I just finished the second episode of season three for Jujutsu Kaisen and have quite a few mixed feelings about it and didn’t know exactly how to express my opinion until I thought about it. And overall, It feels a bit clunky.

The animation itself in the season is undoubtedly great. Im not making an argument that it’s bad, but I can’t help but feel like the direction of the show isn’t serving really any purpose besides to confuse and disorient.

From long awkward pauses, such as Yuta being on top of Itadori for entirely way too long, to just really weird moments of unnecessary dialogue tied with weird shots. Like Yuta chasing Itadori as thier fight first begins. Yuji saying something along the lines of, “He’s this fast with a drawn sword?” Despite the two’s actual movement appearing relatively slow.

The repeating walk of the stairs was another moment that I believe they intended to be artistic, but it just came off as pointless to me. It could be likened to themes of repetition or perhaps perseverance, but I can’t help but feel like that could have been portrayed in much better ways.

Some parts of the episodes are portrayed fantastically though, such as the reading of Naobito’s Will, many of the still shots, such as the stair scene (before the walking down). Yuta and Rikas introduction. And the beginning of Choso vs Naoya.

I am expecting this to be an unpopular opinion, but overall I can’t say I am the biggest fan of the direction this is going. I thought the opening and endings were more the vibes they were attempting to portray, but I can’t say I feel they have done that aesthetic any justice.

I hope I feel better about the rest of the season.

  • Well these two were made for the movie so they’ll definitely be a little more artistic, but also there’s like 2 episodes that’ve been out for a day and imo that’s waaay too early to form any kind of opinion about the season as a whole

I disagree. I just finished episode 2 right now and immediately came to reddit to see if people felt the same way as me and OP nailed it. The animation was amazing, but the editing felt clunky. Fast shots to then slow shots with deliberate and slow animation, weird cuts. It didn't feel coherent at all.

AND it feels extremely disjointed story wise. Me and my partner are like "wtf is going on" its mentioning a bunch of random shit that luckily I have an idea of because I know manga spoilers, but she has no clue and is overwhelmed. The whole zen'in clan thing is so random.

I dont know, the pace feels way too fast.

I mean you’re not really disagreeing with me, I’m just saying it’s impossible to judge the season off of 2 episodes which were designed to come out in theaters first. I didn’t really have the same problems you did either but that depends on the person I guess

I guess I kind of assumed that as both the first two episodes and a movie they would be setting the expectation for the rest of the season. Sure I can’t make a concrete opinion about the entire season now, but I think it’s sensible to be cautious of the things they purposely show us.

  • Like the other comment said, the episodes were probably flashier than usual to be included with the movie. But I do think the show is chasing sakuga so much that it's hard to tell what's happening at times. The Mahoraga fight is a big example of this

  • imo it doesn’t fit the vibe of the arc that it’s adapting at all, except for maki mini arc

  • The stairs part really had me thinking of Jojo and just that repeating running up the same stairs

  • I like the bit “artsy” approach to it. It’s not overshadowing the story but just gives it a cool twist and unique look. It is looking alot different compared to season 1 and 2, but in a cool “eye catching” way. And IMO I feel like the animators went all in on the animation and that’s what makes it look so crisp and sweet. I’m a fan of the first 2 seasons and I’m definitely a fan of season 3 so far.

    Yes. So much yes.

  • i loved s1, but s2 was simply far too depressing for me even though i finished it. should i even try s3?

Season 3 as a whole won't be as depressing as 2 but it does have its moments. When it does go there it gets really sad

You should cuz it’s made by mappa? I’m sure 1 episode will have enough content to satisfy you especially if you watched something like one punch man season 3.

1 episode of jujutsu season 3 is gonna have more animation then the entire season of OPM >.>

Yes, try for yourself, don't let others opinions decide for you

  • The first two episodes were sick

Too disjointed in my opinion. Getting instantly to action seems cool on paper, but its hard to get sucked back into the story after such a long wait for this season.

How did you felt about the amount of action in S2/Shibuya?

Because the flashy fights only increase as the manga goes on and story takes a lot of setback.

Season 2 had a lot of build up with hidden inventory and shibuya arc was eased into slowly, explaining everything.

Episode 1 in season 3, coming off the back of s2 finale was just...incoherent attempt to be smart showing future events, zen'nin bro randomly introduced, teleported to yuji, epic fight, then "by the way, there's culling games happening...for reasons", cut to, they're visiting tengen. My partner said shes dropping it because its too disjointed and can't get back into it.

Disjointed. Its just an editing choice movies do that stuff all the time.

Culling game is a result of the events at the end of season 2.

Its defiantly a prefrence thing but i done think it was incoherent

basically zenin boss is dead so they discussed the rights to his will, (they clearly a bunch of asswholes who don't like each-other).

Unfortunatly for them cos gojo died the will basically said megumi is now getting all the property rights so they go off to assassinate him, symiultsnously yuji is there to assassinate the MC (well pretend to) ( i mean im terrible with names so bare with me) because hes now the target of assassinations because Gojo is dead and well people don't want skunas vessel around.

They are doing the games because they will loose there powers if they don’t.

Basicly end of season 2 gives him the power to force people into the games inorder to force there evolution. And their are consiquences to not doing that.

Sure its not the full explantion for the games but at the end of the day its a plot device because he won the last season the heros need to band together to stop his plan but follow his rules, and defeat the spreading curses.

Who is doing the games, how do they lose their power? Who gets the power to force people into the games? It all just sprung up.

Its a shitty plot device that doesn't fit in with how s1 and s2 progressed. The culling games rules popped up on a 10 second slide....thats not story telling, thats just saying "aight next arc to force fights"

Who is doing the games, how do they lose their power? Who gets the power to force people into the games? its all the same person, kenjaku basically took the abilities Mahito (who has soul manipulation abilities when he reached his peak form at the end of season 2 he) because he's the one controlling Suguru Geto (who as we know can consume curse spirits)

he forced people by trance forming their spirits to activate their dormant sorcerer abilities that he had implanted over the years (hes a 1000 year old sorcerer dude he did Manny experiments over the years) this was basically what happened at the end of season 2.

sure season 2 was a little convoluted, but it essentially boils down to 1000-year-old dude, turned dead people into curse objects, And though the powers of curse manipulation and soul transfiguration he got in season 2 he was able to activate those people and awaken dormant curse abilties, manipulating women into giving birth to people with curse abilities and then those people are forced to fight/participate or die at his command so they can transcend those abilities, (basically allowing him to take over the world with the ones who remain).

Kenjaku has power over ALL jujutsu sorcerers???? This has never been explained...I get the death paintings, but there's only 10 of them including Yuji...how are the other sorcerers involved in that..

Maybe watch the show and let it answer for you?

You will get a lot more explained in the upcoming epsidoes but Kenjaku turned a bunch of ancient sorcerers into cursed objects then implated them in a bunch of random people. These people are kinda like Yuji except the original person doesn't have control over their bodies.

He also marked a bunch of regular people who had the potential to become sorcerers and allowed them to, well become sorcerers.

Then he made a bunch of barriers that encourge these people to fight each other.

They arn't all forced, like megumi for example, but I'm sure more will be explained as it goes on.

Because it was adapted from the manga, that's how it went in the manga

✌🏾deuces. Dropping something by season 3 because the first two episodes took an artistic approach - while simultaneously trying to build mystery and expand the universe - is wild.

Without knowing the manga, I think this season has successfully ratcheted up the feeling of tension and uncertainty, which makes sense in the aftermath of what happened in Shibuya. There’s reverberating consequences to Gojo being sealed AND the launch of the culling games. Factions and factors, both new and old, are suddenly thrust into the spotlight in a way that isn’t spoon fed to you.

I’m excited to see it unfold. I doubt your gf will actually follow through with dropping it - let us know if she does. Feels like it’d be her loss if she’s enjoyed it this far

  • The entire animation style has definitely changed into something I notice to how fighting games would have the fighters post up in a tight confrontation with a long-drawn-out talking or staring at each other. you know what I mean, its just JJK is now like a mix of scenes made for fighting games plus lots of a quick fighting scenes, the few moments of story is nice but we know what they are doing.

  • Completely agree

  • I love artsy stuff that's just there because cool shot. So this is basically everything I want in my anime.

I love artsy stuff too, I don’t think this is artsy, I think it’s awkward.

I like awkward stuff too. To me the two episodes so far feels like a mini arc focusing on yuji and its horror coded. Especially right now that works for me, because yuji is exhausted and dreads every moment of the story.

We'll probably shift back into an early season 2 like tone for the rest of the season. Up until probably Megumi getting possessed.

  • I have 0 clue wtf is going on and am completely lost. I think I am going to stop watching it.

  • I'm mixed on it. I liked that generally they were trying something different. I enjoyed a lot of the stillness, for example, and the relative lack of dialogue especially for Yuji. Shows how broken this poor boy is.

    - The stairs repeating shots seemed to indicate the long road ahead for Yuji -- it's just setback after setback. But the editing was a little strange in that the pattern was broken -- each progressive shot had Yuji essentially starting further and further up in the frame...until the last one brought his feet closer to the middle of the frame again.

    - There's a super quick cut between Yuji and Yuta when they're chatting at the fire, which might have worked had it been a recurring choice. But it was just a one off, so it threw off the rhythm of the scene and didn't serve the character work.

I'm glad JJK is back, and I'm excited for the rest of the season. I appreciate the directors trying new stuff, and I'll see whether the cinematic language coheres for me. Maybe a 7.5/10 so far.

  • The directing looks too much bakemonogatari-ish.

Is that bad? I really like how the movie is animated.

  • Just knowing how it ends and what that final arc is i'm not touching jjk. so much potential turned into an all time fumble

  • They looked slow to u so that its easy for us viewers to see them running lol.

Idk hanrei-legend, personally I think it would be meaningful better if they were animated as loose streaks of light (they’re moving at around Mach 1 considering Yuji doesn’t get stronger during the games and he’s relative to Mach 3 Maki) to keep it canonical of course

I know I shouldn't be nitpicking, especially when it doesn't matter anyway, but Maki isn't Mach 3. She can use precognition to keep up with someone who is. Even running at Mach 1 is a stretch, since that would mean Yuji is running as fast as Naoya... and we saw how that fight went lol.

The streaks of lights are so played out and overused. Huge cop-out for animation. I'm sick of them.

Other animes have portrayed that a lot better in my opinion
