Alright, I am a minor in an atheist only (to my knowledge) family. I have never been to mass nor have been confirmed in the Church. I have been baptized as an infant, however. I'm pretty sure my family knows I believe in God and that I am a Christian, and yesterday I told my Mom I am interested in Catholicism and want to go to Church sometime.

So, I have never asked to go exactly to Mass before. I'm not going to lie, it was mainly out of shame of associating with religious things, and by extent, God Himself. For example, if I were praying at my desk visibly, and I heard my dad coming upstairs, I'm not sure if I would keep that posture or keep praying out of shame for being seen. It feels horrible sometimes. I believe I am doing way better now in that regard, though.

I want to ask, have I been violating the commandment to go to Sunday Mass by not asking? I know it is hard to tell because no one here really knows me, but is there any cut-out rule that would enlighten me on this? I would appreciate any help. Since I just told my mom I am interested in Catholicism yesterday, should I wait a week, or something? I'm not sure. I just need advice.

  • Bless you, reading this has brought me joy and so happy that you found Jesus and are a believer. You must feel his presence.

Not sure how old you are, but as a minor you are in no way violating commandments. I am glad that you have told your mom. Hopefully she will take you. Or, do you have a church within walking distance? Maybe you can even get her to go in with you.

Prayers for you as you seek the Lord.

  • Follow your intuition aka listen for God, but respect they parents. Meaning don’t turn your father’s house into a house of war. Do what you can, but yes, ask God to borrow St Michael’s the ArchAngels Armor and have some honest conversations and go from there.

  • Press forward lovingly, with kindness and respect.

  • Were you baptized Catholic? At some point, it’s reasonable to express interest in participating in your own church, even by yourself. This partly depends on age.

Ask if you can go to mass on Christmas perhaps. It’s a large crowd, lots of visitors so you’ll blend in.

  • You state you are a minor, which means you aren't violating your Sunday obligation by not going, because as a minor, you are still dependent on your parents to take you to mass. The Sunday Obligation recognises that their are cases where individuals are unable to go to mass for reasons outside their control, which seems to be your case. It does depend on your age, a 17yo is much more able to go to mass themselves than someone younger. But, even then, you are still dependent on your parents, and if your nearest Church is far away that would make it dangerous to go yourself, you wouldn't be culpable.
