Can I travel on 240 hour visa free program from Hong Kong West Kawloon to Guangzhou by train? I’d have onward ticket to Manila. It’s quite confusing to me as it appears that by train I can only go to Shenzhen but not Guangzhou?

  • Thanks for your post, tellmemore987! It seems like your post is about a TWOV (Transit Without Visa) Program. This is one of the most frequently asked questions. Please take a look at the following quick references: (1) Wikipedia has great and thorough article on the 240 Hour Transit Program (2) /u/DoubleNo2902 did a great job of providing a guide for the 144 HR TWOV HND > CAN > HKG with a ton of useful information.

  • It's not the visa-free program – you even used the right tag: Transit Without a Visa (TWOV)... Not the same thing...

As usual for a visa-related question, you do not mention the MOST IMPORTANT part: your citizenship. Making it impossible to say whether you are eligible or not.

by train I can only go to Shenzhen

Lol no. And Immigration for Mainland China is done at Kowloon station, one floor down from HK Immigration. After that, you can go anywhere, almost. So this could work, but IF your citizenship is eligible...

Thank you for your response. I hold Czech citizenship

Which is why it was really important to mention your citizenship: Czech citizens are NOT visa-free, but eligible for TWOV. So this works. Just don't go and call it visa-free.

Ok, thank you so much for the help!!

  • Yes, since November 2025 this is an allowed method of entry for TWOV. The immigration inspection (both HK exit and mainland entry) happens at West Kowloon, so once through you can take a train going anywhere: Shenzhen, Guangzhou, even Beijing.

Nice, thank you for the response!
