According to the law, ballots can be counted as long as they're postmarked by Election Day. In recent years, voters in Ohio have experienced long delays when ordering ballots by mail. Mail delivery becomes very unreliable around Election Day. With the passage of this law, voters will need to visit the Board of Elections where they can vote in person to ensure their ballot is counted. If Gov. DeWine didn't like the law, he didn't have to sign it.

  • If voting didn’t matter, Republicans wouldn’t try so hard to stop it.

What do you mean? They believe in the right to vote... for them! /S

  • And give that fuck-wit DeJoy to cause delays to the mail. Joe fucked up by not dumping him.

  • We really hate overseas armed service members in Ohio.

More than that, there are disabled folks and people without transportation or the ability to reach transportation that are impacted by this.

In ohio you can apply for a mail in vote on for that next election as soon as the first of the year and get it in the mail over a month in advanced of the election.

A disabled person has a mailbox outside of their address just the same as everyone else. What are you even talking about?

Anecdotal experience is not always relevant to folks who are not you. It would probably be a good thing for you to imagine other experiences besides your complexly and consider how things like this could impact those with lives different than yours!

So far, none of the Republicans have shown how there's a problem in allowing ballots to be counted if they're postmarked on or before Election Day.

So your ficticous disabled person can get their mail out of the mailbox but cant put a letter back in?

This is a quite a disability.

"With his signature, the number of states accepting mailed ballots received after Election Day as long as the ballots are postmarked on or before that date has fallen to 14, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. Many states, including Ohio, continue to make exceptions for late-arriving ballots for certain eligible voters, such as overseas residents and U.S. service members and their families."

Reddit loves to critize bills and articles that they dont read. The streak continues

    it's still a shitty bill.

You are correct that armed service members are exempt from this restriction.

"Current law specifies that uniformed services and overseas absent voter’s ballots that arrive late by mail are not required to be postmarked and may contain a late or illegible postmark, as long as the voter marked the ballot and signed the envelope by the close of the polls."

It's still a bullshit law that harms Ohio voters.

Im sure youre opinion would be much different if a slew of mail in votes came in after an election and swung it in a way you dont agree with. You would rightfully assume it was corruption.

This attempts to stop that issue.

I would not assume it was corruption; I’d assume it’s issues caused by an underfunded postal system

As long as they're postmarked before or on Election Day, they're legal votes. Every ballot has an ID number and a bar code. It's assigned to a pre-screened, registered voter.

Why would it change? The will of the voters matters. I don't have to agree with everything, but America is founded on principles of representation that I choose to value.

Its also founded in on meeting deadlines. We dont accept in person votes after voting has ended, why would mail in votes be different.

Representation matters. Not everyone is abled-bodied and should be given opportunities to have their vote count in the capacity available to them.

Furthermore, in-person voting is costly. We should be encouraged to votes to be performed mail-in anyways.

You can have an absentee vote in your home in September dude, what are you even talking about?

How does this law benefit Ohioans? In what way does it benefit voters from expressing their liberty? What problem is this law trying to solve? Those are my fundamental questions. Ultimately, I don’t believe this law is necessary.

You probably also dont believe that people should have to show ID to vote either

If you're in line when the poles close, you are legally allowed to vote. Same should be allowed for mail-in ballots, if postmarked before the election then it should be counted.

That's not rightfully assuming corruption. There is no issue other than ignorance. You anti-democratic scum will defend anything

How many times did you blame Russia for 2016?

  • This guy makes his own laws changes what we vote for, makes rediculous emergency bans not thinking of repercussions.

    Why?

Because he isn't running again. What does he care. There needs to be a way to stop Kamakazi politicians like this. Thank God he doesnt have the button.

  • Republicans?

Making it...harder to vote? No way!

Yeah, we should make it like Dem states. Everyone gets a vote... or two.

Show me any evidence that isn't from the pillow guy. Or has that kraken been slain?

Nothing in this article was about people voting multiple times or faking votes. If this is your best evidence of voter fraud then that's good news

We go from there's nothing there to this doesn't count.

What? We went from "democrats fake votes all the time! Sometimes people cast 2 or more votes!"

To "ok show me proof that happens"

To you submitting an article that has nothing to do with people casting multiple or fake votes.

To them people calling you out on that and that somehow is moving the goalposts?

Damn bro you got us good.

Okay, that's something, but this is not the widespread voting fraud that is claimed by every MAGAT, this is a clerical error made by a volunteer who missed a signature, this is not Juan taking Granny Smith's vote to a drop box. The votes cast were verified in recounts by hand three times and no double voting or dead people voting was caught any time

315,000 is not a small clerical error.

It was one signature that covered 315,000 votes, not 315,000 individual sign offs

    I don't think that makes a difference.

If you work in any regulated work environment, you realize quick that missing signatures on documents are the most common error and happen daily everywhere

Hope it doesn't happen when my brakes are up for repair or when you go in for heart surgery.

This isn't evidence of voter fraud, just evidence of procedure not being followed.

They ignored inquires. I'm sorry but not following procedures in an election is not small potatoes.

It's not, but it's not fraud.

Who are you to assume intent? If the county had to be pressured to admit something that sounds a bit fishy to me.

I'm not the one assuming intent here.

It's true, I voted six times last election. We shall become communism inshallah.

6? Those are rookie numbers. Get to the double digits then we'll talk

    Global Intifada, my bro!!

the dumbest comment in the thread

It's called a joke... chill dude

Aren’t jokes supposed to be funny?

90% of the people find it funny, the 10% triggered folk certainly do not...

Yet somehow, you have more downvotes on your comment than upvotes. Now THAT is funny.

    Vote early and often!

(But seriously voter fraud is a conspiracy theory the Republicans started spreading during the Obama era to justify increasingly stringent voter restrictions, starting with voter id).

I believe the only people in the last however many years to have voted multiple times and were caught were Republicans. So stop projecting your disappointment in your own party on democracts. Dems have their own stupidity to contend with just like Republicans.

G Newsome was adamantly opposed to ICE stationed outside of polling stations saying it was a blatant attempt at intimidating illegal residents.

I'd be nervous about a dozen FBI officers around my voting booth despite not having a bomb up my ass too.

Overly-armed authorities with absolute immunity spook people. Go figure?

Do you not get that he was admitting illegal immigrants were. voting in California elections?

    Uh...how so?

ICE is detaining citizens and non-citizens both.

Because armed and masked men outside of polling stations surely won't have any effect on voter turnout. Especially when said men aren't exactly known for their discretion when it comes to harassing and illegally detaining people of color, asking for proof of citizenship only after the fact.

  • Deadlines are a play right out of the fascist handbook!

Lol yeah elections should be fluid and just happening forever

  • Too be fair can't you vote by mail months before election day?

You can try. In Ohio, the Republicans keep narrowing that window of time available. Personally, I choose to vote early, in person at the BOE or on election day at my precinct. Anyone who still wishes to vote by mails needs to assume a lot of risks and delays. Do your homework well in advance, check to make sure your registration info hasn't been accidentally purged, verify everything is correct and up to date. Do all of that several months before the election. Next you have to try to get your ballot application sent in as early as possible. It may take weeks for them to send it, then several more weeks to receive the ballot. Good luck.

Next I'd like to see the BOE track your ballot and verify that it's been officially counted at the end.

  • This aint gonna save you

  • Be responsible, get your votes out early enough that they get counted by election day come what may. It's not like you don't know when an election is coming.

  • You make a lot of claims about getting ballots and delivery of ballots. My personal experience in Cleveland is the opposite with the county website that let's you track your ballot. Curious where you get your information.

Last time I tried to vote by mail, about 4 years ago, the BOE showed it being taken to the post office. It didn't arrive at my home for 3 weeks, so tracing it didn't help. I figured if I filled it out and sent it by return mail the same day, it might take another 2 or 3 weeks, too late for Election Day, so I voted in person at the BOE. There's no harm in counting votes that were legally postmarked on Election Day. Don't vote by mail, vote in person and vote early, if possible.

That anectdotal. You made general claims about ballot delivery and receipt. do you have any sources. I vote by mail regularly. The few times I thought receiving the ballot took a while, I checked and realized they only send them out at a specific date.

    That anecdotal

Exactly. So where is the data? And if the USPS is so unreliable, perhaps we should eliminate all mail-in ballots. It would be a shame for ballots to get lost and not counted. If they are not getting lost but just delayed, what is a reasonable time frame for delivery?

that anecdotal in my personal experience

  • Good, get your shit together if it’s that important to you. Voting isn’t hard, there’s no need for all this extra bullshit around it unless you’re trying to manipulate the outcome.

We've gone from election day to election week to election month to election season.

Vote on election day. If you need a mail-in its incumbent on you to explain in detail why you need it and how there's no way you can get out and vote at a poll.
