A man came in a few days before Christmas for two gift cards. He told me about how he went everywhere and couldn’t find a card for the amount he wanted. Long story short, he did not pay for them and he was long gone once I realized. So sorry to whoever received them, I still feel so bad :(

These things happen, don't beat yourself up too much over it. Thats inconvenient but if the customer wasn't even charged for the gift cards then it's really not a huge deal. People have made way worse mistakes. The recipients will probably end up contacting customer service and getting it sorted out. Either way, now you know not to make that mistake next time

Gift cards are the one thing I always get and keep the reciept for. Just in case they don’t work. Maybe he realized before he gave them.
I like to check the balance on cards before returning them to customers as a bit of a failsafe. Reassures the customers and puts my mind at ease for these situations
