So for Halloween I decided to be Nanami bc who doesn’t love that man?!? But despite putting everything together a lil last minute everything was coming together fairly well except for the hair… and I personally don’t like wearing anything on my head bc I don’t like it or just don’t like getting too hot. So as I’m trying to improve my cosplays this new year, and actually commit to building a costume from scratch, my question for this Reddit is…..

What’re other ways some of you cosplay using your natural hair?? And I know I can choose characters with black hair which I try to do but some characters I just can’t resist doing despite hair color!

(Also the prop was my official diy weapon lol very very last minute done but still fairly proud of it for what I had available in a timely manner hahaha)

  • knew exactly who you were! If you aren’t comfy wearing wigs then don’t, it’ll make the experience less enjoyable. Looks great with the black hair!

Ahh okok thank you so much! :))

  • There's nothing wrong with not looking EXACTLY the same (black hair instead of blond, etc).

But if you really wanna try to become even more similar to the char, it would be wigs or, unfortunately, bleaching you hair. (Please, for all that is good, go to a salon if it comes to that. 😂)

    Good luck, and nice cosplay!!!

I knowwww I’m just scared of bleaching my hair!! I already have issues with it natural and don’t want to cause more!! 😭🫣but thank you for the honest feedback still haha!!

Makes a lot of sense! I think wigs would be your only choice, then. You do get used to them after a while.

But as I said, it's up to you. Cosplay is about having fun, and everyone will know who you are. :)

  • Personally, I just suck it up and wear a wig. They're not comfortable, but they're worth it for me personally.

And then for more casual things like Halloween, it's nice to pick a character that doesn't need one.

  • You styled your hair perfectly for this, short wigs are hard to style and I think your natural hair is a better choice if you’re not super experienced with wigs.

I’ve done Hatsune Miku, Draculaura from Monster High, and Rumi from Kpop Demon Hunter cosplays for events where I’d be interacting with cognitively disabled individuals of varying ages, most of which tend to grab at people’s hair and clothes even if the person isn’t wearing a costume. I never wear a wig and instead arrange ribbons in my hair to give a similar effect. That way, if my hair gets pulled at I can just reattach the ribbons when I get a chance rather than have to pull out a mirror to fix a wig.

  • You can always do hair extensions instead of wigs, but those are usually more difficult and can be just as costly.

Ahhhh yk I didn’t even think or consider that! Thank you!!

  • i instantly recognized the character, and you look great with the dark hair, so I think the cosplay is totally okay without a wig or bleaching your hair! :)

  • Looks already great and recognizable without a wig!

There are ways to temporarily colour your hair. Like hair chalk, coloured hair wax or coloured hair spray. They might however not work too well on your dark hair depending on the product.

Yeaaa I considered hair spray but my hair is just too dark!!

Plus sometimes the color can transfer to other things.

  • If you're looking to improve your costuming, I say learning to style and wear wigs is important!

This year I learned a lot about styling wigs and what goes into it, it was an awesome, insightful experience and how I have just one more skill under my belt to be the best cosplayer I can be!!

  • You are 100% embodying the character with your natural hair.
