A lot of it was “Will they really do it?” Comics had refused to kill anyone for a while, but we were right at the end of the Bronze Age and stuff was getting darker.
Who knows if they actually were. Probably not the majority, given the backlash DC got for it. All we know is parts of DC editorial/writers wanted it.
Also, this Story alone makes Jason such a valuable part of the Robin legacy. There are so many people constantly saying Jason was not Robin for long enough to be anyones favorite or have any impact on the role. But he absolutely did, IMO. It's so sad that DC does not get his character or the appeal he can have at all, given their stupid "Nothing but the angry Robin" BS lately.
At least Jason knows who is actually deserving. Dude he killed probably would've gotten off light knowing the justice systems attitude towards their kind.
Look up any statistics on SA [and I do mean any] and its bound to bewilder you how little the courts convict anyone of it. This isn't just the powerful I'm talking about, its seemingly normal men who are credibly accused only to be let off.
It's not even clear if he actually killed this guy. Bruce asks if he did and Jason denies it. No writer has ever said Jason killed him either, and keep in mind that writers have gone out of their way to make Jason look a lot worse than he was during his Robin days.
And who's place is it? The authorities who constantly let rapist get away with zero punishment?
I get the issue with being judge jury and executioner. But let's not pretend we had any solution that is truely, in actually working effect, that much better.
Fun fact: this was also the second story during Jason's tenure as Robin that a rapist walked free. A few issues prior to this, Bruce and Jason dealt with a serial killer who raped and murdered women before leaving their bodies in a dumpster. Bruce finds evidence that gets the killer arrested but it's thrown out due to Batman obtaining it illegally and the killer is released. He is killed by the sister of one of his victims, and the story ends with Batman telling Jason how wrong it is to take the law into your own hands. I shouldn't have to explain how absurd that sounds coming from him.
I never claimed they never killed people. Most of time when they kill it is in the heat of battle when they have reason to believe there are no other options. If they have successfully apprehended a criminal without lethal force, they will give them over to the proper authorities.

They weren’t. It was rigged and even then it barely got the votes, not to mention a good chunk were just curious if DC would actually kill a child hero.
Bruce orchestrated Jason’s murder with the Joker. He knew Jason was outpacing him and Batman really wasn’t about that life like Jason was so he had to get rid of him so he could go back to being top dog

Written by Jim Starlin, “Let’s kill off Jason Todd”’s strongest soldier.
Tried to give him AIDS too

Iirc, most fans who voted to kill only did it to dare DC.
Like, there's no way they gonna kill a Robin.
"He Felipped."

Not when you know fans it isn't!
One of the first comics I ever read. Blew my mind as a kid.

I think a lot of the comments are forgetting that people literally called in to a hotline to vote to kill Jason Todd.
Actually, this is gold. Let's get Jason Todd in an Earth-Prime story so he can exact his revenge on the callers.
Crazy how this was supposed to make him unlikable (and crazier that it worked)
At least Jason knows who is actually deserving. Dude he killed probably would've gotten off light knowing the justice systems attitude towards their kind.
It’s been forever since I’ve read it, but wasn’t the issue that he had diplomatic immunity so he wasn’t going to get in trouble at all?
Yup. He had gotten off so many times and kept raping the same woman so she killed herself and Jason walked in on her after
Elaborate on that
In the story he gets released from police custody due to his father being a diplomat

But it’s not Jason place to decide.
Yeah, but society is pretty lenient on deviants, so if it had to be anyone, they were far from the worst choice for Jason to kill.
It's not even clear if he actually killed this guy. Bruce asks if he did and Jason denies it. No writer has ever said Jason killed him either, and keep in mind that writers have gone out of their way to make Jason look a lot worse than he was during his Robin days.

It doesn’t matter letting people be vigilante and start administering punishment is a terrible recipe for disaster.
I mean, that's every single comic book hero.
Also, letting rapists walk free is also a terrible idea.

I only know the story second hand but didn’t the sister refuse to go to the cops so she could kill him herself.
And didn’t Jason give the woman his approval?
The key difference is comic book heroes stop at apprehending criminals and don’t go full lynch mob.
Actually quiet a few comic book heroes kill. And there is a fast amount of space between "No killing ever" And "going full lynch mob".
I never claimed they never killed people. Most of time when they kill it is in the heat of battle when they have reason to believe there are no other options. If they have successfully apprehended a criminal without lethal force, they will give them over to the proper authorities.
And if, as it happened in this case, the "proper authorities" Just let the criminal go again? That is the point of this discussion.
Fan, singular. A guy rigged his phone to constantly call and vote for Jason's death.
Isn't that an urban legend?
I'd do it too tbh

I don't know how that Robin costume lasted so long. Look at those boots
They weren’t. It was rigged and even then it barely got the votes, not to mention a good chunk were just curious if DC would actually kill a child hero.
We don't know if the rigged thing is true
Because DC offered and the fans voted. And honestly…as good as Under the Redhood was, Jason should have probably stayed dead.
Bruce orchestrated Jason’s murder with the Joker. He knew Jason was outpacing him and Batman really wasn’t about that life like Jason was so he had to get rid of him so he could go back to being top dog
Bruh just stop.
Damn people can't make jokes anymore?
A joke has to be funny
Eh, fair enough. Try harder next time KryptonJuice38
Stop what exactly?
