I came up with 6 or 7. How many can you name?

  • Simple:

The most dangerous match, candidate for crime, troubled waters, murder a self portrait, rest in peace Mrs. Columbo, Columbo Goes to college, no time to die

    Not so simple:

The greenhouse jungle - lots of fake kidnapping stuff happens before Columbo shows up and the murder plan is in action, but the murder does not take place until after we see Columbo.

Columbo cries wolf - a fake murder staged for publicity takes place before we see Columbo, but the real murder happens way later in the episode after he's already shown up.

Prescription murder - the victim is attacked before we see Columbo, but doesn't die until after he has shown up.

Applied Criminology...when Justin and Cooper kill their professor

Ahhh yeah I just saw this one too.

Well done and I agree that it is your list of ten episodes. Can't think of any others. Of course, we are not taking episode previews into account.

It is worth noting that the reason we see the lieutenant first in 'Rest in Peace, Mrs. Columbo' is because it starts with a flash forward. Of course, there was no murder in 'No Time To Die.'

And about the comment in another post: the murder occurred first in 'A Case of Immunity.'

Ah, that's a good point about Rest in Peace!

Thank you and "martialgir" has added 'Make Me A Perfect Murder' to the list, so we have 11 episodes so far.

Ohh yeah, I can't believe I forgot about that one. It starts out with him singing some folk songs then driving very badly for a minute before he's rear ended by a police car.

Fun fact: the very opening scene of that episode where you see the roofs of a couple buildings and Columbo's car driving down the road is actually originally from A Stitch in Crime. Around 26:12.

Thanks for the factoid. Will look for that.

  • Make Me a Perfect Murder. The opening scene he is driving in his car singing and gets hit and ends up later in the episode with a neck brace.

Correct and forgot about that one, thank you. So that's at least 11 episodes by my count.

Fun fact: the very opening scene of that episode where you see the roofs of a couple houses and Columbo's car driving down the road is actually originally from A Stitch in Crime. Around 26:12. It's the only reused footage I've noticed in Columbo.

Hmm. Rewatching both scenes just now I noticed something interesting. The first time this footage appears is in A Stitch in Crime. It starts at the top of the hill where Dr. Mayfield lives and continues down just past the roof of a couple houses. In Make Me a Perfect Murder, the footage starts a little later, but continues on for longer down the street.

OK, I remember it now! That's when Columbo was on his way to the party that Mayfield didn't cancel.

Will give other possible reused footage some thought. It reminds me of the home used in 'Murder By The Book' and 'The Most Crucial Game.'

  • A Case of Immunity - He accidentally attends the security briefing before the murder.

I think in that one the murder already happened but nobody knows about it yet. That's part of the alibi. That the murderer talked to "the victim" in front of a whole room of cops.

This is one of my favourites and most rewatched, along with Old Fashiones Murder and Murder Under Glass. I think its the ASMR sounds in them all that make them extra relaxing as opposed to the actual plot themselves.

  • which ones?

The only one I remember (because it's great) is the one that opens with Columbo talking to a school director about the disappointing performance of his student and how it affects the morale of the other students.

It turns out to be an obedience school, and the student is Dog.

'Mind Over Mayhem,' but that exchange took place after the murder.

It is also one of my favorite episodes!

I love that episode! I don't think it's often ranked very highly though.

Absolutely! Great pacing, a smooth soundtrack, and our beloved lieutenant had very little to work with to solve that case. Some folks may have an issue with Neil's frame-up, but I do not. :-)

That episode apparently had a scene cut out, hence the credit to Darrell Zwerling as the Motel Manager. This also happened with Arlene Martel as Tanya Baker in 'Double Exposure.'

Maybe they have a problem with Robbie the Robot? Sometimes Columbo episodes have slightly pushed the limit of what was really technically possible at the time, but the robot took that to an extreme.

That's interesting about the cut scene and the motel manager because there is a scene with a motel manager (or maybe just employee?) that definitely is not Darrell Zwerling (who I recognize as Lewis Lacy from An Exercise in Fatality).

Correct. Mr. Whitehead was in the frame-up scene at the end. He was a Shangri-La Motel employee, but not the manager.

Sadly, Zwerling/Lacey did not make the cut in this one.

I would like to see others’ responses for a bit.

  • The episode I was watching earlier today, "Murder, A Self Portrait", opens with Colombo at a basset hound event with Dog. The murder (victim played by the ever-beautiful Fionnula Flanagan and the murderer played by a favorite of mine, Patrick Bauchau) occurs a little later in the story.

I love when Dog wins a ribbon and Columbo is asked so how many ribbons has he won? "Including this one, one!"

  • The newer one where he’s at his nephew’s wedding?

  • Friend In Deed has Columbo showing up after the first and before the second murder of the commissioners wife.

Yes! And there are several others that meet that criterion: A Stitch In Crime, Dagger Of The Mind, Publish Or Perish, Negative Reaction, etc.
