It's a complete mystery why he grew up to be so messed up.
Being forced to dress up like a girl is a common theme in most serial killers' lives. I know it happened to Henry Lee Lucas as well as Charles Manson. Probably a few others I can't think of off the top of my head.
Jeffrey Dahmer, by most accounts, had a fairly normal childhood. His mother was mentally ill and did attempt suicide by pills, but that type of situation isn't uncommon. A depressed pill addict for a mother was pretty common back in the day. Plenty of boys became men experiencing that baggage, and they never once injected hydrochloric acid into the brain of a Laotian boy. Probably.
I’ve read that another common type of childhood abuse found in serial killers is them as children getting Shamed for bed wetting and having their penis wrapped with a tight string or rubber band to prevent further bed wetting. Andrei Chikatilo’s mother did this too him
