And scourged. And mocked. And humiliated. And all those other 30+ years he walked amongst us perfectly despite all carnal temptations including the tempter himself, where the rest of us fail at just about every moment we draw breath.
And the fact that he bore the Spiritual punishment of the entire world’s sin during that time and even had the Father turn his face from him in his last minutes. While the physical suffering of Christ was awful, his spiritual suffering was 1000x greater.
Being tortured for 6 to 18 hours is no joke, by any means, but other people have suffered worse. Death camps, political prisoners, etc.
Knowing you're going to die and it will hurt hits different if you 100% know that you're coming back. It's a bit like playing Fallout or Cyberpunk, your character can take crazy risks because you can just reload a save.
Besides all the physical pain people are mentioning,
He also experienced complete separation from God...which i believe is the true punishment we deserve
Hence the "my God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"
This means everlasting life, their coming to know you, the only true God, and the one whom you sent, Jesus Christ. ~John 17:3
there is actually to us one God, the Father, from whom all things are and we for him; and there is one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things are and we through him. ~1 Corinthians 8:6
Jesus said that the Father is the only one true God. (John 17:3)
(1 Corinthians 8:6) also states that the Father is one true God.
Nowhere does it say that Jesus or holy spirit is the one true God in the Bible.
Jesus also never claimed to be God or never said to worship Him or holy spirit , in fact He directed all worship toward the Father. (John 4:23)
Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshiperswill worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.
Well the way Jesus died was pretty gribbly; ya know, getting flogged, tortured then nailed to a couple of wooden beams and left to hang there for hours. That sucks. Then He had to go to Hell after that, so that has to royally suck too.
The point is no god as we can conceive of or have conceived of should ever bother to degrade himself by entering into the conditions of human and material life much less to enter into the world he brought into being as a simple, poor, marginalized and conquered person which has kind of been the default conditions for most of humanity at all time. Nothing and no one was holding God on the hook for this has all turned out not for where it is going.
The drama of God in Jesus entering into and joining the human experience and condition into the life of God started way before Jesus was born of Mary and has continued on since then. It is the entire act of God joining his own life to ours and our world. God has chosen by love to not be God without us and has bound Godself to us to suffer and enjoy all things with us and to bind humanity to Godself so that death does not swallow us permanently into oblivion and nothingness but that even in and through death humanity has life in God.
You gotta understand Jesus laid down ALL His powers to be human.
All those miracles? Supernatural knowledge? Every supernatural thing He did was a Gift of the Spirit, as Paul talks about in Corinthians. Hence why Jesus says "greater things than these will you do".
He was 100% human. He was born, had to grow up, had to learn, fear, love, had the existential ponderings we have about death, plus more about His calling as the Christ... He didn't carry around with Him an eternity of memory, only the experiences of His brief life on earth. In the same way He ha to walk from one city to another, despite God being omnipresent.
So He had to face death exactly as we did.
And, just like He was raised from the dead, so are we! That's WHY we celebrate His ressurection - it guaramtees our own. Paul said there isn't any point in Christianity without the Resurrection.
But even if Christ's torturous death WAS just a blip on the timeline for Him, and barely inconvenienced Him, it was STILL enough to propitiate for our sins in the eyes of God. No sacrifice He could have made on this planet could inconvenience the God of the universe! He could suffer for billions of years in hellfire and it wouldn't even be an eyeblink to God.
Yet God chose to identify with our human suffering anyway, just because He loves us.
God forces Himself to undergo a human birth, lives for 30 years as a human, heals and helps for 3 years, is marred beyond human recognition as THE sacrifice for ALL humans, sends Himself to Hell and comes back after 3 days.
Sounds like more than just a day and a half or a weekend.
He was on earth for 33 years. He has grieved over mankind and served us providing for us this whole time the magnitude of His heing and purity of his heart extend beyond pur comprehension. He is perfect. Anything less than perfection is a grave injustice towards him. Even if it was just a weekend which it wasnt the sacrifice is off the charts. He suffered it all. He still suffers us. Because He loves YOU he bore all of your affliction and wrong doing, your bodily pain my dude and spiritual and mental anguish. He took your despair amd dishonor upon himself. Not just a life time.but an eternities worth. For you personally intimately and also everyone you ever loved or admired. Even people you hated all of it upon and within him. He bore it and overcame it on our behalf. Not on paper for legal rights but in His being in open daylight. Not even privately but on display and without protest. Willingly.
GOD is the Father, Jesus is the son, the holy spirit is the power of GOD given/shared with Jesus as authority over us all . Jesus was the one to take human form, as a poor , ugly man , facing humility, living many years as human, showing and influencing humanity in the way we should be , as GOD intended when HE created us .
Satan has ahold of your thoughts, whispering this in your ear , trying to influence you to undermine Jesus and what HE did for us , releasing us from the evil Satan was controlling the world with, by going through the priest, which at that time, was the direct link to GOD. But human arrogance in a place of power is easily corrupted. That's why after the crucifixion, during the 3 days , Jesus went into hell and declared His authority over the world, releasing humanity of Bondage, and then made it known , in Matthew 23 , that He is the way, the truth and the life, that NO MAN comes to the FATHER accept through Him.
Giving everyone the open door to come directly to JESUS in order to be forgiven and speak to GOD .
Jesus and GOD are 2 different beings, that is made obvious throughout the bible. The holy spirit is the truth and power of GOD given equally to Jesus for His ultimate sacrifice as a human, for thousands of years beforehand and afterwards to the end . He didn't do it as a diety, He did it as Human, that every lash, bruise, cut, exposed bone from flesh being ripped off of him with the whips etc. Could be felt . No human on earth then , or now could have survived even an 8th of that beating, but Jesus had to, before GOD would allow Him to ascend from the human body and become pure spirit again. Hence why Jesus cried out to GOD, asking why has He forsaken Him.
It was because during the death, all the sins of the world were on Jesus, and GOD can't look upon sin , so Jesus suffered until the very last , most horrific sin was paid for.
My friend, it was far more than just a weekend trip .
The only way that manipulating thought would become a dark hole digging in, is when you observe in the bible where it states that , 1 day is 1 thousand years to GOD and 1 thousand years is a day.
That's how Satan starts you on a negative path , blinding you from the obvious truth, simply by getting you so focused on something that is pretty much irrelevant. Hence the belief that GOD and JESUS are the same being. How many ways does the Bible have to say it, that clearly explains they are separate beings with the same power. These 3 scriptures written and that Jesus said alone point it out , aside from the many other places that speak of it, showing the 2 are separate with 1 power.
John 8:29: And he that sent me is with me, the Father hath not left me alone, for I do always those things that please him.
John 17:4 I have glorified thee on the earth, I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.
Hebrews 12:2: Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
So don't be deceived my friend, or trouble yourself with idle influential babblings of Satan. Instead, go speak in prayer to JESUS, and the truth will be spoken to you. (Hence now) . Take what I wrote here and go research that . Not through worldly understanding or interpretation. But through the truth written by GOD in the hearts and minds of the witnesses that watched and were told of it by GOD and JESUS.
Build your life around a full relationship with JESUS, and the bible meanings are not interpretations , but become obvious facts that are backed up over and over throughout the bible. You will see far more truths , instruction and stories written when Jesus shows you how and where they connect together.
I’ve heard this one numerous times and it always makes me chuckle I think it is less how long he was dead for and more the suffering and torture he went through from sentencing to the cross people do tend to use the died for your sins line but I think it’s more appropriate to say suffered and died for your sins
Closer to 2.5 days actually if counting in 24 hour periods. Jesus died at 3pm Friday evening and was raised on Sunday morning.
As far as "what's the big deal"?
Jesus was fully human when he came to Earth mind you. He temporarily relinquished his godly power to the father. This means that he felt temptation as we do, pain as we do, etc.
Now with that said, if you'd like to find out the big deal, you can imagine the following:
Imagine if somebody arrested you right now (for something which you didn't do). They took you to a kangaroo court that decided on your guilt even before you had a trial. They then made sure that you were sentenced to death by their leaders.
Then they handed you over. You were then scourged by a leather cord with tiny metal beads repeatedly over and over until your blood was all over the ground and you could no longer hold yourself up.
Then afterward, you were given a large wooden cross to carry for a long distance up the road to the place you would be executed. However, bleeding out and barely having energy from the loss of blood, you fall under the weight of the cross multiple times. Finally after getting someone from the crowd to help, you make it to Golgotha. There the soldiers lay you down on your cross and grab 8 inch long nails (and approx 1 inch wide) and they bore those down into your feet and the base of your hands. They then have your cross lifted onto the pre-built mount in the ground and you hang there.
You gasp for air. Already weak, with each breath, you force your body up and then collapse again under the weight, You do this repeatedly over and over again further aggitating the wounds on your back with every breath. You cannot move any of your body parts. You are in agony and don't know how long this will go on for. Meanwhile, you see all of your false accusers snickering and mocking you below. At the same time, you see those you were close to and your family looking up at you with heartbreak. You see your mother crying below you wishing that she could be up there with you. And you notice your disciple feeling like he failed you.
This goes on for hours. Your body slowly shuts down more and more. You hunger and thirst to the point you can't take it...but then your pain and inability to breathe also makes itself known. You are so miserable you long to die but you can't. Then suddenly you hear another crucified person next to you putting you down and mocking you. You then hear the voice of someone kind asking you to welcome him into your kingdom with you. As hard as it is, you manage to draw a breath for long enough to let him know that you will bring him with you to the father.
Finally after enough time of agony, you eventually die.
...and why did you go through all of it? Here's the kicker...to save the very ones who hated you, disobeyed you, and ridiculed you in the first place. It was to pay the price for THEIR sins so that someday, if they repented, they had the opportunity to live as if they had never sinned.
Well, I'd be willing to meet in the middle and round it to 2 days. "1.5" falls short a bit.
The Bible though isn't counting 24 hour periods. Friday is considered the "first day" while Sunday is considered the "3rd day" (IE: "on the third day").
Awful for certain, but not unique in that crucifixion was a common practice then that thousands of people endured. What is unique is Jesus had the divine omniscience that He would survive the experience, whereas other crucifixion victims lacked that advantage.
It wasn’t just a weekend while walking on the earth he knew what was going to happen to him from the beginning ,Imagine the people you spending time with will betray and deny you . Imagine there is a clock above your head and at a certain time you will be absolutely massacred to death Christ knew what day and time this would be none of us could take that without going mentally insane
The bit where he was crucified.
So he had a very very bad weekend.
That's kind of what I think, too.
Have you ever died?
Christ defeated death and sin on the cross. That’s the purpose of the crucifixion. Now through him, we are able to repent enter paradise
I mean if its not a big deal you're welcome to try and die for 1.5 days then out of your own power get back up
Besides all the physical pain people are mentioning, He also experienced complete separation from God...which i believe is the true punishment we deserve Hence the "my God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"
No, that’s not true cause Christ is God.
Christ is God, but He was also man. He felt what we felt, whether that be hunger, thirst or the feeling of being separated from God
Jesus is not God. The Father is God only.
But Christ claims to be God. Father is the one true God. Christ is also the one true God. And the Holy Spirit is also the one true God.
(John 4:23)
This is heresy.
Yes.
Heresy - adherence to a religious opinion contrary to church dogma ;
an opinion or doctrine contrary to church dogma
dissent or deviation from a dominant theory, opinion, or practice
an opinion, doctrine, or practice contrary to generally accepted beliefs or standard
I reject man-made doctrines. I will listen to Jesus who said the Father is the only true God and called the Father His God.
But Christ claimed to be God.
He didn't. What makes you think this way?
You are missing him bearing the weight of all evil and sufering in history
if he did all that, then why is there conditions involved to receive this "gift?"
Being crucified was like stubbing a toe compared to taking on the sin of the world
Well the way Jesus died was pretty gribbly; ya know, getting flogged, tortured then nailed to a couple of wooden beams and left to hang there for hours. That sucks. Then He had to go to Hell after that, so that has to royally suck too.

Sacrifice is not about what you give up. Sacrifice is about what God receives. God received Christ at his ascension.

He spent 33 years living a perfect life. despised and rejected , alone, with no one like him on the earth.
He was innocent, and was betrayed by the very people he came to save.
To quote Mr. Deity, "36 hours tops. 35 if we do it the weekend when they set the clocks forward."

I’ve heard this one numerous times and it always makes me chuckle I think it is less how long he was dead for and more the suffering and torture he went through from sentencing to the cross people do tend to use the died for your sins line but I think it’s more appropriate to say suffered and died for your sins
But even then, when compared to other humans, that's really small and almost negligible, especially considering he is living forever
And also that he gets to be the ruler of the universe.
Yeah and its no big deal definitely.. plus he died for ur sins… so u better sin otherwise he died for nothing
Closer to 2.5 days actually if counting in 24 hour periods. Jesus died at 3pm Friday evening and was raised on Sunday morning.

Hey ! Would YOU give up a weekend - a single weekend ?! Heh. Didn't think so.
I’ve had longer hangovers
Have you ever had an original thought?

Gensis 1 And God called the light day, and the darkness He called night. And there was evening and there was morning, one day.
