  • When I’ve bought jam I didn’t like I used it for savory things like glaze on meat or salad dressings.

I’ll also add stuff to it (like a jam I do like or fresh fruit or folded into whipped cream) to use it as bulk. Takes longer to use it up this way but it works.

Yes we do a pork tenderloin with a blackberry jam sauce that’s 👌🏼👌🏼

Bingo on the savory! Also - add a tablespoon or so to any wine/booze/fruit sauce for meat.

Bro honestly just mix it with some yogurt or ice cream rly might save it

    This is the correct answer.

Grilled cheese with tomato slice too

  • I'd just stress to be careful... What's worse than wasting $7 on jam you hate? Wasting even more money by using the jam in another dish (with more ingredients) that you also end up hating... Don't throw good money after bad.

You could try making a meat glaze but I would recommend trying the glaze before you dump it on the meat in case you hate it...

Pork chop with jam i don't like works really well

Add a touch of red wine or balsamic to it.

  • Awful in what way? Is it too sweet for you? Has it gone off somehow? Do you just not like blackberries?

Maybe try mixing it into a smoothie or yogurt? It might balance out the flavor a bit!

  • Awful like it’s gone bad? Or you just don’t like blackberry jam?

  • Can you eat it in a sandwich with cream cheese (Brazilian/Arabic cream cheese in particular if you can)? I find that eating jam with stuff makes you not taste the jam that much.

Also, is the jam off or do you just not like blackberry?

no, blackberry is all I buy. this just tastes really off.

That sounds like “throw it out and don’t risk food poisoning”

Or taking it back to the store and explaining that it tastes off and ask if it can be exchanged, if it’s not too old. Worse they say is no, and then you say ok and take the bad jam and go home.

In that case I would toss it, it may have gone bad. What’s worse, tossing a $7 jar of jam, or a $6000 hospital bill from food borne illness?

    You know you’re American when…

I mean, even if you're not, jam is a canned good. Botulism is a horrible way to die. No fancy jam could be worth it

No doubt. Those comments always make me sad.

Contact the person that made it, tell them in detail what's wrong and get your money back. Then toss it.

Also send pictures of barcode, date and batch number so manufacturer can check the batch.

Dude, you’re not helping us help you. “Off” as in gone off? Or “off” as in it’s not gone off but doesn’t taste like it usually does, maybe you bought a different brand or blackberries are seasonal so maybe they weren’t at their best when it was made?

Sounds like it belongs in the trash, then. Spoiled food is inedible. It's not wasting food if it's not actually food in the first place.

Off like it's gone bad? Or off like it's not what you expected? Is it a brand you usually buy? You really need to let us know if it's gone bad or it's just a weird flavor profile. Maybe explain what it tastes like.

If you bought it from a retail store, return it for product quality reasons.

If it's a pungent off-flavor like sulfur or lactic acid you may be best off just tossing it, if not for food safety reasons, then because you'll probably taste it coming through in whatever you try to use it for.

If it's just way too sweet/sour or something basic like that then you could make cocktail meatballs by mixing it with a bottle of premade "Chili Sauce" and braising small meatballs in it. Then you can add a touch of sugar or acid to balance the sauce as needed.

If it's a brand that you normally buy I'd suggest just throwing it away then. Not worth the risk.

Do not eat, throw it out. You taste buds don't lie.

If it seems spoiled and you bought it at a supermarket, you could return it saying that it seemed to have been opened and put back on the shelf where it became spoiled.

The market would let you get another jar of the same brand or of the same fruit by another company.

You should also contact the original jam company and tell them that it was bad. They will want to know the lot number too. In apologizing for the bad jam, they should send you a coupon or three to make up for your trouble.

I really like cream cheese and jam together - can you elaborate on Brazilian/Arabic types - how are they different compared to Neufchâtel cream cheese?

It's been a long time since I've had Neufchâtel, so I really don't remember what it's like. But Philadelphia cream cheese is a spreadable cheese product in the US that comes in a brick. I don't really know how to explain the flavor. I guess it's loosely similar to a Boursin? In usage, it's somewhat equivalent to Vache qui rit in that you spread it on stuff (say, a bagel or some toast), but the flavor is very different. Brazilian and Arabic cream cheese (requeijão in Portuguese, no idea what it's called in Arabic) is a completely different (processed) cheese product that comes in a cup and is not a soft solid but a goopy liquid, like melted cheese but cold. Again, I don't really know how to describe the flavor. I've gotten this cheese from both Brazilian stores and stores with Arabic products (and even Greek, I think?), and I can't tell if there's any difference between the Brazilian kind and the kind with Arabic lettering on the cup. I would bet that this kind of cream cheese was brought to Brazil by Middle Eastern immigrants, along with kibbeh and sfiha, but I'm just guessing. But where else have Middle Easterners immigrated to? Mexico. That's where tacos al pastor come from; it's basically Mexican shawarma. I think Mexican queso fundido is the same kind of cream cheese, but I haven't tried it. (EDIT: apparently it's not. What am I thinking of, then?)

This more liquidy cream cheese will mix with the jam on your sandwich, which is why I recommended it to OP, but it really looks like OP's jam is just spoiled or otherwise off and shouldn't be eaten at all. But when I was a kid in Brazil, I'd have jam and cream cheese sandwiches for breakfast pretty often, either on sweet Portuguese brioche (closest I can get here in the US are King's Hawaiian Rolls) or on Arabic bread (my dad's family is from Egypt).

Thank you for that extensive cream cheese talk! My folks used to send me to school with cream cheese and jam sandwiches and cc and salami and it was super embarrassing - HA, what did I know, it’s fantastic. That was SoCal, then we lived in Riyadh for awhile and my mom made a different kind then - must have been the other stuff, the Arabian kind.

    I’ll look for them, thanks!

  • Google ‘sunk cost fallacy’.

  • I'm going to echo the people asking "off how?"

If it's sour, try adding a bit of sugar (or non-sugar sweetener).

If it's bitter, try adding a (tiny) bit of salt.

If it's neither of those, or if either of those solutions doesn't fix the problem, toss it, because the chances are relatively good there's something actually wrong with it.

  • Look you can either throw away something worth seven dollars or you can make yourself the trash can. Cut your losses

  • turn it into barbecue sauce

That’s what I would do, and put it on pork belly.

  • You can try spreading some on toast and feeding the birds -- they might like it.

The obvious answer here is ... throw it away, or give it to a neighbor/family that might enjoy it.

I get a lot of things from my sister this way, she thinks she's an adventurous eater, she's not.

  • you could try jam cookies? or something that has another flavor/texture to it

  • It was interesting that this popped up today. This morning I washed four jars of homemade jam down the drain to reclaim the jars for something else. It was jam that I have had more than a year and didn't care for the flavor. I finally decided that I wasnt going to eat it and wanted the jars back for something else.

  • Exchange it at store for something else?

  • Return it, it might be from a bad batch.

  • Return it! I return anything I don’t like (within reason)…groceries are too expensive not to.

  • Tastes awful as in gone bad? Toss it.

Just don't taste appetizing? Mix with bbq sauce, turn into a vinegarette, use as glaze on meats, or roll into a pinecone for the birds.

  • Just toss it and let go of the $7

  • I use cheap marmalade or other jams and mix with a bit soy sauce and garlic, then brush part of mix on salmon and broil. Finish the salmon with a bit more of the mix.

  • Return it. $7 is too much to pay for jam that doesn't taste good.

  • Depending on where/when you bought it you can return it. Or call the manufacturer and say there’s something off about ti

  • Can you return it? I've returned items to the grocery store that were sold past their expiration dates. Trader Joe's has a policy that allows you to return anything you don't like. Maybe the store you purchased from will take it back.

    Trader Joe’s is the best.

  • I would dump out the jam, wash the jar & lid thoroughly and save them. Now you have a new jar for $7.

  • Return it, if t Hey don’t take it throw away. Sometimes you have to cut your loses.

  • Do you mean it tastes off? Because when in doubt, through it out.

If you mean you tried a new brand/flavor that you don't particularly like on toast, I would suggest try making a chutney style sauce for marinating chicken or pork.

  • What makes it gross? If it’s too tart or too sweet that seems like you could adjust - like add to a pie filling or something?

  • Return it and get tour money back.

  • I tossed a jar of strawberry preserves just yesterday. I tried it twice, then let if live rent free in the 'fridge and my head for the last 3-4 months. Tried it one last time yesterday, then nope.

  • Chutney: caramelise some onions, add chutney spices, vinegar, add bad jam. Taste and adjust accordingly

  • Life’s too short- toss it if it’s not good tasting

  • Use it for a pan sauce on pork or chicken

  • What specifically do you dislike about the flavor?

  • you can make a cake out of it

  • Do you think pairing it with chocolate would result in something you'd like? For example, a brownie cake where the jam is in between the layers

  • A spoonful of plum jam or blackberry jam can enhance the flavor of dark sauce.

Or you can heat the jam in a pot and season it to your liking: acid, sugar, vanilla flavor, whatever you like.

  • Give it away ... Stop complicating things lol

  • Describe the flavor. You may be able to adjust its flavor with a food processor.

  • If you have a slow cooker put meatballs, the jam and Diana's BBQ sauce in for a couple hours

  • You can melt it and use it for a glaze on something. Just Google blackberry glaze and see what ideas you can come up with to use it on..

  • Use it to sweeten smoothies. You shouldn't need much, and at that amount, it shouldn't give you too much taste, more like just sweetness like sugar would.

  • Could make a marinade, but you'd be adding the same flavor. Try to give it to anyone around and if no takers, leave it outside for a critter to eat. We have a rock in the front yard we put veggie trimmings on and if the deer don't eat it, there's a bunch of other night critters that take care of it

  • You could use it as a glaze for pork. Maybe smoke some ribs with it. There's also this burger recipe that uses jam from the Bob's Burgers Cookbook. The jam is guava in the recipe, but I bet yours would work, too.

  • I would make it into a blackberry jalapeno glaze for pork. You can slice fresh jalapeno thin or used sliced pickle( it also adds acid which helps) and cook the jam down with the jalapeños. Add a Little water to start bish it on the outside of a roast pork tenderloin then pour a little more over the slices. You can also use it on any pork like chops or ribs

  • Put it on top of a wheel of brie and wrap the whole thing in puff pastry. It'll probably be good with all that

  • soulcast it into something else

  • If you can't return it then use it for rib glaze. Mix in some mustard and brown sugar then brush it on. Broil it for a few minutes until there is a tangy glaze.

  • Make a vinaigrette or use on a pork roast.

  • Watch the Despicable Me movies, there is a very good use for bad tasting jam in the second one.

  • BlackBerry BBQ sauce!

  • Tasting is one of the best ways of testing the goodness of food. Force yourself to throw it out

  • Add it to a glaze for ham or other roasted chicken or pork, mix it into some tangy barbecue sauce a little at a time to add a touch of sweetness, use it with some chili sauce to make sweet and sour meatballs, use it on or with some baked brie, add to overnight oats, make brownies, cookies and other baked goods with it, add it to some lemonade and probably quite a few other uses I'm just not thinking of.

Even if you don't care for it, it can still be good as an ingredient in a lot of things, just maybe not the starting one.

  • Some companies have guarantee. If there is a phone number. Call them. You may get free stuff.

  • Make cocktail meatballs- jelly plus chili sauce or bbq sauce- add chili flakes, oregano. Throw all in crock pot. Yummy

  • Ask around your friends and family to see if anyone would like it. Post it to your local Buy Nothing group on Facebook.

  • I often cook with wine i definitely don't like. I've made fish and chips with a IPA beer batter. Don't know why but the more i don't like an ingredient the better the dish turns out.

  • My aunt gave me a home-made jam that I actually liked just fine, but I just don’t eat jam on the regular…if at all, really. I ended up using it to sweeten my thanksgiving cranberry relish, instead of sugar, which worked out swimmingly.

  • Jam does go bad. Make sure it isn't spoiled before you use it in something

  • Save it for use against Dark Helmet. He hates raspberry, but I bet any bad jam would do.

  • Please toss out. Your internal guidance system is telling you that your body does not want this.
I've had to do it too. Painful but best.

  • Do you like cocktails? I have used bits of jam to add some sweetness or flavor to a margarita. If it still tastes like blackberry, it could make a good gin drink or margarita! Look up "jam jar margaritas" for inspiration.

  • Make a vinaigrette with it, or marinade

  • Use it in a birria sauce of some kind. That's what I do with my leftover jams, jellies, applesauces, etc.

  • did you buy one that uses a sugar substitute?

If I have a jam I dont like I just eat it with peanut butter on toast.

  • Maybe make some of those grape jelly/cocktail sauce meatballs? I’d think the flavor wouldn’t stand out too much there

  • I keep hearing of a slow cooker meatball recipe that uses grape jelly. I'd give it a shot with blackberry jam.

  • Mix it 2:1:1 with jam:stone ground mustard:water to make a glaze for pan cooked pork chops

  • Use it in soups and stews for umame. Mix it in with pancake mix, or muffin mix.

  • Barbecue sauce, salad dressing

  • add more sugar

  • Put it in your oatmeal with some butter.

  • Thumbprint cookies !?

  • Get the 'miracle berry' that some claim turns lemons into a sweet treat https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synsepalum_dulcificum

Also it's okay to give it away or ultimately throw it out if you aren't going to eat it. Best not to if you can help it but at the end of the day its taking up space in your place

  • Give it to the birds.

  • Put a spoonful in a tray of simmering homemade gravy!
