Hey, everyone! I've been self-studying Chinese for about 10 months using apps and online sources, and (trying to) practice my handwriting along the way.

I saw some nice progress at first, but lately I feel like it has become a little sloppy; I might have hit a wall or even regressed a bit. I really don't want to form bad habits.

Could you please give me your sincere opinion and point out what I might be doing wrong? What looks good and what doesn't? I'd love to know what I should focus on to keep improving. And please don't mind, there are just a few random sentences and words in the picture.

All feedback is very welcome.

Thank you!

  • OMG you have really good handwriting! You totally nailed it!

I appreciate the encouragement! I'm still a beginner, so that means a lot to me. 谢谢你!

  • Humble brag? Your writing is excellent.

One small issue: the last stroke on characters like 么去公 is not vertical. They need some angle.

  • very good balance generally, would say that your fine motor movements could be clearer on 也心么五百 etc

Thanks so much for your reply, can you try to explain for me what you mean by "clearer fine motor movements"? English is not my first language, so I feel a bit lost in translation. Is it about the awkward hooks and trembling horizontal lines 🥲? Do you have any practice tips to correct and improve those?

(I really think 心 is the most difficult hanzi to write in the world, i have never written a single one that made me satisfied. Or two that looked similar 😂)

Not that guy but yea, the hook and the vertical line after it are a bit awkward, the hook and line should not touch.

For 心, it depends on the font but generally, the middle bottom part of 心 should be sloping to the side, and yours is sloping downward too much and too fast. Put it in angle term, your is about a 45 degree downward, while it should be like a 10 degree.

I also picked up on some of your 力 are a bit off. The first stroke (horizontal vertical hook) should be 1 stroke, and I can see that you are inconsistent with it. Example the 努力, both "力” have a break between the horizontal and vertical stroke, as if you are written it in 2 strokes, but in earlier line with the character"别” in 特别, the 力 in it is correct.

That being said, your handwriting is very good and tbh, better than a big chunk of the native speaker (I could say me included 😂). All those critics are mostly just us nitpicking at some minor details that you can improve on.

  • Your writing looks better than most native speakers

  • Please tell me it’s the pencil, right? I really like your writing

I use the standard pink pentel 0.5 that is in the picture, I don't feel confident enough to use a pen yet. I like it a lot, and for me, it feels more stable than using a pencil (which I like too, but I have to sharpen it a lot, otherwise the writing feels 'thick'). Thanks for your sweet reply!

  • very legible and clean, good job :)

  • Really good handwriting ✨✨💪🏻

  • Gtfo I’ve been trying to make my Chinese writing not ugly for decades and somehow you’re doing better than me 10 months in

  • Your handwriting is very clear. But there is always room for improvement. For example, your 心 looks unbalanced.

When writing 汉字, we need to keep in mind the highest and lowest points, as well as far left and far right points of the character. Also need to pay attention to the direction and angle of each stroke.

I am a native Japanese speaker, and have been writing 漢字 for a several decades. I think my handwriting is clear and ok, but I have not taken a brush or pen calligraphy to learn how to improve it when I was growing up in Japan.

Handwriting is a skill that requires many many years to practice, and having a good teacher who can point out what to look for is very important to start with.

Personally, this Youtube channel has been really helpful for me. She explains what to pay attention to, and what mistakes to avoid. For example, she explains how to write 心 here. I feel my handwriting has improved. At least, I am learning what to look for.

I usually practice only 2~3 characters for a few days until I feel I feel comfortable with them. Only then do I move on to other characters. I use 18x18m 米字格. I think 15x15mm or larger 米字格 or 田字格 works well.

If you don't have a copybook, I recommend getting one. I bought 田英章 楷书入门 and 吴玉生's books from AliExpress. r/Chinese_handwriting also has lots of info on how to practice . They also have a community library of good copybooks in pdf format.
