lián hé guó nà biān zěn me shuō?

联 (lián²) 合 (hé²) 国 (guó²) 那 (nà⁴) 边 (biān¹) 怎 (zěn³) 么 (me・) 说 (shuō¹)

Translation here:

What does the United Nations say (about something)?

This is a sarcastic retort to some boring news. There are always some newspapers that report boring or useless or unnecessary news, wasting the precious online resources. So, we say that sentence above as a way to mock those trivial contents, implying that the topic is so unimportant that not even the UN would care about it.

For example:

“Recently, a man had a bowl of noodles for his breakfast, and then he felt not hungry.”

“Mom and kid are crying together because the kid hasn’t finished his homework. And Dad finds it so hilarious that he records it and uploads it to Douyin.”

Anyway, these are such fucking stupid pieces of news, and such news is always packaged as overly formal reports or short videos. It’s not worth our time reading or watching. Those so-called official newspapers churn out news just for the sake of it, and most of them are short-videos accounts. But we still end up seeing them on platforms like Tiktok, X, as well as some newspapers.

So, when it comes to that kind of news, we would say : What does the United Nations say about it? Why don’t you just report it to the UN and see what will they react to it?

Example sentences:

A: I’ve just got a job with a salary higher than yours, Hahahaha.

B: anyway, what does the United Nations say?

A: I’m gonna be married to her\him.

B: what does the United Nations say?

A: You know what? I just passed the postgraduate exam.

B: well, congratulation. But what does the United Nations say?

There is an another way to say it:

Does the UN know of it?

  • Just wondering, what is the difference between 那里and那边?

In most of the cases there is no difference between them.

But if you deeply dive into the tiny difference here, 那边 emphases more on direction, like west and east, it may not be a exact point and is always used with a hand gesture. But 那里 indicates a more certain place.

那边 can also refer to abstract "sides" : 我和那边的负责人见面。(那边 in this sentence means "负责人manager" belongs to a different company, department or a team.)

  • It's not a fixed phrase.  Just being sarcastic on the belief that 联合国 is something that sounds super important but in fact has absolutely no say in anything (nowadays).

So basically it implies that "ok I'm gonna pretend to make you feel that this is important, but nobody actually gives a sh*t"

wtf, this is the most hilarious comment bro 🤣🤣
