Spotted on a pack of biscuits in Dunnes the other day and on a post I just saw of a box in of kellogs cereal

  • I wish I'd paid more attention now but there was a feature on RTÉ last week about Micheál Martin's visit to China. One of the many industry people who went with him was talking about some cocoa substitute they use that is far cheaper but produces the same taste.

And those savings will be passed on to the consumer, right....?

Saw this too. Essentially, because companies have shrank their product and risen the price to extremes, they are now going to enect a shitification of ingredients to squeeze even more value for shareholders. I was a big chocolate eater, not any more. Its all cheap rubbish.

Yeh if I'm going to pay that I'm just going to go to Leonidas or the Milk Market in Limerick city and buy something where they are making it from scratch. Shareholder capitalism is hollowing out everything.

Theres a guy in kerry that makes exceptional chocolate, name is benoit lorgue, his stuff might be in some high end store. Its expensive but you really get what you pay for

Not heard of him but this is exactly both the things I would seek out and also what will eventually make me diabetic! Thanks!

They’re too pricey and good to gorge, you need to stop and savoreach one like you in a tv ad. I can check my local supermarket to list the rest of the independent chocolatiers they have. I know theres chocolate by judith in waterford. Skellige chocolate, but you might just have a easier time searching for local chocolatiers online and see what pops up.

    "The consumers????.......let them eat Choco"

    Probably

It has been this way for a long time, replacing milk with palm oil. Thankfully I love really dark chocolate, with minimal other stuff so quality hasn’t decreased as much.

It's called "mocklate", it's gonna be huge

  • A lot of them now say 'Chocolate flavoured' also.

Chocolate flavoured means there's chocolate in it. Chocolate flavour means no chocolate

  • It's an absolute fucking disgrace

  • My mam has just told me most Easter eggs contain palm oil now and won't even melt if you were to put it in a pan. Waxy shite. The only ones that don't are toblerone, Tony's Chocoloney and Butlers apparently.

Definitely, tried to use Cadbury eggs last year in baking & they wouldn’t melt. No matter how hot or how long I heated them there were horrible waxy lumps in it. I had to throw the whole lot away

There’s something really disturbing about that.

Aldi's Moser Roth brand doesn't use palm oil

You can add Cleeves to the list. They use no palm oil.

What’s the story with Cleeve’s? Does it have any link to the original company? Are they actually making stuff in Limerick?

Be handy if there was somewhere to see the palm oil free Easter eggs listed.

I don't eat Easter eggs anymore because of how poor quality they are lol, so this doesn't surprise me.
