so i took two pregnancy tests and on the box it says “6 days sooner than your missed period” and i didn’t read that part when i got the two tests. i am on birth control so i don’t get my period and i was wondering if the test being able to detect pregnancy before a missed period will make my tests invalid or anything since i don’t get my period at all i got two negatives from both tests i took but i was just wondering if anyone could answer my question hopefully i make sense

  • if it was negative for both, then ur probably not pregnant. if you're very concerned, see obgyn

  • The "6 days sooner than your missed period" just means that the test is sensitive enough to detect the lower levels of pregnancy hormones in your system that you'd have after conception, but before your missed period.

The fact that you don't get your period doesn't "invalidate the test," but if you're irregular, or you're not sure when your period would have been, then you might have taken the tests too long before your "missed period."

So for example if you you took the test 10 days before when your period would have been (if you weren't on birth control), then you couldn't really trust the results because if you were pregnant, your hormone levels could still be below the test's ability to detect. Does that make sense?

  • If youre on bc and dont get a period why are you testing at all? Accept the negatives and move on.

I got pregnant with my 12 year old while on a bc patch. Bc doesn't mean no baby, just less chance of baby 🙃

I get it. This is still stupid.

I never had my period when I was on the pill, and because I was also sexually active I took a pregnancy test every few months. Because I didn't have a period to miss, I wouldn't have the usual hint that I was "late".

My 16 year old goes to show that no birth control is 100% effective and even when there's no "mistake" made you can still get pregnant.

I had not one but two kids while on bc but this post is stupid. The tests were negative.

You asked why someone is testing if they're on the pill and not getting a period. I gave a reason why.

I agree she's most likely not pregnant.

You can still get pregnant while on birth control and without having periods.

I understand that but this is still ridiculous.

I understand that it’s a common sense issue for most of us but when you’re feeling anxious about a potential pregnancy (especially if it’s one you’re trying to avoid) then sometimes it’s difficult to be rational or think through the most likely explanation for something that confuses you about the process. Kindness in this situation doesn’t cost anything

  • No, it will not invalidate your tests. If you are very newly pregnant, you can get negative results even if you are pregnant (regardless of being on birth control or not) but the language on the test box is just saying that it’s a sensitive test, boasting early detection of the pregnancy hormone.

This is the best answer here, and correct. 💯 nothing for me to add.

  • Ok so I think the point of those ads is that the test can detect low levels of the pregnancy hormone well enough that its more reliable than the stereotypical missed period scare. If you dont have periods, that wouldnt be a metric for you, all you would likely really care about in this situation is the pregnancy hormone level, which the test didnt detect. I'd say take another one in a week or two to be extra sure.

  • Pregnancy tests are accurate 14 days after sex and definitive 21 days after. The “6 days before your missed period” is relative to the sensitivity of the test. If you’re taking your birth control correctly, it is extremely unlikely for you to be pregnant.

  • Your probably negative if your still feeling like you are pregnant wait a week take another test with the first pee of the day. I personally am paranoid about pregnancy. When I had my arm implant my periods were irregular I took so many tests just to double check.

  • When did you have sex?

i waited about 16-17 days since it happened it was on december 6th and then i took a test yesterday then another one today and they both came back negative

You can trust that negative then.

  • The wording on the box is misleading because it’s made for your average person to understand. It’s not 6 days before your period but rather 7-8 days Post ovulation. The box is assuming someone has a regular 28 day cycle and ovulates on day 14, and then has a typical luteal phase which a lot lot people do not have. So it’s really designed for people to test starting 8 days post ovulation but that would confuse the general population

  • A pregnancy test measure human growth hormone (hcg). The test is saying that it can test the amount of hcg one would expect 6 days before skipping their period. If your test is negative, it is not actively detecting hcg

  • The chemicals the test is looking for start out low when conception occurs and climb as time goes by. That message is just a test effectiveness warning, it might not give accurate results if taken immediately after conception.

  • A pregnancy tests for the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), which your body starts producing shortly after a fertilized egg implants in the uterus, with levels rapidly increasing in early pregnancy and appearing in both blood and urine.

This hormone is only present in pregnancy, so you neednt worry about your birth control altering the test results.

  • Basically, it's based on your cycle. Most birth control stops ovulation, and if it doesn't completely, that's why it's possible to get pregnant. It takes a few days after ovulation for your body to know conception has happened and that you are pregnant. If I remember correctly, your period is usually around 2 weeks after ovulation. So the test is basically saying it will work 6 days before when your period is supposed to be, or 8 days after ovulation. So, more or less just wait 2 weeks after you had sex to take the test. It takes time for everything to happen and have hormones show up that the test will detect. They all work later, but if you weren't on birth control and knew your cycle, the advertisements on the different pregnancy tests just tell you how much sooner you can take the test

  • It just means that it is sensitive enough to pick up a pregnancy roughly a week to two weeks after conception, which for women not on birth control happens approximately in the middle of their cycle. On birth control you still have a cycle happening, it's just suppressed enough to prevent pregnancy and sometimes the period too, which can make it tricky to track your cycle. The pregnancy test is still valid on birth control, just consider your timeline!

(I'm an anxious birth control girlie too haha)

You do not have a real cycle on most forms of birth control. Non-hormonal methods like the Copper IUD may allow for a cycle, but hormonal types do not.

Absolutely fair note, I was pretty handwavey bc the question was about whether pregnancy tests work, and the timeline for actual pregnancy is the same either way. As a disclaimer I am someone who does bio research but absolutely not a hormonal or women's health or even human physio (I do biophysics and CS lol, I like proteins in cells), so I totally might have some things wrong, but here is my best whack at a explanation with some citations:

I am on a hormonal IUD and still have a monthly cycle. The monthly cycle on a hormonal IUD is actually still pretty strong, relatively speaking. Hormonal IUDs work differently from pills though. I don't bleed on my cycle normally but I do get cramps and the absolute JOY of adult acne. For the pill, it generally takes over your hormone production much more completely. Here is a nice graph showing a normal cycle, an IUD cycle, and the big common OC (i.e. both prog and est and 3 weeks on 1 week off): https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11278889/#:~:text=Figure%201.&text=Visual%20representation%20of%20hormonal%20fluctuations,and%20dashed%20lines%20(progesterone). It's only prog and est here, no other hormones, I could only find those for regular cycles... AI has ruined Google.

I personally previously tried the progesterone only bc (the minipill), which also still has a very small monthly cycle of estrogen https://www.larabriden.com/how-does-birth-control-affect-hormones/ .

For the combo pill, it very largely replaces and suppresses your natural hormone production -- but not completely, just to the point that it is "minimal". I don't like imprecise words like "minimal" which is what most birth control articles will say, so I went and found the precise number if you're interested: "Estradiol levels in women receiving oral contraceptives were low, usually in the range of 20-30 pg./ml., similar to those found in the early follicular phase in ovulatory cycles, and significantly higher than levels found in postmenopausal women. Exogenous estrogen in the pill, together with this level of endogenous estradiol, should be sufficient to prevent any harmful effects associated with estrogen deficiency." which I got from this article: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/4645131/#:~:text=Each%20of%2097%20women%20in,effects%20associated%20with%20estrogen%20deficiency.

  • Girl, no. What you should be getting is an std test bc it sounds like you had unprotected sex and you’re trying to make sure you’re not pregnant.

If you’re on birth control, you’re probably not. There are subreddits for these types of things (posting pictures of pregnancy tests). I would just wait until the day of your normal period if you really want to make sure.

i’ve been with my partner for a while now so telling me to get an STD test is completely out of line. i’m asking about pregnancy test accuracy due to my situation and not that it’s any of your business but i regularly get STD tests and STI testing done. ur weird for that 😭 idk why you somehow got the message that i don’t know who im having sex with or that for some reason i need an STD test…

That’s good. Healthy thing to do. If you’re having unprotected sex as a teenager (you sound like a teenager), your main concern if you are on a hormonal birth control or IUD is an STI or STD. That’s not weird, it’s just a fact. Like I said, if you’re concerned about pregnancy it’s best to wait until the day of your period to take a test. Also, the doctor can’t tell you any sooner than the test so it’s just kind of a wait and see.

Hopefully Plan B is an option for you if this happens again in your area 🫡

i am 20 years old and i mentioned in my post already how i don’t get my period at all that’s why im making the post because the pregnancy test i got says “6 days before missed period” but i don’t get it at all (my period). i’m on depo provera i get it every 3 months and again i don’t really understand the whole STD testing mention that’s not my concern right now idk why you brought it up.. like i said i get tested regularly and im concerned over pregnancy test results and the accuracy of them..

  • it really depends what kind of birth control you’re on and when you had sex. you’re probably not pregnant, but it could also be too early to know. it really just depends.

for the safest experience with birth control, there should be 2 forms used: yours & a condom. also make sure to track your BC (if you’re on the pill, etc.) & when you have sex.

  • They use that as a marketing thing as women typically know when their period was. Typically they can start to be positive 10 days after fertilization? Having or not having a period has no effect on the test its just a timeline thing. Do you know when You may have ovulated?

i have no idea i don’t keep track of that unfortunately 😥

To clear things up a bit more. When an embryo implants a hormone called HCG is created and the level rises doubling every day or so. The pregnancy test tests for this hormone. They typically will pick up levels of 10-25 or greater which is about 10-14 days after fertilization

i think i’m okay then cause i waited 16 days to do the test then i did another one the day after that too and it came back negative

When do you think you would have conceived. Add 12 days to that date and then take a test on the day you come up with.

You don’t ovulate on Depo, which is the birth control OP is on.

Then she can't be pregnant. Obviously she thinks it has failed. No ovulation means no pregnancy. Effectiveness of depo is 94-99% effective reliant on if you get it at the correct intervals.

You asked when OP ovulated, which is why I said Depo prevents ovulation. There’s no indication OP received her injection late. Ovulation ceases in most forms of birth control. Right, she can’t be pregnant. Tests were negative.
