• Have everything but the dog. Wonder why the shelter isn’t an option for them??

I managed shelters for a decade. people bitched about our adoption fees, which included s/n, fully vaccinated, microchipped and a free evaluation at a vet.. our fees were $50-$150

And those fees you guys charged saved countless animals from bad situations.

If you have an issue with spending $150 one time for your pet. What happens when there's an emergency.

what most often happens is they bring the now sick or hurt animal back to the shelter and we incur hundreds to thousands in vet care debt 🙃

    Jesus Christ people fucking suck

I’ve just gotten my first dog last week and I’d pay all the money I have to make sure this girl is happy

there is absolutely nothing I wouldn't do for my dogs. I am completely fucked in life right now but they're utd on vaccines, fed, and I make their lives as fun as possible. I should rehome them but I think it would kill me so I'm just gonna keep holding out hope things get better before making the decision

I hope things do get better for you!

thank you, it's been a trash year for sure but at least I have two happy idiots beating each other in the snow right now

I'm not a dog lover; I'm a cat fan, but I totally understand the feeling of wanting to do everything for your pets. I also hope things start looking up for you.

I also have 2 cats who are included in that statement! :)

    Name checks out! 🐶🐶🐶

thanks! an elderly german volunteer used to call me it at the shelter. I hate it now because how arrogant of me but my account is a million years old and I refuse to make another lol

    I love this backstory

I have to ruin it: she lost her husband, who she volunteered with at the shelter for like 15 years, by not only helping our animals but making sure staff members were ok (over worked, under paid, once I worked doubles 24 days in a row because we just didn't have staff and she brought me lunch EVERY DAY when she heard about it) and wrote us a letter thanking us for all of the good years but that it was too hard to come back without him. we never saw her again

Same. I adopted a senior dog last spring, paid an extra $100 donation to the shelter to help with the next ones. It was still only $350 total. Love that little man!

I wasn’t able to find much at all in my area for adoption so I bought a puppy from a reputable breeder.

It’s not cheap lol, delivery for her alone was about $1000

    Congrats on the new dog!

Thank you! She’s currently taking a nap on top my chest with her little face inside my ear lol, tired from her 12 week shots she had today

Awwww that sounds precious! Would you be comfortable linking a puppy pic?

Awwwwww sweet baby! Look at those floppy ears! Thanks for sharing!

    Omg so adorable.

I adopted a cat from a shelter 3 months ago. Now it got really sick and I’m paying without thinking about it. It’s my responsibility now to take care of him and do anything to keep him healthy. Never thought about bringing him back. Some people are trash…

I adopted two cats from a hoarding situation in late 2023, a tux female and a silver and black tabby male. I then made arrangements to get the male fixed, as he kept bothering the female, and despite her slapping him upside the head he wouldn't leave her alone. Then, my husband and I both got the flu, then we had an ice storm, then the vet got the flu, and we discovered why Buddy the male wouldn't leave Missy the female alone when she had two kittens inside one of our cat carriers. One didn't survive, but we kept the one who did, and he looks just like his daddy Buddy. We'd named him Rosalie at first, thinking he was a girl, but we were wrong and now his name is Junior. It cost us to get them all fixed and all up to date on shots and treated for parasites, but now they're all healthy and lovable. And I wouldn't trade them for anything. I'd eat ramen if I had to to keep them.

I specifically haven’t adopted yet (despite the many fee waived events dropping the adult dog adoption fee from $500 to $0) because I was waiting to get settled in a new job with a salary that allows me to go to the vet whenever I would need to without worrying about whether I could afford the fee. It feels so obvious - your animal will need care! Even if they’re never sick, they need vaccines, check ups, food?? What do these people expect, that the cat is going to get a job to pay for its own kibble?

They come onto the internet to cry their cat or dog needs to go to the vet or they start a go fund me.

I have 2 XL sized dogs. I spend more than $ 150 a month just on food.

Maybe we can suggest one of those robot dogs you get for kids.

    My mom’s a veterinarian. She’s heard “a bullet is $2” more than you’d think.

that's nothing from USA, I recently adopted a cat ( just wait outside with cat food until one came) and he was already sick, I spent about half of a monthly minimum wage from my country in a few days, but that's the right thing to do since he's my responsibility when I kidnapping him.

just wait outside with cat food until one came

So... basically you just hacked the Cat Distribution System. 🤭

Yup, and I get a lovely orange handsome. Totally worth it.

I'm in the US and managed a county run shelter where our fees never exceeded $150 for puppies. private rescue shelter? yeaaah I watched them time and time again put up puppies for $400-$700 and it's not hard to find rescues charging wild amounts for purebred highly sought after breeds. the difference in them vs county is we don't have a choice what animal comes through the door. they take whatever animals they want

That's so sad, love doesn't know about breeds. All friends with tails deserved to be loved.

I have a dear friend that runs a rescue. Their normal adoption fees are $75 for a fully vetted pet. Yes, they do charge more for "designer breeds." They took in a pregnant blue nosed pitty a friend of mine found stray, and ended up getting $400 for each puppy. They also spend hundreds on senior stray rescues and recently spent thousands on animal care for a dog that was set on fire. (He's perfectly fine and in his furever home now!)

I'm in Texas, so our stray animal situation is dire. They also pay to transport pets all over the country to their new homes.

We don't seem to have a county shelter here, but there are a lot of rescue groups that bring dogs up from shelters in the south to put them up for adoption here in new england. Their adoption fees are a couple hundred dollars, which they say just covers their costs. And they're not designer dogs or purebreds or anything. But I can see how all the logistics costs would add up for that type of operation.

Even at $150, it's probably only a third to half of what a veterinarian would charge. If I ever get a cat again, it's going to be an adult cat.

absolutely! my girl wasn't altered yet when I took her home from the shelter and I didn't want them to do it (I worked there and did not like their process) so I called my vet and got what I consider on the low end for a spay - $440

Meanwhile, we have people here in town that have 'oops' puppies because their dog and the neighbors dog decided to have some adult doggy time. They can sometimes give them to good homes, but a lot of time they end up at a shelter.

Depending on the breed, you can spay your dogs before their first heat.

Thats exactly how it works in my area... Totally worth every penny! adopt dont shop

Where I live you can “foster“ a dog indefinitely. Theoretically someone could come along and adopt it out from under you, but realistically the foster home is the most likely to adopt the dog.

if we had any long term dogs in foster we would still provide all vet care and food until they got adopted, or the foster could choose to just keep them for free at any time. if you take some 8+ year old pit mix no one will even look at for over 2 years into foster we'd bend over backwards for you

meanwhile the county shelter I was at wouldn't even allow me to organize a foster program or any volunteers. working in the shelter system is just fighting for your life and the animal's lives. and then crying in your car on your lunch break, like a normal adult

That’s very reasonable We adopted a cat last year -it was 220 dollars -I gave them an extra 20 The came back and gave them extra food etc .

Where I live in Canada they are charging $550 adoption fee, even more for young puppies/kittens. There is no public animal shelters? They are all sent to rescues after 7 days, the ones I've checked have really intrusive application processes (such as inspecting your house, several meet and greets with existing pets). I have to admit its really hard to put yourself through all that and pay a premium when you can find a dog on Kijiji and handle the veterinary care yourself.

Plus, I don't know about the shelters you were at, but at the one I volunteered at for 4 years, every now and again they did a free adoption day, or pay what you want.

the county shelter did absolutely nothing but it was a shit hole. the private shelter I worked at had a local auto group sponsor every adoption for a day and our shelter would be 99.9% empty by the end of the day. county shelter I worked at in the south couldn't give dogs and cats away so practically every weekend was free adoption weekend. snagged my girl that way

That's not expensive at all, given that suite of services included. A bargain, really. And a helpful screening barrier to irresponsible would-be pet owners.

    That’s a steal !

Because the shelters charge for the spay/neuter and the chip.

And also people who hoard animals, repeatedly return animals to the shelter, or have been convicted of mistreating anjmals are often banned from further adoptions.

    Just saying.

What I was thinking honestly. She’s on the NO list

Many times the shelters will have “ no fee adoption” specials. At least the ones by me do.

Yes, a couple times a year they will have a “Clear the Shelter” day.

My last 4 dogs for 25 years have been rescues. ❤️🐶

I know they want to clear the shelter, but I sort of cringe when I see that. I hope they are still vetting the adopters. If the adoption fee is keeping you from getting a pet, what are you going to do when the pet needs veterinary care?

The process is the same. My city reduced all fees to $1. They reviewed available data and found that by reducing barriers to entry, they were able to move animals through more quickly. They also had lower “recidivism” with no uptick in negative outcomes.

    Have everything but the dog.

    They're probably borrowing the carrier.

Because shelters want to make sure that you can actually afford your dogs because so many of them are getting turned in, so I imagine that if these people were checked out, there would be a real concern about them being able to provide proper care

When I adopted my Leia , a large part of the application was stating what I thought costs could be. Ex food for a year. Vet visits. Emergencies

I mean, I just adopted a farm cat that was abandoned by her mother and I have probably spent $500 this first month getting her vet checks and getting my house stocked up with everything she needs. And I still have to spay her so that’s going to be another $500 to $600.

I volunteer with a rescue group doing home visits to see if potential adopters would be a good fit-this post has red flags all over it.

  • I hate people begging for animals. They're expensive, if you're shirking off a removing fee then you sure as shit don't have the money for if they get sick and need to overnight at the vet.

A lot of people treat animals as disposable and it’s so sad =(

As someone who paid $15,000 for 3 knee surgeries for my dog (thank god for pet insurance), I cringe when I see posts like this. I pay as more for my dog’s health than I pay for my own! If you can’t even afford a rehoming fee how can you afford food and vet bills to give that baby a quality of life?!

My ex husband paid as much for therapy on one dog’s hips as some people pay in college tuition.

No shit. I've shelled out buckets of dough for my dogs.

  • This is weird as shit.

This gave me bait dog feelings 😢

I don't want to ask.  What that is.  It's something horrific that's gonna make me mad isn't it

    Yes. It is pretty horrific

    dog fighting

Oh i see my bad,  didn't know the name for it

If you are sensitive like I am, don’t even try to find out.

this always pisses everyone off but bait dogs really aren't a thing, at least not in the way everyone seems to believe they are. no one is getting cats and small dogs to toss as "bait" to fighting dogs. it serves absolutely no purpose in their tenacity to fight because a 15 lbs dog or cat is going to die pretty much instantly and it's hardly a fight. even a random sizeable dog that has never fought before isn't going to put up a real fight against a game dog. dog men fight their dogs against other game dogs, even the first time. if they lose, they lose. rescue folks just love to lable any dog with scars as a bait dog. including my girl, who I adopted as a puppy, who has massive head scarring because she had bad mange when she came into their shelter

there are definitely way more horrific things I've seen than there are people who "bait" animals but even then they're just sick fucks who like killing animals and not a dog fighter

The bait dog isn't there to fight, it's there to trick the fighting dog into the ring where they will encounter another fighting dog hence 'bait'. The bait dog has no value so even if the fighting dog doesn't kill it the people involved probably will sooner or later.

no, it isn't, and that is literally the first time I've ever heard anyone claim that. game bred dogs don't need to be tricked into fighting. they love to fight

source: I was an ACO and have been to countless half ass at best fighting ring busts

My mom was an animal control officer for many years. Bait dogs definitely do exist - pretty bizarre that’s “the first time you’ve ever heard anyone claim that” if that was actually your job

it's bizarre because it's so made up and absurd. you're free to research breed history and dog fighting/dog men to learn how absurd it is. no one is throwing a chihuahua to trick a dog into a fighting ring. never seen a "hot" dog have to be tricked into attacking random dogs, I wonder why that might be

My dog was attacked by an old fighting pit bull. They are trained to go after “small” animals, the bait animals.

Bait animals are very much a real thing and they look for small animals to not only bait them in the ring, but also train to fight/kill/ activate the pit bulls blood lust.

god I shouldn't entertain this sarah mcclachlen commercial nonsense but I'm sick and bored so ah yes, the america pit bull terrier, their original purpose of being bred for bear/boar/bull baiting, but only the little ones. I really want y'all to wander onto well established, reputable breeder and rescue pages for bully breeds and say this shit lol blood lust good lord

Ok. Say that to my almost dead dog ripped to shreds and the 4 grand vet bill I had….

Say what you want but that old fighting pit bull ran after my puppy like it was trained to do. It bit a dog before mine, then it killed another dog a few weeks later…. But sure, no blood lust there.

I think it would be easier to reason with a dog on this topic, yes. I would explain genetic dog aggression but that's going waaaay too deep for you my friend

    🤔🤔🤔

I mean, yea but the dog in question would probably bite you in the face, soooo… good luck with that I guess.

Your logic still doesn’t pay my vet bill though.

dog aggression doesn't equate human aggression any more than you believe the apbt is bred to go after small animals as "bait" because your anecdotal evidence is checks notes you have small puppy that got attacked. you're replying to someone who is a former aco but I bet you know more than me and have handled tons of dogs even!

why would anyone's logic pay your vet bills? just farting into your hands and typing on the internet at this point

You seem like a very hostile person. I hope you have a better day. Not sure why you continue to personally attack me in such a hostile way just because I have a different opinion than you.

I hope the empathy that’s been taken from you soon finds its way back to you.

    This right here

  • this person needs Nintendogs or something. The type of person to dump the pet if it needs expensive medical care or gets old.

Or a Tamagochi that they'll likely forget about...

Not if, when it needs those things

  • What the fuck?

This honestly is the worst I've ever seen.

  • Genuinely surprised they didn't drop a "my kid desperately wants a dog for Christmas" line.

    Genuinely surprised.

And the kid has cancer! And if I don’t get one you’ve ruined Christmas because I promised them a dog already!

    The DOG IS FOR CHURCH!

HAS TO BE UNDER 2 YEARS OLD! NEXT!!!!

Leukemia! And non verbal autistic! The doctor said a dog would soothe them. You monsters!

And it's going to be a support dog!

  • So what happens when the dog gets bigger and needs to go to the vet

Better hope someone gives them a bigger carrier

The dog has to stay that size and weight all its life.

  • Can you post the comments?

  • Bro thinks they’re ordering a dog off Amazon.

I have a Prime account so no shipping charges!!

  • Dang. The focus on pre-existing health care is concerning. I've always said: if you can't afford a vet, you can't afford a pet.

It's been a few years since my last pet passed away, and my finances haven't been stable enough to adopt a new one, no matter how much I'd like to. 💔

  • DO NOT GIVE THIS PERSON A DOG.

Please. Do not give this person a dog.

Actually, do nit give this person a bag of chips.

  • I'm in dog rescue and unfortunately, people of this are very common. Especially when it comes to finding a dog in rescue. Everyone has an extensive laundry list of things they want in dog, especially a dog they are required to pay for, but, nobody realizes that there is a fucking reason why these dogs are in the shelter or in rescue or are being given away.

No one is giving away a dog like, especially a puppy/dog THAT young, that without there being some serious issues with the dog, like it needing expensive medical treatment/lifelong medical treatments or severe behavioral issues.

I am just going to assume that these people would not deal with either of those.

You put this really, really well! It also shows me this lady has absolutely no understanding of dogs/dog people. Presumably, the person giving away this dog has dropped a bunch of money on medical care AND gone through the intense (in my experience) work of raising a puppy. IF (big if) for some reason they needed to rehome their beloved puppy/young dog, they’d have their pick of very good homes. They would not hand it over to a weirdo on Craigslist because she has the right sized kennel.

Yeah, I am sure that they expect this puppy/young dog to be completely potty trained, have house manners, does not destroy things, does not play bite, does not have separation anxiety, does not need physical exercise, does not need mental stimulation, does not bark/howl excessively (especially when put in the crate or when left alone), does not have any food allergies, must be good with kids of all ages, must be good with cats/other dogs, does not shed, must come when called without hesitation, etcetera.

People like this want toys, not toy breeds. There are also very few breeds, especially non-designer breeds ajd even then, that weigh 15lbs or less fully grown. You're very very limited with such a small weight requirement. Not to say they arent out there. My 21 year old forever foster is some sort of terrier mix and shes a full 8lbs (fat girl used to be 6lbs when I got her over a year ago but shes been a complete garbage disposal lately and wanting to eat 3x/day+).

What a tiny Bebe! I’m sure she is an adorable old lady :) Totally agree on dog size, and I don’t think people understand just how coveted small dogs are. Like, maybe you’d have luck if you’re looking for a large mixed-breed... (This lady should not have any pets, imo.) My pup is 5 now, and she’s basically the perfect dog now, but man- she put us through the wringer during puppyhood! I think people like this don’t understand the amount of work, time, and love it takes with dogs. More importantly, they don’t get that it’s a living creature with its own feelings, personality, and needs (emotional and physical). It makes me so sad that some poor soul could end up stuck in that stupid kennel whenever this horrid person doesn’t feel like she wants a dog anymore. Ugh.

  • Isn’t that a cat carrier? They want to use that as their dog’s crate? Not even a teacup chihuahua is going to want that.

I have a bigger cat carrier

Right, this is the size carrier you bring home a kitten in… This person is weird.

  • It got so spicy in the comments, how do I make an update post.

Maybe you can make a new post and link it to this one?

  • I see a lot of posts looking to rehome dogs, but generally they're larger mutts, not tiny decorator breeds.

  • This isn't a choosy beggar, this is choosy demander. Even worse than a choosy beggar. If I ever find a djinni lamp, my wish will be for the ability to reach through my computer screen and smack idiots like this. More satisfying than any amount of money.

  • This lady needs to be on a permanent ‘banned from pet ownership list.’ I’m sure she also expects it to be well trained. Not a lot of well-trained, young, small dogs being handed out for free… Maybe I’m being dramatic but this does not appear to be someone who understands dogs or will provide them with a decent life.

  • It rubs the lotion on it's skin vibes

  • These are the type of people that even the overcrowded humane society won’t allow to adopt dogs

  • They forgot to mention that it had to be trained as well...

“We don’t understand why our 9 week old puppy isn’t housebroken yet!”

They're assuming it'll be since they want one that's precisely betwen 12 and 30 months old ...

  • I hope to hell no poor dog has to suffer living with that thing.

  • The “free puppy” I got off Nextdoor three months ago has racked up over $5,000 in vet bills. I was prepared for that. This person is clearly not. No adoption fee, must have shots. They’re never planning on updating a dog’s vaccines or providing preventative care. This is exactly why rescues are careful who they give dogs to. Get a stuffed animal.

  • If this person gets their hands on a puppy I feel so bad for them ugh

  • If they are this stingy and demanding, they shouldn’t adopt a dog really an animal requires care , to be educated and money to pay for his care

  • It's called the ASPCA, lady. Oh wait, there's a fee. Why don't you just drive around your ghetto neighborhood and catch stray dogs, JFC

  • Red flags for days…

  • This does not seem like someone who can afford to take care of a dog.

Its not. Its someone who is likely collecting dogs for ... unpleasant purposes.

  • I really do not like their demanding tone. Get bent, asshole. 👎

  • They could be trying to circumvent a landlord check - my humane society checks with the landlord if you rent.

  • Anybody else getting vibes of "looking for Christmas dinner"?

  • If they can provide for a pet, why does it have to be fully up to date on medical?

  • Her whole attitude is a red flag. “The dog must fit this box”. I’d never give her an animal based on attitude alone.

  • My dog’s food alone is almost $200 a month. Do people know expensive pets are?

  • This person is out of their mind. I just got my dog fixed and it was over $800. No one is going to adopt a dog, pay to get the dog fixed, on top of all the other vet bills( vaccines, heart-worm meds etc.) just to give the dog away. Did this post get any reply’s? I bet the comments tore them up..

  • I’m less concerned about the entitlement and more concerned about their plans for this animal.

  • Sadly, they'll probably actually get a dog from someone.

  • Must have 17” dog 😳

  • what happens if the dog they get is allergic to whatever food they bought? Or if the collar doesn’t fit the dog? Or the brush they have doesn’t work well for the type of fur the dog has? I’m assuming these are the types of things they would have if they are already stocked up for a dog

  • I’m going to hold out my hand, put a dog into it. Now. . . . Please.

  • I also have a casserole dish the same size

  • Guys.

    This is big.

This is an actual choosy beggar.

    Holy fuck it’s really happening!!

Not just someone asking in a buy nothing group. Not someone offering a salary that OP thinks is too low. Not a literal homeless person looking for help…

A true choosy beggar. This is a big deal.

  • Bait dog. Run and report.

  • This reminds me of the Monty Python scene with Arthur Pewty who wants to be a lion dompteur 😂 "I've got a hat"

  • I realize it’s close to the holidays, but wow, I really dislike most humans.

  • it already makes me nervous when people give pets away for free online (and yes, not all rescues are perfect but I would hope anyone has at least some kind of process to make sure the new owner isn't like this even if you plan on waiving any fees)

  • I adopted a rescue this summer, and have adopted 3 others in the past. Private rescue charged $250, my latest was $450 from a county shelter, bc she was 7 months old, and spay and vaxx were included. Was great to have it all included in one price. (Pacific NW)

  • I should take a picture of my parking space and see what cars I can only accept

  • Why can’t they go to the shelter? There are dogs in the shelter that need homes.

  • Why does a dog need a carrier?

  • Hey at least they have a carrier

  • If you guys want to laugh a bit, just replace the word "dog" with "child."

  • Guarantee if someone gave these people a dog, it would be in a shelter within a month.

  • The first round of vaccinations/spaying/deworming/flea care, &c. are just the beginning of the lifetime medical care required for a pet. If you can't afford this relatively modest initial cost, you are not equipped to take on a being who will be dependent on you for life and health.

  • … so they need a cat then, not a dog lol

  • if you cant afford a shelter adoption fee you can't afford to take care of a dog. what is wrong with people??

  • "Listen, I've already purchased the carrier so the dog HAS to be LESS than 17 inches long. Take your 18 inch dog elsewhere. I swear to god if that dog gets to be a single ounce over 15 lbs he's going back."

  • Tell me you don't deserve to have a dog without saying it....wouldn't trust this lot with a rock

  • They can’t afford a dog and any dog deserves better.

  • I have a carrier that size, and I use it for my large male cat. When he was younger I used a real cat carrier, but he outgrew it.

  • This person doesn’t deserve a dog.

  • Why would they put the dog in a carrier?

  • Oh wow it's rare on the sub these days to see someone who is begging and being choosy about it instead of just lowballing.
