Hi All, link me if this question has been asked before but I am leaving in one day on a trip to Japan for one month, and my plan was to go to China afterwards. However, I messed up my timing and my online application has yet to pass preliminary review for the San Francisco consulate, and I won't be able to make an appointment with my passport. I am wondering if there is a way, since I will be in Japan for 1 month, to apply for my visa while I am there? I have no legal status in Japan and am there as a tourist, but I know there are consulates in major cities like Tokyo and Sapporo. Alternatively, I plan to spend the Lunar New Year in HK so could I possibly grab and expedited visa from a consulate there? Please let me know if any of this is possible or if I am SOL and should change my trip post-Japan to a visa-free country.
Edit: After doing a bit of digging I found out about the TWOV resetting with Hong Kong. Let me know if this is a valid Itinerary:
Japan(1 month) > Beijing (5 Days) > Hong Kong (4 Days) > Guangzhou, Chongqing, Chengdu (9 Days) > 3rd Country (Likely South Korea)
Your japanese entry stamp should be proof of legal stay.
The fees page on the CoVA site in Japan lists a fee for Americans

Thanks for your post, yerdslerd! It seems like your post is about a TWOV (Transit Without Visa) Program. This is one of the most frequently asked questions. Please take a look at the following quick references: (1) Wikipedia has great and thorough article on the 240 Hour Transit Program (2) /u/DoubleNo2902 did a great job of providing a guide for the 144 HR TWOV HND > CAN > HKG with a ton of useful information.

What's SOL?
Shit Out of Luck ;-)
Why not type it out?
Typing 3 letters is quicker than 13. Same as using ASAP, LOL,SNAFU, etc
Why not abbreviate everything then?
What would be nice is instead of complaining about my commonly used abbreviation, you helped answer my question. Thank you
No and not all of us are septics.
STFU….
Based on your edit, that'll work fine, no visa needed.
