I recently bought a new Moyu v11 to replace my old Gan 354. I'm loving it so far (great cube), but I noticed that its surface is a bit sticky (i presume with lube). Is this a UV coating thing, or did some of the lube make its way to the surface of the cube? I've tried cleaning it with isopropyl alcohol but that hasn't worked. For context I got it lubed by the shop I bought it from. Any help would be appreciated - thanks a lot!

  • Uhh I wouldn't recommend using isopropyl alcohol on the surface of the cube, just a damp cloth will do just fine. If this is your first time using a UV cube then just give it some time and just do lots of solves.

Agreed on the isopropyl thing - that stuff can actually mess with the plastic over time. The sticky feeling is probably just the UV coating being new, it usually breaks in after like a week or two of regular solving. If it's still bothering you after that then maybe hit up the shop and ask what lube they used

  • It is probably the coating. It will go away after time though. If it is lube, it will also go away after time.

  • UV coating honestly, it should wear away eventually

  • That’s normal and it’s almost certainly not lube.

The Weilong V11 has a UV-coated finish, and that coating can feel slightly tacky or “grippy,” especially when it’s new. Lube almost never makes the outside of the cube sticky, and if it did, isopropyl alcohol would have removed it pretty quickly. Since IPA didn’t change anything, that points strongly to the UV coating itself.

The good news is that the stickiness usually fades with use. After a few days to a couple weeks of solves, the surface tends to smooth out as the coating wears in. You can speed that up a bit just by solving a lot or wiping it down with a dry microfiber cloth.

So nothing’s wrong with the cube or the shop’s setup — it’s just a fresh UV finish, and it should feel more neutral over time.
