That doesn’t mean shit, AI models absolutely still existed and people were already using them to mass-produce shit books. GPT-2 had been out two years at that point and GPT-3 came out in 2020, it just wasn’t accessible to your grandma yet.
GPT-2 was literally open source, it cost basically nothing except a good computer. People were using it for all kinds of bullshit, including thousands of books just like this one. Yes, you’d probably have to prompt it once per page instead once per novel like modern ones. But that still saves the people writing slop hundreds of hours. Remember AI Dungeon? Subreddit Simulator? Did the average person really not know about AI prior to ChatGPT?
But why does the average person knowing about something have to do with this book? I don't think the person publishing a racist creepy pasta book is the "average" person
Istg everytime I hear of some brand new tech thing I learn it was actually already being used by people in the 1960s very commonly and I'm just living under a rock for not hearing about it beforehand.
You’re not it was around for a while but not to the extent it became
Technically speaking most things were invented 100s of years ago but were such primitive pathetic versions of themselves it’s hard to call them what they are
Yes, because technology doesn’t just pop into existence from nowhere. The military was using analogue targeting computers in the 1940s. Live two-way video calls were possible by 1960s. The first touchscreens were used by ATC in the early 1960s. Electric cars were ubiquitous at the start of the 20th century. Only thing is that the public didn’t know or care about them yet because they weren’t convenient for the average person. Tech has to be developed, refined, and make simpler for the average Joe to be able to grasp its utility. Same with AI. ChatGPT didn’t roll out of a factory somewhere fully-formed, it was the product of a decade of open experimentation, and of course many people in the know used GPT-2 for all kinds of mischief.

FAQ
What does this mean?
The amount of karma (points) on your comment and Reddit account has decreased by one.
Why did you do this?
There are several reasons I may deem a comment to be unworthy of positive or neutral karma. These include, but are not limited to:
Rudeness towards other Redditors,
Spreading incorrect information,
Sarcasm not correctly flagged with a /s.
Am I banned from the Reddit?
No - not yet. But you should refrain from making comments like this in the future. Otherwise I will be forced to issue an additional downvote, which may put your commenting and posting privileges in jeopardy.
I don't believe my comment deserved a downvote. Can you un-downvote it?
Sure, mistakes happen. But only in exceedingly rare circumstances will I undo a downvote. If you would like to issue an appeal, shoot me a private message explaining what I got wrong. I tend to respond to Reddit PMs within several minutes. Do note, however, that over 99.9% of downvote appeals are rejected, and yours is likely no exception.
How can I prevent this from happening in the future?
Accept the downvote and move on. But learn from this mistake: your behavior will not be tolerated on Reddit.com. I will continue to issue downvotes until you improve your conduct. Remember: Reddit is privilege, not a right.
AI was prolifically writing full books by 2018. Obviously they were bad, but by 2022 articles note that Amazon’s self publishing is chock full of AI generated books.
Genuinely makes me laugh that people like you mention his previous crimes or drug use as a way to deflect from the fact that he got executed in the street by a cop
Gotcha, instead of calling the ambulance and handling people with medical issues with compassion, cops are supposed to kneel on peoples neck for 10 minutes (while they are saying "i cant breathe") until they die.
I mean the science says you can still expell air while suffocating, so I don't know what your point is Edit: I see you downvoting me, but you won't respond because you know I'm right lol
What do you MEAN volume 1
And "creepypastas" implies there's several stories 😭
Cant wait for vol 2 ngl
Somewhere deep down I'd like to imagine this book wasn't made with AI
It's not made with AI. It was on Amazon in 2020, and ChatGPT was released in 2022.
Somewhere deep down I was right
That doesn’t mean shit, AI models absolutely still existed and people were already using them to mass-produce shit books. GPT-2 had been out two years at that point and GPT-3 came out in 2020, it just wasn’t accessible to your grandma yet.
True but the chance of it being even semi functional and cheap enough to bother using it at the time for a joke is low
GPT-2 was literally open source, it cost basically nothing except a good computer. People were using it for all kinds of bullshit, including thousands of books just like this one. Did the average person really not know about AI prior to ChatGPT?
The average person didn’t know and I say this as someone who was using things like ai dungeon and open ai story generator at the time
Ai dungeon could barely hold a logical sentence and it definetly wasn’t capable of a book
The average person didn’t know of these tools
But why does the average person knowing about something have to do with this book? I don't think the person publishing a racist creepy pasta book is the "average" person
True but every weird person isn’t weird for the same reason
The kind of weird that leads people to ai isn’t the same that causes someone to do this
The kind of person to do this atleast at the time would be much more likely to find fun in making something like this
Istg everytime I hear of some brand new tech thing I learn it was actually already being used by people in the 1960s very commonly and I'm just living under a rock for not hearing about it beforehand.

You're being downvoted for your typical Redditor response. Why don't you learn how to be respectful?

I used ai like twice before 2022 and neither of the results were good or book-length
Fascinating. Thanks for sharing your story, Zachy. Your experience is inspiring and definitely representative of the state of AI research.
how many books did you make using gpt-2.0?

Did he do that to answer this commenter's question, lol? Fits perfectly
Pack it up boys, any further shitposting pales in comparison to someone writing George Floyd creepypastas
Waitin for “MOD DELETE TS PLEASE” units
Black friends in question:

Are the downvotes in the room with us?
Yeah the guy I was responding to instantly downvoted me lol
That's true, you can indeed expel air. But you wouldn't have enough to scream for 10 minutes.
Charlie Kirk was choking and that hero gunman tired to save him!
Same vibes.
The gunman tried to open a new airway for Charlie.
He didn't overdose
No mo you're think of kirk, George was killed, kirk ods. Easy mistake to make
