Hi all,
Hi all,
I live in a flat in a high-rise building and don’t have access to the central boiler. I’d like to control the heating in my flat with a thermostat, but I’m not sure how to do this. I’ve read that Z-Wave radiator valves could be an option.
Can anyone advise on the best way to add heating control in this type of property?
zigbee/wifi radiator valve + home assistant
If you don't need a remote thermostat/remote control then just throw on an old school mechanical or digital thermostat on the radiator(s)
Edit: there are also "all in one" solutions like https://www.aqara.com/en/product/radiator-thermostat-e1/ with external sensor support
Hi thanks for the answer. I thought about wifi radiators but i am worried about issues with internet. Do i need both zigbee and wifi radiotrs? Does zigbee include thermostat itself?
Many can be used with a local controller like e.g. home assistant and/or will run in local mode with the last set settings if no network is available.
Personally I would always run a local controller instead of relying on a cloud service
I prefer local, any suggestion what to pick?
Ask your building maintenance for help.
with knowing what each apartment does locally for heat and cooling, it’s tough to answer.
old nyc apt can be infamous for getting way too much heat,
with ancient radiators that diy'ers do not want to mess with.
a diy solution can be putting an exhaust fan in the bathroom
or kitchen that turns on:off based on your own diy thermostat.
so instead of controlling radiator heat, you control cooler air flow.
if your apt is too cold, consider removing window ac's so you
can fully close your windows in winter and lock in limited heat.
dealing with high pressure radiator plumbing is not the same
as replacing a sink faucet, so diy'ers should consider the liability
if they get it wrong, like leak damage to apt below you.
How DO you control the heat to your unit? Do you have any control at all now?
