I have Verizon and am planning on dropping them due to cost ($85+ per month). What do y’all recommend for use around Charlottesville and the occasional national trip (almost always to big city type areas- DC, Richmond, NYC, etc).
My goal is to reduce cost and not sacrifice cell coverage.
Thanks in advance?
Visible. Verizon network at 1/3 the cost.
This 100%. I switched years ago, and it’s great.
Deprioritization too. I had Visible and data sucked in the city.
If you use allot of data, Verizon is the only way to fly. Visible is throttled badly all over Cville and Albemarle
I've had Mint Mobile for several years now and have been pleased with it, I particularly like the hotspot option.
Same! Never had an issue with mint in town and unlimited is $30/mo. It amazes me people still pay for AT&T, Verizon, etc.
Same. I pay $220 for six months at a time.
This is an MVNO for tmobile.
Had Mint for years. Good to go. Used in North America, (Europe and Asia (International calling plans)).
Bonus - Christmas cards from Ryan Reynolds every year. He's such a sweet guy.
Ting if you're a home Internet customer. $10/mo. for unlimited, Verizon network.
Ting sucked for me in the city.
Ting has never let me down in all parts of the country.
I've had a great experience with Google Fi! Way cheaper than Verizon, and I can't remember a single dropped call since switching a few years ago.
We switched to Google fi a few months ago and it has been great for us. They also let you trial it for a week to make sure it has coverage where you'll use it, which is very convenient.
xfinity mobile if you have home internet... $20 unlimited line.
I use US Mobile. They give you the option of having any of the big 3 as the backend service with priority data and you can switch between them if you're going to be somewhere where one of the others has better coverage. They also have the option for $10/mo of having a second number on one of the other backends and your phone will switch to the secondary if you lose signal on the primary. I use AT&T as my primary as it's usually better where I'm at most of the time and have a second line on Verizon for when I'm in rural areas. I'm paying $45/mo with unlimited data which is less than half of what I what I was paying Verizon with limited data.
Ditto.
I've had US Mobile for the last two years and haven't had any issue at all. I pay the yearly for their Darkstar.
I just switched back to US Mobile, using AT&T'S network on their premium plan, and it has been excellent in the C'ville area. I live in the Valley but work in C'ville, and it's been rock solid. I also added the Verizon network as a secondary network, just in case, but I haven't needed to use it yet. Also, the priority data has been excellent, even in crowded areas. Where I live and work, the Verizon signal isn't as good, so that ruled out Visible for me.
I have an unlocked phone and use Mint Mobile. Great service with hotspot. Plans start at $15 a month. They have free roaming service in Canada and international passes for travel to other countries.
Google fi. Works all over town
Ting Mobile is $10/month, plus $5/gig.

Ting Mobile is $10/month, plus $5/gig. Not true. I pay the $10 plus $5 monthly for years and don’t have their internet.
I have lines on both Tmobile and Verizon currently and had ATT previously. I'm super happy with Tmobiles coverage. It's better than both Verizon or ATT.
I had a friend who couldn’t get T-Mobile service in her apartment in the development area of the county. I don’t know if it’s gotten better nowadays, but she did have to switch.
I like Google fi :)
We switched to Xfinity Mobile (MNVO Verizon)years ago. Granted it’s coupled with an Xfinity service, but the price point is amazing and You would be surprised at the number of business that have Xfinity WiFi.
I've had no issues with T-Mobile. Had it before moving to C'ville, so anything cheaper using the T-mobile towers should be fine.
