Interesting fact, other translations of the Bible will inform the readers that John 7:53-8:11, the woman caught in adultery, was not found in the original manuscripts.
One of my favorite verses is both in Joshua and Psalms; Meditate on the word day and night. That doesn't mean just read it in the morning and before you go to bed but it means to dwell on it, Deuteronomy 6:5-9 says it well: "....impress them (commands/the word of God) on your children. Talk about them (the Word of God) when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them to your foreheads (I think the mark of the best in Revelation references this, I think the marks on our hands and heads can be metaphorical marks by what we do and what we dwell on.)..."
"...who meditates in his law day and night. That person is like a tree plants by streams of water, which yields it fruit in season and whose leaves does not wither, whatever they do prospers. " Psalms 1:3
20 “Anyone who beats their male or female slave with a rod must be punished if the slave dies as a direct result, 21 but they are not to be punished if the slave recovers after a day or two, since the slave is their property.
Why does the perfectly righteous god condone beating and owning other people as property?
Maybe consider that God wasn't condoning and saying slavery is good but giving guidelines for something that is, perhaps also making it more humane than it would be without the law.
What about when Egypt had slaves, from reading Exodus and about the Israelites being enslaved in Egypt, I wonder if the conditions were worse, let alone in the USA, or other places, speaking of which human trafficking, sex trafficking because we live in a perverse world that says sexual immorality and lust is good and normal.
Secondly, back then when countries/ nations fought other nations, what do you think happened? You know Israel had and still has many enemies, God also told the Israelites under Saul's leadership to destroy every man, woman, and child from I believe the Amelikites or something like that. Slavery sounds like a more humane option. Nations fought and conquered in that time period, it was part of life.
Additionally, since you bring up human trafficking and sex trafficking, have you read Numbers 31? God tells them to distribute the 32,000 virgin women they just kidnapped amongst themselves as plunder. This is who you worship?
Does god know slavery is wrong? Why do you make assumptions that his goodness is limited to the societal norms of the time? This law was given immediately after the hebrews were freed from 400 years of slavery, could there possibly have been a better time to say "Guys, you have experienced how awful slavery was. As an all good god, I must forbid you from owning other people as property.
What were his guidelines? You can own them, and beat them, just don't kill them. Listen to yourself, you are forced to say it wasn't bad to be enslaved. And I am glad you bring up the Amelikites, what you just described is god ordering a genocide. And his reasoning for killing off an entirely innocent race of people? 400 years prior, their ancestors did battle with the hebrews. They did nothing.
His goodness isn't limited to the societal norms at the time but he placed guidelines and rules on those norms to make the norms more humane unlike anybody else at the time.
The Amelikites weren't innocent, firstly nobody is, second if memory serves me correctly, they weren't remotely innocent and were described as evil.
Why did god specifically say they were to be wiped out? It had nothing to do with those people. It was retaliation for 400 years prior.
15 Samuel said to Saul, “I am the one the Lord sent to anoint you king over his people Israel; so listen now to the message from the Lord. 2 This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘I will punish the Amalekites for what they did to Israel when they waylaid them as they came up from Egypt. 3 Now go, attack the Amalekites and totally destroy[a] all that belongs to them. Do not spare them; put to death men and women, children and infants, cattle and sheep, camels and donkeys.’”
The punishment was for a specific retaliation, an event that these people did not participate in. So yes, they were innocent of the crime that the punishment was for. You are wrong, and so is god.
None of this disputes the fact that god punishes for crimes not committed. That is by definition unjust. Is it okay for my great great grandchildren whom I will never meet to be punished for anything I do by someone in authority?
As for the protection of his people, I would submit Hitler. Where was he then?
Look at the conversation. The guilty one is god himself. Genocide, slavery, unjust punishment for crimes not committed. Even murdering babies, are you really saying they were not innocent?
Dude, you read the Bible to question the one who created you, who created all things, who owns time and the world; you are breathing because He allows you to. There is still time to accept God. I hope He has mercy on your soul. (If you comment in an attacking tone, I will not respond).
(Non-attacking tone) Those are claims. Can you provide evidence? I have and can continue to provide bible verses that show your god is a moral monster. Slavery, rape, genocide. Do you think if a man commits a crime his wife and child should be punished in his place? That's exactly what god thinks. You think I need a savior, from whom exactly do I need saving? Probably the one who will burn people for eternity. Infinite punishment for finite offenses, that is not justice.
If you end up having difficulty reading the KJV I highly suggest checking out the NIV.
However if you want to go deeper into theological study later on, I’d suggest getting the ESV study Bible😁
In my personal opinion both of these version are not only easier to read but are more helpful contextually because they are direct translations from the Greek and Hebrew manuscripts.
KJV is a translation of the Latin vulgate which is a translation of the Greek and Hebrew:)
I'd like to recommend the NRSV-Ue instead, the KJV is not only hard to read but at points quite sloppily translated. If you want to go really deep, next year around September we should be getting a new Oxford Annotated Bible using this updated translation. That will be an awesome read!
Hard to read? Like what? 😂 it takes 3rd grade education to understand the KJV not hard to understand at all. I don't get or understand you people how you all most of you say the KJV is hard to read lol 🤣. It's not hard at all for me to read, I'm 32 years old and have read it since I was 8 years old and never had any problems understanding it.
You're probably right, it's overall not tremendously hard to read if I think about it. Modern Bibles are translated so plainly that I suppose it looks harder by comparison. But I agree, if I look at it objectively, it's not so bad. I should say not everyone who reads an English Bible is a native speaker (I'm not) so that's a factor as well.
Everyone reads at different paces and has different preferences. So KJV works for you, and NIV works for me, so what? They are both the Bible.
Yes, I find it taxing to read KJV and I prefer NIV or ESV not only because of its use of modern English (keep in mind I am a theatre major with a minor in creative writing, I’ve done the Shakespeare and old English I’m very familiar with it, for some people the text is just hard to understand and there is nothing wrong with that, but for me the issue isn’t understanding, the issue is when I read the Bible I want to focus on the word and learn the deeper significance of the passage I can’t do that if I’m too focused on translating it in my head into more modern terms so I can get the most out of the passage when I can easily get a Bible that uses modern language AND is a direct translation of the Greek manuscripts so I don’t lose anything in doing so.
And purely factually speaking the KJV is the translation of the Latin vulgate which is a translation of the greek. So there are likely to be more discrepancies with the meaning of certain words.
That being said, at the end of the day there is no “superior” bible translation, and the best way to learn the significance of certain words and the historical context is to just go directly to the Greek and Hebrew texts, no English text will ever do the original texts justice.
Congrats! Start in the New Testament. That's were we read about Jesus and His teachings. Read it twice. You won't understand it all the first time around.
Do not do that... the Old Testament is the law of Abraham, fulfilled through Jesus Christ. It is just as important as the New Testament. Jesus was Jewish.
Yes he fulfilled the old laws so we can follow his teachings. Jesus did not want us following the old ways. He wants us to follow his way. I am not confused.
I reccomend you start with Gospel of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John
They talk about Jesus's life and teaching
Don't just read it
Memorize it, apply it to your everyday life, obey it even when it's hard, let it speak to your heart and let it shape you and the way you think and act
Let God reveal himself to you through and let The Holy Spirit guide you and help you understand
Matthew 16:24
"Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me."
Pray, talk to God like you would to a friend and pour your heart out to him (But of course be respectful it's God you're talking to)
It will be hard, so endure and stay strong in faith
Matthew 24:12-13
"Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved."
2 Timothy 4:7-8
"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing."
You made a great choice in your first Bible. It takes me back to the first time i tried to read the Bible and got to the genealogy. You can read the Bible front to back. I encourage you to read it thematically, and study the prophecies. Prophecies will help really strengthen your faith in that book, for which so many were martyred for.
I have gotten myself many Bible. But because I have little faith, I gave them away. Later, I regret, and I buy another Bible. My latest Bible cost me just $9. I think I have spent over $1000 on Bible.
Wow congratulations! Look at you! Go to Genesis 1 verse 26 Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”
Then 27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.
Then 28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”
We were created in the spirit and blessed before we were even born physically! Look closely at verse 27. See how it has 3 different creations. The first is God. (So God created mankind in his own image) Then Jesus: (in the image of God "HE" created them) God before this had never spoken of himself as him. It was always "So God..." next it's the Holy Spirit: male and female he created them. See how he said "Let us..." The Holy Trinity each had a hand in your creation. Each got to touch you. Neat huh? So let me explain it a little further. God created you in his image. Then Jesus turns around and creates you in the image of God and then the holy Spirit turns the image into them. (Man and woman) What does this mean. Ok look at yourself. You can only see what's down in front of you You have to actually look in the mirror to see what you truly look like. So you need to look at an image of yourself. This image is the real you The real you that you are not able to see unless something is reflecting back at you. God chose to reflect his image back to himself to see himself in order to make you in that image. which is you! made in his image. Oh it's getting good! Keep reading and ask to reveal things to you. This stuff is amazing.
24 “‘“The Lord bless you
and keep you; 25 the Lord make his face shine on you
and be gracious to you; 26 the Lord turn his face toward you
and give you peace.”’
Good book
No spoilers, but the second part changed my life.
better late than never i had the kids edition with illustrations
Interesting fact, other translations of the Bible will inform the readers that John 7:53-8:11, the woman caught in adultery, was not found in the original manuscripts.
I think it’s that it’s not in all manuscripts
It’s absent from a small minor of very important, very early manuscripts. It’s present in the vast majority of the manuscripts.
There are also many others, I think most notably Mark 16:9-20 and the last sentence of the Lord's prayer.
"...who meditates in his law day and night. That person is like a tree plants by streams of water, which yields it fruit in season and whose leaves does not wither, whatever they do prospers. " Psalms 1:3
Have you meditated on this one?
20 “Anyone who beats their male or female slave with a rod must be punished if the slave dies as a direct result, 21 but they are not to be punished if the slave recovers after a day or two, since the slave is their property.

The punishment was for a specific retaliation, an event that these people did not participate in. So yes, they were innocent of the crime that the punishment was for. You are wrong, and so is god.
Well scripture talks about the sins of a father impacting his children, even such as the Israelites having to wander around the desert for 40 years.
And maybe they would have attacked Israel again and God was preemptively protecting Israel.
None of this disputes the fact that god punishes for crimes not committed. That is by definition unjust. Is it okay for my great great grandchildren whom I will never meet to be punished for anything I do by someone in authority?
As for the protection of his people, I would submit Hitler. Where was he then?
Nobody is innocent, we're all sinners that deserve punishment.
Idk I'm sure God had His reasons.
Look at the conversation. The guilty one is god himself. Genocide, slavery, unjust punishment for crimes not committed. Even murdering babies, are you really saying they were not innocent?
Still avoiding the point on slavery?
Dude, you read the Bible to question the one who created you, who created all things, who owns time and the world; you are breathing because He allows you to. There is still time to accept God. I hope He has mercy on your soul. (If you comment in an attacking tone, I will not respond).

The old and new testament hold equal significance in this religion. Beware of those who tell you otherwise, they are misguided.
It would be like watching the sequel to a movie without having seen the first one.
Also, it is the Spirit of God interpreted and spoken through man, NOT GOD HIMSELF.
Heck YEAH
Numbers 6:24-26
24 “‘“The Lord bless you
and keep you;
25 the Lord make his face shine on you

Good for you
Thank Jesus his word spreads still.
Would recommend. Great plot.
that's awesome!!!!
Hallelujah
I LOVE KJV
