UNC’s Chris Lea voting them 17th, 8 spots ahead of their ranking, and thus single-handedly bumping them ahead of NC State for the 25th spot is amazing.
Just to understand the dynamics here, he's got to put a school affiliation but WRAL is the most watched channel in the states capital and covers all local (and not local as Wake and ECU are in other markers but get covered) schools. He's also from UNCG not UNC Chapel Hill. Not your classic bias.
Well, I can tell you that Jeff Rabjohns is definitely not biased for Oregon or Oregon State. In fact, I'm not sure he's ever been to the state if it wasn't for an IU game. Not sure how they messed that up.
How he has a vote is beyond me. Peegs is a trashy message board with recycled IU press releases passing as content. Then again. That typifies so much of the media and sports media especially.
538 did analysis a while back that showed preseason polls actually had more correlation with postseason success than end of the season polls or RPI (this was a few years back when RPI was still used often).
I think he mentioned in his article that he doesn't think that Boozer will have the same effect as Flagg did, but did it in a way that was more saying Flagg was ridiculous and Boozer will still be a great player.
This is a series I've been doing on /r/CollegeBasketball for 7 years. The post shows all AP Poll voter ballots in a single image. Additionally it sorts each AP voter by similarity to the group. Notably, this is not a measure of how "good" a voter is, just how consistent they are with the group. Especially preseason, having a diversity of opinions and ranking styles is advantageous to having a true consensus poll. Polls tend to coalesce towards each other as the season goes on.
These will now be viewable at https://bakonyalgo.com/ap. Once we get to week 2, may add some other visualization there as well, but the ballot image is there now for Men's Basketball
The Poll has 61 voters this year, with the following breakdown:
4+ Years
Brian Holland, Bruce Pascoe, Chris Murray, Dave Borges, Dave Preston, Dick Vitale, Donna Ditota, Geoff Grammer, Jon Rothstein, Jon Wilner, Kevin McNamara, Mark Berman, Scott Richey, Seth Davis, Stephen Means, Zach Klein, Bob Ballou, David Jablonski, Jeff Borzello, Justin Jackson, Brenna Greene, Dylan Sinn, Mark Zeigler, Pat Rooney, Kevin Sjuts, Mia O'Brien
Other Returners
Andrew Quinn, Brice Cherry, Kate Rogerson, Parth Upadhyaya, Shane Mettlen, Jeff Neiburg, Jeff Rabjohns, C.J. Moore, Johnny Congdon, Kyle Franko, Michael McCleary, Mick Shaffer, Peter Rauterkus, Randy Heitz, Scott Hamilton, Tony Paul, Trevor Hass, Victor Flores, Toyloy Brown III, Anthony Kristensen
Returning after 2 years off
Abby Schnable, Percy Allen
First Year
Eric Crawford, Jackson Payne, Chris Nee, Matt Young, Sam Rothman, Joe Cook, Brenden Martin, John Johnson, John Wustrow, Connor Earegood, Chris Lea, Andy Greder, Owen Siebring
Leaving the Poll
Bob Holt, Marcus Fuller, Rick Bozich, Bret Bloomquist, Steve Greenberg, Jay Tust, Darnell Dickson, Luca Evans, Adam Lichtenstein, Benjamin Rosenberg, Eric Newman, Ian Kress, Louis Fernandez Jr., Mike Hlas, Reece Van Haaften, Stephen Thompson, Mitchell Northam
Eric Crawford was the most consistent voters in the preseason poll. Jackson Payne, Dick Vitale, Geoff Grammer, and Brenna Greene were not far behind.
Jon Wilner was the biggest outlier. He was followed by Dave Borges, Owen Siebring, Andy Greder, and Dave Jablonski.
Eric Crawford is replacing Rick Bozich as WDRB's representative in the poll, I actually trust his opinions over Bozich's (Rick REALLY loved Kenny Payne)
When there’s only 1 person doing it, it’s clearly not accurate. Purdue and Houston should both be top 3 based off last year performance, returning players, and incoming class.
This fool just watched the preseason top 3 teams in football get unranked by week 6 and wants to be mad about someone having the fucking gall to rank us 5th
That's interesting! I usually pull these from a pretty cursory scan of their Twitter so take them with a bit of a grain of salt. Entirely possible he covers both.
Yeah that’s a mistake, thanks for letting me know. It’s supposed to be Indiana but for some reason he and only he got messed up. I’ll fix it in the week 2 image. I did successfully update the affiliation to Peegs!
Just a q for my knowledge, why is Dickie V considered to be affiliated with Duke? He didn’t go to school or coach there, I guess it’s just happened over time?
How’d the preseason football polls turn out? These are just “educated” guesses at this point and I’m with those that would hold off ranking teams before the season begins. Let them play a few games first.
It isn't about accuracy, because we all know how unpredictable college football can be. It is about content and engagement. So much garbage is put out, because we have multiple 24/7 sports networks.
My favorite game to play is to see how biased each reporter is toward their affiliated team
6th?!
Maybe going off KenPom?
He’d have BYU lower if that was the case probably
Another look at the rankings I see Baylor received exactly 1 vote from guess who
I believe. By the end of the season the 17 will seem weird, not the 6

Just wait until they vote themselves into March Madness
2 other voters put UNC at 17th.
How drunk was Jon Wilner when he made his ballot. Putting State at 14 despite them having a tiny starting front court?
Have you made a comment this year that doesn’t involve calling our front court short lol
If only there was a way for you to look at my comments and find the answer to that question yourself.
See, this is why your parents just gave up and bought you the velcro shoes your whole life.
Connor not putting us in top 25 makes this even better
He knows what them boys in East Lansing thrive on
Well, I can tell you that Jeff Rabjohns is definitely not biased for Oregon or Oregon State. In fact, I'm not sure he's ever been to the state if it wasn't for an IU game. Not sure how they messed that up.

Louisville affiliate knew what he was doing ranking us right behind UK lol
WTF Eric
Yeah it’s really fun… ohh wait
Eric Crawford beating a local hater as usual.
Our highest voter is from New Mexico, presumably because we got Donovan Dent from UNM.
Isn’t Connor Earegood a UM grad?
Nobody hates Iowa Men's Basketball more than Iowa Men's Basketball fans.
It's also interesting to see bias by ranking your teams more harshly. Maybe more up to date and honest by what you're tracking?
LSU has 2 reporters on here and no votes, I’m proud they’re being… objective.
The JMU dude can be particularly bad about it, he’s had some wild ass ballots
David Jablonski adding a sneaky VCU at 25 (along with one other) despite being for Dayton makes me smile a little, that's incredible.
I'm not convinced it's appropriate just yet, but I love to see it anyway.
Jon Wilner.
Doesn’t he always have AWFUL Cfb polls too lmao. If I recognize any of these names, it’s not a good thing LOL
Some Jon Wilner highlights:
#1 UConn
#3 Texas Tech
#5 Purdue
#8 Illinois
#14 NC St
#15 Florida
#25 Arizona
Unranked: Tennesee
Granted, it's preseason, so who cares. But I'd be real curious if there's any actual method to his madness.
His method is he hates Arizona. Also he knows nothing about the sport he claims to cover
Seems alright to me 👍
I approve
He is, and forever will remain, one of the all time college basketball nitwits.
He’s always been a moron.
hey man let him cook!
I don’t know who he is. But I like him!
he's pretty great I hear
I actually respect it, he’s got his ideas and he’s sticking to it, not being swayed by the groupthink. Preseason polls are a crapshoot anyway
Except he'll keep his ideas late late into the season despite all the evidence contrary.
Except he’s actually trash year-in, year-out. His rankings are based on literally nothing, even at the end of the season.
I agree that preseason polls are as useful as a shit flavored lollipop, but this is the internet, and he dissed my team.
What are his ideas exactly?
538 did analysis a while back that showed preseason polls actually had more correlation with postseason success than end of the season polls or RPI (this was a few years back when RPI was still used often).
Idk I think he might be onto something
We snuck on a ballot lmao
Shoutout to Andy
We are so back!
CJ Moore knows ball
My first thought was, how’d we lose and still move up on some ballots??
Then I realized it was basketball
Two words: quality losses
Always rated Owen Siebring
Unbiased opinion his ratings are the worst without a doubt.
Dave Borges just hates us lmao
Yeah, sheesh.
I looked at it and my first reaction was “what he say fuck me for”
Dave Borges is an all-time talk downer. He sucks lol
Although he has at 3 this year, he usually ranks us pretty low in the preseason in previous years
I think he mentioned in his article that he doesn't think that Boozer will have the same effect as Flagg did, but did it in a way that was more saying Flagg was ridiculous and Boozer will still be a great player.
I didn't realize Jackson Payne was an AP voter, he's a chill guy.
Seeing his name next to Dick Vitale is kind of cool.
🙏🏻
New this season, excited for him
Chris Lea wtaf
Screw you David Jablonski

New enemy unlocked: Dave Borges. Alabama at 11 and Auburn unranked
Dave just knows ball IDK what to tell you...
One guy has Kansas State at 13... my man!!
Connor is a big Jerome Tang guy
Okay, Chris Lea. Okay.
Does Chris Lea have any relation to Clark Lea?
Edit. No relation but looks like he was a former professional wrestler and appeared on Who Wants to be a Millionaire.
Me looking for someone that mistakenly entered ASU into their ballot instead of UA
Anthony Kristensen knows ball, and it’s definitely not because he has us highest of the lot
What is Chris Lea smoking? The only person to have us 5th. And only 1 of 3 people to not have us top 3.
My favorite parts of these threads is where the difference between 3rd and 5th in a preseason is clearly an illicit substance.
When there’s only 1 person doing it, it’s clearly not accurate. Purdue and Houston should both be top 3 based off last year performance, returning players, and incoming class.
He also has Tech at 25 which is wacko
lmao da fuck? No games have been played yet, how would you know its accuracy?
This fool just watched the preseason top 3 teams in football get unranked by week 6 and wants to be mad about someone having the fucking gall to rank us 5th
He has Texas tech at 25 as well.
When you're that high who gives a damn
I’m really digging C.J. Moore
I’d like to point out Zach Klein is listed as affiliated with GT here but with UGA in the football one
That's interesting! I usually pull these from a pretty cursory scan of their Twitter so take them with a bit of a grain of salt. Entirely possible he covers both.
Jon Wilner knows ball
I like that Jon Wilner guy
He's consistently bad every year.
Jon Wilner needs his voting privileges revoked
I have always known Owen Siebring is full of shit.
Wow it is really easy to find that Michigan Yellow haha
The facts that some idiots didn’t even have Tennessee not in the top 25 is insane
Geoff Grammer knows ball (I am incredibly unbiased)
If you are the one person to have BYU outside of the top 15, you should lose your vote. There is genuinely no basis or justification for that
Disregarding all these except for Jon Rothstein. He has done nothing but think about college basketball the entire off season
Andy Greder knows ball
Owen siebring knows ball
Andy Greder is great I’ve always said this
The one I agree with most, at least Top 10 wise is Parth for Memphis there.
Andy Greder giving IU fans hope with that #25 ranking
Nice to see Lasalle on a top-25 ballot.
No, not on that side.
Did Connor Earegood you good bro? Did you mix up Kansas and Kansas State?
Is Jeff Rabjohns being affiliated with Oregon/Oregon State a mistake? He’s still running peegs as far as I’m aware.
Yeah that’s a mistake, thanks for letting me know. It’s supposed to be Indiana but for some reason he and only he got messed up. I’ll fix it in the week 2 image. I did successfully update the affiliation to Peegs!
No problem, and great work on this!
Ofc Randy Heitz had to sneak in his beloved gooners in at 25th on his poll.
Is this real life?
Pop isaacs is going to all conference this year.
Wilner is a CLOWNx10
4 votes
So Creighton doesn’t have an AP voter but Virginia Tech does? That makes a ton of sense. Let’s compare the last 10 years of those programs.
Remember, children......UK has no one.
a lot of these mfs are idiots
I guess Dave Borges believes in us
Just a q for my knowledge, why is Dickie V considered to be affiliated with Duke? He didn’t go to school or coach there, I guess it’s just happened over time?
He has multiple grandchildren who have played tennis at Duke. I'm guessing that's it.
I see three people who should lose their vote
They let the town sports guy, student papers, etc vote?!? No one order this thing is always so crazy out of touch.
I have always said Andy Greder is the smartest and most handsome voter, many people are saying this.
Don’t know Owen Siebring to well, but I gotta say he seems like a swell person to me.
Wow, how do they get it right every year
I don’t even have something to complain about because it’s not like my team should be on anyone’s ballot
guy at the bottom just wanted to be different and put UF at 15 lmao
Dick Vitale not ranking duke one is crazy to me
Thought this was football for a moment, was very confused
Brian Holland and Jon Wilner are the only 2 who know ball. The rest need to work on improving.
I love Purdue but I cannot fault these reporters, strong start but fall off come March. That’s my team babyyyy
Are you reading that as how they think the teams will be ranked throughout the season?
Ah yeah but I see now, don’t know what I was thinking. But I think my comment stands nonetheless
I saw it the same way, that’s kind of why I asked 😂
2 Big Ten guys didn't put Arkansas in the top 25 at all. Very strange.
I don't have any problem believing that's a coincidence
I’d like to shoutout my guys Brian Holland and Jon Wilner
To the people who put us in their top 25, thank you
I didn’t realize this was CBB instead of CFB and was VERY confused for a few
Jon Wilner and Brian Holland
Always knew they were the smartest minds in college basketball media
Dylan Sinn sounds like a pornstar, but he knows ball
Shoutout to the Baylor reporter who ranked Baylor at 25
Percy Allen knows ball
I like CJ Moore, I really dislike Johnny Cogden
How many Duke affiliations do they need? Lol
Ole Miss lol
Gonna be real embarrassing for Mick Shaffer when UConn blows out Kansas at Allen Fieldhouse
Flair up
How’d the preseason football polls turn out? These are just “educated” guesses at this point and I’m with those that would hold off ranking teams before the season begins. Let them play a few games first.

Of course the UConn and Duke voters put uk the lowest among the rest of the voters - go figure
