The CircleOfTrust experiment has come to an end, as of April 6, at 12:00 EST.

It's time to say goodbye to our old circles, remember the good times we had and the communities that kept us going, from r/CircularSwarm to r/CircleOfPurity.

Now that Circle of Trust has officially closed its doors, let's talk about it! Did you think it was good? Or would you've preferred something more akin to r/Place? What's the best (or worst) experience you had with r/CoT? And what faction were you part of? Are you completely out of the loop and have no idea what's going on? Now that it's done, sit back, relax and let's talk r/CircleOfTrust!

  • Played on both sides. I think it was way too easy to lose your circle. It probably also would have helped if there was some incentive to being in a large circle. But then again, maybe the point was "don't trust a ton of random strangers."

Regardless, it was pretty fun. The first time I've actually talked to people on here, aside from in comments. My homework misses me, though.

Lol, my homework assignments have not seen me in days

    [deleted]

    Good lord that is brilliant.

Yeah, getting people talking seemed to be the point and it definitely succeeded in that regard.

For instance, even though our "Ban r/t_d" circle got passed up by the botters on the leaderboard in the final stretch, we still now have a huge group chat of trusted people aligned toward that goal that we can continue to use in the future, and we're all very proud and motivated by the fact that we made it through to the end with no betrayals. That shared element of trust between us for a common goal was huge and still is even though the game is over.

And now that we don't have to worry about a key leaking, we can even go back through the comments section and add everyone that we couldn't quite trust because of a more neutral post history to our group chat and subreddit... We'll probably be several hundred strong after we do that!

I'd say it definitely succeeded in forming new communities with higher levels of trust than we're used to on Reddit.

One more thought: I do wish that they would have given more than 1 hour's notice when they were going to end it, it would have been more interesting to do 24 hours that way we could have seen all the dirty tricks people had up their sleeves with a day's notice. From my perspective on the west coast, I just kinda woke up and it was over... pretty anticlimactic.

Also I feel they could have had a more interesting endgame. Some way of combining circles or something perhaps?

And it sorta sucks that a single person with an army of alt accounts got first place. Reddit in a nutshell. I think the fact that centuryclub placed so highly says a lot. This was a game for the powerbrokers of reddit. Groups that had pre-ogranized private communities prior to April 1 and networks of alt accounts had a massive advantage.

I agree with the other commenter about the homework... RIP my GPA :/

Yeah. Originally, the key leak was supposed to be close to the end of the game, but they never bothered telling us when that was, and we were a little worried about them not telling us and just ending it, so we leaked it on the day we thought it would end.

It's super shitty about the person with the alt army that won, however, I think you're wrong thinking that the game was only for people with previously close communities. There have been a ton of circles to reach 100+, and even more to reach 50+. I think it's a pretty amazing feat to be able to trust that many internet strangers. And even a ton of century club circles got taken down, so yes, they had an advantage, but we still managed to get them. I feel like the circles like that were the counter to the Swarm.

Oh I know it was possible, I built one that made it over 100 and was never betrayed. But it was a massive task; people with preexisting communities had a lot of helpful infrastructure in place already which probably helped massively. That's why I say they had an advantage, not necessarily that the game was exclusively for them.

  • I'm just glad my circle survived until the end! 😁

  • Well, I survived (31/18) and got guilded three times for my Inglourious Betrayers video so I got that going for me.

  • :'(

    my naem is Mel
    and here i pass
    this circle game
    it could not last

    i'm sad to quit
    all of this fun
    just for a bit
    we had good run :)

    was fun to see u
    it was fun to play
    but game is over
    now i go away

    And away she buzzed off,

    many a circle in debt.

No one knows you're a mosquito,

    on the internet.

You made me smile every time I read your poems.

  • I was a member of the Made in Abyss circle. I cannot express how proud I am of our members. I enjoyed the event a lot as well, though it may have got me addicted to my phone badly.

My favorite part though was our dirty dealings. We took out various competitors to get to number 1, where we were for a brief period of time, referring to ourselves as the Mafiabyss.

Interestingly though, this event was surprisingly good for making new friends. When we got to number two the first time, a Swarm admin got the code to our Discord. Only a few spies entered, but the Swarm admin had just recently started watching the show, and so hung around. Best of all, after we reached number one, we gave this admin the code, and to my mild surprise, this member of the Swarm ended up not betraying us, or giving our code to their membership!

While it was cutthroat in execution, it was definitely an event I’m glad I didn’t miss.

    shh

we're trying to keep stuff secret until Terps finishes the video

I mean, uh, I'm also super proud of how much our community came together for this april fool's day event, and in particular how not a single person leaked the code to get in even after we hit 100 people!

I leaked the key... to u/jake_j_jung. But since he is Made in Abyss' official translator, I had no fear of him leaking the key.

    Traitor! Scoundrel! :)

I wonder if he ever joined the circle...

Yes, he did. After I had given him the key, our count went up.

  • I just arrived in the last our, so nothing to lose. I made an easy to guess key, which 20 people got right and the betrayal arrived in the very end.

It was interesting, I just sit back, watching people arrive AND some gave me their keys spontaneously after guessing mine (most of those circles got betrayed too).

The true highlight here is that I just learned what r/place was and I wished to be in 2017, not 2018.

  • They really needed a confirm button on betray.

  • I think one thing a lot of people missed was the point of the others in your circle having the key. They could also share it and grow your circle - but no-one utilized that and it became boring.

We utilized that in the ban r/t_d circle actually and it was very effective. It was the only way to vet peoples' post histories fast enough, I couldn't do it alone. I was worried that the people helping out wouldn't be as thorough as I was and accidentally let in a t_d sockpuppet, but thankfully everyone did a great job and that never happened and we ended the game unbetrayed with size over 💯 :)

  • It was a lot of fun!!! I loved it.

I met a ton of nice people overall. The sweetest part was when users who trusted me would refer other circles to me so I could join theirs.

I agree it should have been harder to lose your circle. The discord groups were definitely the worst part but they were a minority.

  • We've shown the strength, friendship, and unity of our community!
It's miraculous what a great manga and anime alongside great moderators and lovely people can do!
    It was a pleasure!

    Yours sincerely,
    Alpatron99, from r/MadeInAbyss

And to those interested in how Made in Abyss managed to reach the top, there should be an exposé post coming soon... ;)

  • Except it hasn't. You can still join and betray. The top circle got betrayed after 12.

  • i didnt tell anyone my key, because i had no fucking idea what the hell this was or what to do.

  • why did it end?? should have kept it going!!

  • /r/place was the first reddit april fools event i participated in, and while i was not in any community, i still helped out with unfinished projects and just overall contributed. It was sad when it got shut down. But then, /r/circleoftrust was a good idea on paper, but it got boring fast, and the alts just ruined it all, because you can have one for joining small circles and the other one for betraying big ones (new accounts could not participate, but if you already had 2, you could participate with both). It was just a weird event and im not sad that it ended.

  • Getting errors when I try to join circles now. It may actually be over.

  • My circle is still up.

  • I played a devious game, I started out by betraying totally by mistake after that I tried to join circles but I also did my best to guess passwords & close circles I had some sucess tho minor and no affiliation to any "group" I only closed about 20ish circles while holding a circle of 11

  • Is there a way to find out how many circles I betrayed?

If you go to user page and then go to downvotes, every betrayal counts as a downvote.

I betrayed 137 circles. I wonder how i compare to others who made it a sport.

  • [deleted]

  • I had 4 people in my circle

  • those betrayers

  • Well, it was fun while it lasted, but I feel that it was ended too abruptly. I was being very cautious...I thought I had more time.

I was hoping they would announce that circles could merge towards the end.

Also, why are they letting a cheater stand as the winner? I know people who got 48 hour bans for using alts.

Alts can be against subreddit rules, but they are most definitely not against reddit rules in general (unless something changed and I somehow missed the resulting ragepocalypse from disgruntled users) and were not prohibited in CoT.

Well, a bunch of people got 48 hour suspensions for using alts to join one of the first big circles...their alts and their main accounts were suspended. I suspect it was because it was one of the first big circles.

O_o first I've heard of it. Just looked and no mention of it in either of the CoT megathreads, either - and it seems like the sort of thing that would've been worth taking note of? Got a link to back this up?

Hmm...somewhere pages back in my history. The circle name started with OCS...it was the r/livecounting circle. Sadly, that is a live thread, but those were some of the peeps that got the 48 hour ban. They were very unclear about alt use, but I think this circle was closely examined as it was already big by the time of the first bug fix.

It was not publicized because most people were banned for 48 hours...

  • It was pretty nice...

Actually, it was Made in Abyss that got me getting more into CoT (and the other way around afterwards). I'd been in the MiA discord for a few months, but mostly inactive more recently, and just happened to stumble upon their CoT effort. I'm glad I had a chance to join it, and doing more circle stuff meant working more closely with the guys there.

    :TEATIME:

  • I'm happy my circle survived.

  • What the hell did "you only get one" mean?

You could only claim/make one circle. You made a private password for the circle, and shared it with people. When people entered the password, they were given the choice to Join or Betray. If they Betrayed, no one else could join your circle, it was done and over. That was your only one.

  • I had fun getting people to send me keys. Circle Hitman was the most fun role IMO.

  • those betrayers

  • [deleted]

If you didn't build a large circle then you wouldn't really understand all the work that goes into it. Days of effort destroyed in an instant just so someone in the swarm can get another notch in their belt. The amount of effort put into obtaining a key to betray pales in comparison.

I can understand why some people wanted to play the bad guy, but I can also understand why the victims of that behavior would get a little crazy.

You really need to fix your spammy fucking bot.

It works really well, but it triggers on c i r c l e which is a pretty common word around here. If you can give a good word which is less common just give it

Here's an idea: how about just not running a spambot at all?

It doesn't even "work really well", you spammed this comment section with 3000+ comments.

Did the bot harm you or something? Its only says i hope you liked the event greetings /r/circularswarm

It's harming my reddit browsing experience, yes. It's in my inbox 10 times in a row, blowing my phone up with notifications. Just stop. It's pissing me off enough that I'll probably write to the admins about it. It's not even useful, it's just attention-seeking behavior. "We're the swarm, look at us!" Stop.

I’ll stop it. This was just a test on this subreddit and i now have the code.

I get cussing them out but attempting to murder someone over a circle is pretty crazy.

As I said, when I meant crazy I meant death threats and shit. Maybe I didn't make it clear but I did not mean just someone cussing another person out. I mean intent to harm over the circles was a bit crazy.
