Ave Maria! I have recently been learning about Our Lady of Kibeho, the only currently recognized apparition of Our Lady in Africa. I’d love to learn about your favorite lesser known Marian apparitions. God Bless!
For those who don’t know about Our Lady of Kibeho: There were a series of apparitions to at least three people (and several others who claimed to see her) in Kibeho, Rwanda from 1981-89. She spoke messages of the importance of service, sincerity to God, repentance, and taught one of the girls (Marie Claire Mukangango) the Rosary of the Seven Sorrows, asking her to spread the devotion throughout the world. Three different girls reported seeing visions of bloody conflict and violence. Many interpret these visions as warning signs before the impending genocide years later.
Our Lady of Kibeho is at the heart of Catholicism in Rwanda and throughout Africa. Let us pray for our brothers and sisters who suffer oppression and violence for their faith and love for Christ. Ave Maria.

Our Lady of China! Even amongst Chinese Catholics I find that this veneration is not that popular.

Special shout-out to Our Lady of La Vang. I never heard of Our Lady of La Vang until I moved to Seattle, which has a large Viet community. Now I see her everywhere.
I have a painting of Our Lady of China in my living room!
It's because Our Lady of Sheshan is a a more popular veneration among Chinese Catholics. Maybe it's because Shanghai is a big city.
Ohh Im Chinese and haven’t heard of this
You will.
I think I recognize the painting! Very beautiful.
Yes, one of my favorites, too!
there is also our lady of velankanni
Our Lady of Prompt Succor as the patron of New Orleans and Louisiana. Brought to Louisiana by French nuns, prayers to OLPS saved the convent and parts of the city from two fires. The relatively easy victory at the Battle of New Orleans by the Americans over the British was attributed to her intercession. Since 1815, the Ursuline Sisters sing a Mass of Thanksgiving on January 8, fulfilling the promise they made. Even on January 8, 2006, in a city still reeling from Hurricane Katrina, the chapel was full. Read more about this American devotion. https://www.shrineolps.com/history
I was educated at Ursuline Academy, the oldest continuously operating school for girls, and the oldest Catholic school, in the U.S. We will be celebrating our Tricentennial in 2027. The shrine is attached to the Academy.
That's my favorite too! I have spent so many hours in the dark in hurricane season praying for help.
Our Lady of Champion is one state away from me and i really want to visit the shrine. Also its the only approved one in the US!
My aunt visited the shrine this past summer. Definitely want to visit (it’s fairly closer to me lol). My sister even found cute Our Lady of Champion rag dolls on Etsy she wants to buy for her girls
It’s on my bucket list to visit!
Never knew this!!
I love her so much.
does our lady of akita count as lesser known?
I literally just learned about her last week!
I love that Our Lady appears to people as their race. She truly is mother to us all!!
Our Lady of the Pillar was the first Marian apparition in 40 when she appeared to the apostle James, son of Zebedee, in Spain.
Our Lady of Walsingham used to be the most famous aparition but after the reformation it is not well known even in the UK; most people probably only recognise it because it is the name of the British anglican personal ordinariate.
Our Lady of Cuapa in Nicaragua in 1980 urged daily recitation of the rosary with scripture readings for peace and conversion.
Our Lady of Tears! Also her chapel is so so so powerful and precious
Wow! TIL! Thank you
Love this post. Our Lady of Kibeho pray for us.
Our Lady of Lavang in Vietnam!
Our Lady of the Revelation. A man named Bruno Cornacchiola had converted to Protestantism and planned to assassinate Pope Pius XII. He was ready to carry out his plan when the Virgin Mary appeared to him and his three children. He then afterward became Catholic and a devout until his death. He met Pius XII to ask for his forgiveness.
It’s very fascinating and one of my favorite Marian apparitions :
Our Lady who appeared to the man who wanted to assassinate the Pope
Our Lady of Prompt Succor, mentioned not by name in the White House's proclamation on The Feast of the Immaculate Conception. She has saved New Orleans many times; first time was a fire in the French Quarter. Most well know is Her intercession during the Battle of New Orleans. Andrew Jackson, a Freemason, asked the Ursuline Sisters to pray to Her before the Battle - and after, acknowledged Her help!

our lady of revelation, appeared in rome to a protestant communist in 1947
One of the lesser known and approved apparitions that I like is of Our Lady of Laus (France). The Vicar General didn't believe in the apparitions, and the Blessed Virgin reportedly told the seer to tell him: "Tell the Vicar General that he can very well make God come down from Heaven by the power he received when he became a priest, but he has no commands to give the Mother of God."
danggggg savage 😂
Imaculee Ilibagiza wrote a book on Our Lady of Kibeho that I found informative.

Yes! I am planning on reading it.
does Our Lady’s appearance to Marie-Alphonse Ratisbonne count? i’ve heard her called Our Lady of the Miracle or Our Lady of Zion.
I think so! I love how much Our Lord used His Mother to help us find our way home to Him.
me too!!
Not sure if Zeitun counts but always found it compelling that she appeared to thousands of Muslims like Gamal Nasser and undoubtedly produced many conversions
Coptics
The Our Lady of Fátima apparition is prob top 3 apparitions but bc i am portuguese i have to pick that one
Our Lady of Cuapa has always stood out to me, prophesied of future troubles in Nicaragua and a third world war. Was also predicted to happen some century before hand.
Akita I also like, though it's more well known, what's less known is the vision of the Virgin of Akita that Teresa Chun saw when she was in a vegetative state with an inoperable brain tumor, after which she was cured.
Also the apparitions at Chandavila, Spain, were approved over a year ago, and it's left quite an impression on me for some reason, despite it's simplicity.
I am reading now that Cuapa is only recognised by a local bishop. I personally do not like dooms thinking “If you don’t pray 3WW will come”.
Isn’t our Lady of Zeitoun also in Africa? Or do you mean the interior continent?
Has the apparition been approved by the Church or have they just let the Coptic Orthodox Church rule on it?
Oh I’m not sure actually, good point. I think it was approved but honestly don’t know.
Our Lady of Ngome, the Tabernacle Most High in South Africa.
While not officially confirmed as supernatural by the Vatican, the local diocese permits and supports the veneration and pilgrimage to the shrine.
the most important painting in Poland: black madonna: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Madonna
Jimmy Akin has a really good video on Our Lady of Kibeho. It does include a very sad and upsetting reading of the girl's vision of the incoming genocide. So viewers beware.
Our Lady of Soufanieh, Damascus, Syria
I can read the Latin. What the top language?
It means Mother of the Word in a Bantu language called Kinyarwanda.
Why am I getting downvoted? I don’t speak Bantu.
Is it not weird that she would appear the same ethnicity as those who see her, wherever around the world? From Guadalupe to Zeitoun to China, she’s evidently depicted ethnically similar to those reporting the sighting?
When Jesus was on the cross he instructed Mary to become the mother to us all. I think it's understandable that she would appear to everyone with features that look familiar to them
i dont find it weird at all. it makes sense
why?
For me it’s very weird
What is weird? It is old Catholic artistic tradition.
It’s weird to me, especially since Mary & Jesus are supposed to be universally known by their appearances & contradicts the fact that Jesus was born in Bethlehem
Don’t you think it’s lovely that Mary and Jesus appear in a familiar way to believers, as a reflection of themselves?
What do you mean with 'universally known by their appearances'?
The one in Wisconsin I can’t recall the name of
Ah. Our Lady of Champion.
