Hello everyone,
I have 3 Christmas baubles with very small LED lights inside (connected in series). I would like to dim these baubles using a single dimmer, as the light is currently too bright.
Each bauble currently has its own power supply with the following information:
CZJUTAI POWER SUPPLY
MODEL: JT-DC4.5V6W-HS-IP44
Input: 220-240V~ 50-60Hz 0.12A
Urated = 4.5V Prated = 6W
Uout = 6V
There’s a sticker on the cable going to the light bauble with the following information:
Article number: 19111692
Model number: TX-CW-300L-4.5V
Production code: KE3525
Power consumption: 6W
Input: 230V, 50Hz
Output: 4.5VDC / 6VA
Light: 300 LEDs / Warm white
I’m a little bit technical, but I could really use your help :-)
So in total, I need a power supply capable of 18 WATTS (3 x 6 Watts).
I think I need a PWM dimmer. Ideally, I’d like to control it with a remote, but that’s not essential.
Can you advise which dimmer and power supply (possibly a combined unit?) I should purchase?
As far as I understand, I need:
- Power supply (230V → 5V) with at least 18 Watts
- PWM dimmer with remote control (DC)
I've attached some photos.
Thanks so much for your help!
For fixed dimming, a 1N4007 series diode will reduce the voltage by 0.9V @1A, two diodes will reduce it by 1.8V... They cost pennies. A switch across each diode can give coarse control. If you need remote and adjustable dimming, get an LED controller made for use with 5V LED tape
Adding a diode in series with the LEDs which are powered by a 4.5V supply will not dim them, it will prevent them from illuminating at all.
The Vf of most LEDs is between 2 and 3V, depending on the color. 4.5-0.9=3.6V which should be enough voltage to light an LED. Will it be bright enough? Only OP can tell us.
Ah you're right, for some reason I was thinking there were LEDs in series
What I suggest that you look for is a "dc motor speed controller pwm" such as "RUNCCI-YUN 2pcs DC 12v PWM motor speed controller,1.8V 3V 5V 6V 12V 2A Speed Adjustable Switch Module, Variable Voltage Regulator Dimmer Governor Switching Build with LED Indicator and Switch Function"
Plus the dc power supply that you have suggested.
You MAY be able to put all three baubles in series and then run them off 16.5v via a single controller.-
Some 15v (or even 20v) power supplies have trimmers that can be used to set the output voltage over a narrow range - which may be a cheaper alternative than a 16.5v supply.
It's more likely that you will find a remote PWM motor speed controller, working off 16.5v than 5.5v
Have you tried the compatible dimmer?

You can get adjustable DC:DC converters and try powering with a lower voltage, but I doubt it will work well. To properly dim the led you need to reduce the current. Lowering the voltage a bit might help but you won’t be able to reduce it much before the voltage is too low for the LED.
Thank you all. I will buy the DC power supply and a pwm controller dimmer. I will let you know when fixed!
