It doesn’t seem that they remove them in the winter, all the other units in my complex still have them. I agree it’s weird but I believe the apt management wants us to leave them bc it came with the unit. I could do it myself I suppose
Grew up in an apartment with window units. The landlord never did that for us, we had to do it ourselves. Some people would leave them, others wouldn't. If heat is not included in your rent, I would take it out. You are letting a lot of heat out that window.
If it's accessible, you can get exterior covers for those window ac units to help keep the cold out. A lot of apartments don't let you remove the units, so that could help if thats the case.

You mean that thin accordion plastic on the sides DOESN'T insulate?!
I'd you don't pay for your own electricity/gas, then it's not your problem. Otherwise, it is your problem.
