I want to read some JLD but I'm conflicted on if I should get the New 52 or Rebirth runs. I was originally looking at JLD for Zatanna so yeah

anywayyy yeah I just want to know what you guys think of these two!

  • Both are good, but the Tyrion and Ram V run build to some amazing arcs. So if you only read one, make it that one.

I’ll most likely be reading both I’m just trying to choose which one to start with

Read 52 first as that’s chronological order and it’s best to save the best for last anyway.

  • New 52's fun, but Rebirth is more fulfilling story wise. If you're going to read both like you said anyway, you might as well just read it an order and go New 52 -> Rebirth. I would have lived skipping the former, but I'm glad I read the latter.

  • I prefer rebirth. Better arcs and I much prefer the lineup.

  • I want to know too, and I want more spooky teams, goddammit!!

same I'm a sucker for supernatural spooky stories!

Right?! I love urban fantasy and DC. JLD is perfection!

still painful that guillermo del toro's jld got canned

  • Rebirth, maybe my favorite thing Tynion wrote for DC, and Ram V's work ain't no slouch either.

  • Rebirth is better by miles.

I like the New 52 book, but it is all over the place in terms of quality amd seemed to always be crossing over with other books. In the New 52, the Milligan run is just ok but is basically just an arc and then a crossover with I, Vampire. The Lemire run after is very good, but also isnt very long and then gets thrown into a crossover with Trinity War which was bad. After Trinity War, JM Dematteis takes over and JLD goes into a massive crossover called Blight with like 5 other books that is completely terrible.

Rebirth only has 2 writers and both are pretty much telling the same story throughout the entire run. It also only crosses over once with Wonder Woman. Plus it is consistently good throughout.

    This a million.

I wanted to like JLD New 52, but the constant creative shake-ups were too much. The team roster kept changing, arcs were dropped, and the series never had time to gel.

  • I love the Rebirth run but N52 is not far behind it.

  • cover art by Alvaro Martinez Bueno and Ryan Sook (correct me if I'm wrong)

Believe the rebirth one is Lee Bermejo

  • No, they are not about the same.

    Rebirth is much better.

  • Tynions run just felt a lot more balanced and had a lot more standout arcs

The adding of WW and Man bat gave a lot more of an interesting dynamic and is probably the best WW book for a good while.

Only problem is it has Tynions Constantine which is not great

  • TL;DR Rebirth is better.

New 52: Milligan’s run is disappointing, mostly worth checking out if you’re a Milligan/Vertigo fan that’s curious. DeMatteis’ run is actually pretty interesting, but it drags under the weight of the crossovers. I don’t remember what happened in between.

Rebirth: Tynion’s run is a lot of fun, and the most satisfying package overall. Ram V’s run could have been the best, but it ends very abruptly.

  • They're probably about the same. They're fairly different from each other but both good.

  • Rebirth is a more satisfying read, but I’m a sucker for anything Madame Xanadu so I prefer the New 52 slightly.

  • I like rebirth better personally but both are fun. The biggest problem with tye new 52 JLD is that it gets really tied up in a couple of events that were happening (trinity war and forever evil I think, it's been a while) which means if you only have the JLD trades like I did you're missing chunks of the story.

Returned a JLD tpb to LCS to replace with the Blight crossover tpb ... why would I want random pages from half a crossover, people? lol. Hopefully this Omni has all of it or that's a problem.

  • Rebirth, hands down.

  • Tynion/RamV is way better.

  • JLD Rebirth is generally perceived as better with more thought-out magic system, character dynamics, and story. For Zatanna, rebirth definitely better while New 52 kinda rough to her in terms of writing but on later half Zatanna finally got her shining moment as the competent leader

  • Had the same dilemma. Went with Rebirth then will just get the N52 compendiums early next year.

  • The rebirth one is much more loved I think. This sun voted on the best comics of all time. The rebirth JLD made it to like 20s ish I think. New 52 was not on the list kind of leading me to suspect it’s much less appreciated.

  • Rebirth era is way better. Of the New 52 stuff, only Lemire’s run is good but I also think it’s somewhat overrated. It’s good, but not great like a lot claim imo

I don’t like Milligan’s run at all and DeMatteis feels like he was tasked with just keeping the book going but it just limps along for a long time.

  • Constantine's the goat
