Hey everyone im 17, started my vocational training 4 months ago where i work in an actual kitchen as a kitchen assistant, while also going to school. I recently sliced my hand open and then fainted. If you saw a student (who by the way already messes up kinda a lot) do this, would you label them as incompetent or stupid in your head? I havent been to work since, im scared to go back and have the chefs thinking im actually incapable. (English is my second language sorry for bad spelling)

  • You’re 17. Every single chef has cut themselves. Every chef makes mistakes every day. It’s about how you recover and how you present the final dish. Keep cooking.

    Will I think you're stupid? No. I'd need other signs. Would I think you're incompetent. Well, yes, you're 17 and don't know shit. But it would be my job to change that.

  • This happens to every chef if they tell you they never cut themselves they are liars. Use it as a learning experience and if you still feel embarrassed at work just talk to your check about it. I would rather have someone speak to me about it rather than have that affect them or their work because at the end of the day it doesn't matter.

  • Every chef makes that mistake at least a few dozen times, brush it off, you got this!

  • Dude, I’m 36 and destroyed my thumb making drinks for friends and family 2 weeks ago. Had to really dig deep to stay conscious. It’s happened to everyone who’s worked with knives for an extended period of time. You’ve earner your first battlescar, now get back on the horse and stop hiding.

  • My fist hot shift at my first nice place I was scraping the plancha and shot hot grease all over my hands. They were gnarly burns. Instead of checking on me the sous just laughed and made fun of me.

    Failure is a wise teacher. Learn from it and move on!

    Everyone fucks up. I haven't cut myself in a decade but we all do it in the beginning. Each cut will be a lesson you won't forget. Hopefully, a mistake you will only make once.
