy.
Technically, it reveals a lot and is probably useful but no i dont see much value to it beyond that. Id like to say as a huge fan that the songs sound absolutely amazing even without drums, and thats probably true, but maybe it is BECAUSE i am a drummer that i see the huge loss to them. I appreciate this release but i dont actively come back to it often.
But thats just me
I think you should listen to within drumless and rethink your decision to post this
Yes and it is indeed good without drums. However the likes of Lose Yourself To Dance, Get Lucky, Giorgio By Moroder and Instant Crush sound awful. One good song isn't enough to save it for me and I stand by my opinion that the album as a whole is pointless
Dooope
Where is my drumless version of Homework gdamnit?
yes.
fragments of time without the drums is lowkey still a banger as much as the with drum edition
I personally thought it was cool seeing how the songs sounded without drums.
I, for one, have been wishing for a ‘voiceless edition’ since April 19, 2013.
Every vinyl DJ I know has a copy of this, I think it might just not be for you.
I always thought of this album as Thomas missing Guy. Me mostly plays drums. This is what it’s like without him.
Im not really aware about what instruments were played by each of them; Could u let me know which instrument was each one of them specialised in and contributed in majority of the songs
Not sure why I’m being downvoted for something people can look up themselves. Although he isn’t listed at the MAIN drummer for this album that title goes to Omar Hakim. Guy did play multi-instruments including drums and guitar for all the albums

There was zero contractual obligation to Columbia to make anything post-RAM lol. Todd went on record as this being Thomas’ idea in specific
In short, yes. Certainly the most pointless Daft Punk album.
rent was due
