This happens all the time to me!
It starts off great—I’m excited to eat, and the food tastes amazing or, at the very least, good. Then in the middle of eating, I look down at my plate or get a waft of the food (which doesn’t smell off or anything) and I can’t fathom taking another bite or imagine eating anything else for the rest of my life! I’m so grossed out by the very idea of digesting anything but a gallon of water to flush it out of my system.
DAE get this way??
Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) is an anxiety disorder that might be from some kind of trauma history. An eating disorder therapist may be in order.
Hm… I’ll definitely take a look into it!
Me and a friend both have bad adhd and we call this the Ick. Just midway through the meal and nope suddenly its all wrong, texture is gross, dont wanna swallow it, smells weird, etc.
Its annoying af and i feel so bad when it happens with food someone made for me. Luckily most of the people around me know im like this tho so if they are serving plates they give me like half serving to see if it happens...
omg I have adhd but I never considered that it could be a contributor to this— definitely noted
Maybe not in the same exact way you describe, but yes. Some textures are kind of iffy to me (like eggs) so I only want to eat them for a few minutes
I’m like this about most meat, but especially chicken. The texture is 🤢
I like eggs, but I am extremely picky about how they are cooked, and can completely see how they could be off putting in any form.
I've been getting more disgusted with the taste of meat in the past few years. I used to love a good steak, but not so much anymore
This happens to me often. It's like I can feel it like a tickle in my teeth or throat and I know I won't be able to swallow. The food can taste great.
For me it's a texture issue. Some textures like bread, it gets smooshy and that's a nope. Cheese, like a slice of cheddar on a cracker, I can make it through maybe two and then it's a nope. Cheese is a big one, and I absolutely love cheese, but I can't really do slices of say swiss.
I like seared tuna, but after about two pieces and the red center is just too much.
I consider myself a very picky eater. I have issues lol, but I can't help it. There are rules. Mostly because I know my limits and also what I like. Like I will only eat Kraft macaroni and cheese original flavor out of the blue box. The microwave version is not the same. It has the right flavor and the right texture.
Yes! I do not like eating. It's a chore I must do regularly, and food has never really appealed to me.
I used to be like that also when I was much younger - around 8 or 9 yrs old...I never wanted to eat and I remember my mom making me sit all evening til bed time til I ate my food lol
My parents had a hard time getting me transitioned from liquid to solids as a baby. Apparently I'd guzzle down a bottle real fast, but I'd spit out solid food.
Bananas and eggs do this to me
Bananas are a huge frenemy of mine! Love the flavor, despise the texture
Oh my God yes dude. I'll be so excited to eat, I'll get like five bites in and then I look at the food I was just enjoying and it's no longer appetizing and my stomach rejects the thought of eating more. I wish I knew why my body betrays me like this.
Yesss it’s annoying when it's something you look forward to enjoying!
Yes, if it's something that only tastes nice for the first few bites, I get full SO quickly
🥴 yes. I get a really intrusive thought (I won't share it, in case it rubs off!) and I sometimes have to spit my current mouthful out. Very annoying! And then the whoel hing has to go in the bin.
YES OMG
There have been times that I was eating things that tasted good but when thinking about what it is, it kinda grossed me out, but I still ate it cause it was good. For example liver. Delicious but thinking about it being an organ grossed me out a bit. Also horse sashimi, very good but thinking about how it's raw horse meat it kinda grosses you out a bit
Not as extreme but it’s a feeling “if I eat this now I will throw up” it happens when I get too hot or too hungry because I think of food and forget to actually eat the food.
The too hot piece kicked in after heat stroke. It’s really weird how much it has affected me.
Omg yes! I used to love food but then I stopped snacking and eating so much sugar and I guess over time I got really picky. It could have something to do with the texture of the food, your hormones, or sometimes your mood can affect stuff like your appetite.
Or if my mouth is full of food and then I don’t like the feeling of my mouth being full so I’ll feel like I want to spit it out or choke it down with water. I also have lost my appetite entirely and I only eat when I feel like it and only small amounts at a time. But overall I’m healthy and full of energy!
All the time! I'll be thinking how good it's gonna taste, but when I put it in my mouth I just can't.
Yep! Sometimes mid-bite I realize there is no way I'm going to be able to swallow what's in my mouth and have to spit it out.
Yep this is me
I'm an addict so I usually keep eating, but occasionally my food tastes "off", especially is I'm starting a cold or have a migraine. Imagine eating oatmeal when you can smell BBQ sauce or gasoline.
Yeah if I eat something with a lot of meat then I start thinking too much about how I'm eating an animal and it freaks me out. Thing is I'm not vegetarian so I make sure not to eat too much meat
Yes but to be fair I found a hair in my food and couldn't finish and had to run to the bathroom to hurl. But yes this happens to me randomly (no hair involved)
Yes
You may have ARFID!
Oh god yes. I'll be halfway through a meal and start gagging and can't finish it. It's almost always "healthy" food. I feel so guilty about having to waste food :(
