It’s a remote enough beach, would pretty much only arrive by car… take it home, return it for DRS, dump it in circke k when filling up…. No need for it

  • There's an element of scumbaggery here that's hard to fathom sometimes.

We really can not have nice places in this country without some ignorant bastards destroying it with no consequences

It's because the other half of society is so shy and afraid of confrontation. The Brits and church were overbearing so we became passive, then we got rid of them and as the generations went by some remained passive, and the others realised there was nothing actually keeping them in check.

That and we've emulated the me me me culture of the states.

I don't think it's new tbh. I'm around long enough for remember scumbaggery in the early 90s. I remember when I was a kid living in a new housing development in Dublin, quite a nice one, and 'local teens' ripped out every newly planted tree all the bedded plants that the residents' association had spent months putting in and wrecked our playground. The only difference those days was the residents association tracked them down and turned up outside their parents' house to confront them verbally, calmly and very firmly and they were reported to the gardai and their schools etc. That would just never happen these days. They'd all give our about it online. However, it stopped it very fast.

There's a % of serious antisocial behaviour here (and actually it's similar in the UK btw) that is just utterly brazen and it goes largely unchallenged and people are increasing terrified.

  • Just driving home Sunday morning from work, you can see all the local takeaway bags thrown on the road, even in rural places.

    I have lost all hope.

This is not a new phenomenon. I worked in a takeaway in a large town 25 years ago. The town was like a skip every weekend. Dumping shit out of your car was way more common back then as well. The above is still unacceptable, but it has improved.

I discovered many years ago that I'm exactly 1 Big Mac Happy meal away from McDonald's.

Every Sunday morning, there's a few bags of rubbish that some badly reared scumbag threw out of their car because it would mess up their car so they wouldn't have to put them in the rubbish bin at home.

I worked in McDonald's in dun laoghaire in 1987ish and we had to do a litter patrol periodically, it was amazing how much rubbish was within 10 feet of a bin.

So anyone who makes a point that "more bins will sort the problem" are deluded.

And who expects a bin on a country road or remote beauty spot anyway?

more bins, and more policing will work.

it worked in my country. if you get a hefty fine for littering, you will think twice about dropping your rubbish.

then there is the "it takes a village to raise a child" and this is a big problem in Ireland. Nobody says anything. If you see a group of teenagers throw rubbish on the ground, will you act? not many would do, and that brings us to another problem. Kids are untouchable, and they know it. So if you do tell them, you are risking becoming a target of a conflict you can't win.

This is a never-ending vicious circle, that isn't going to be solved until we start changing the absolute basics of Irish Culture. And as a foreigner, that is absolutely not my call to do or even call for. All I can do is complain about it but accept it.

I was outside a garage with a bush, waiting for a puncture repair. A guy walks past with his friend and throws his coffee cup into the bush. I looked in and there was about 200 of the same coffee cups in the bush. It's unreal how people do it

Ya the dumped takeaways from a Saturday night is a infuriating one.

To be fair to Lennox's here in Midleton the staff go out and tidy up the street around them after they close up.

It was actually worse years ago. I remember a certain distance from town the sides of the road would be destroyed with takeaway bags fecked out of car windows as they finished eating. It really improved for a long time but the last few years it’s gone to hell again. Society has taken a turn with regards to behaviour. Littering, not using headphones to watch YouTube on the bus, general selfish behaviour.

As a bus driver, I am not allowed to listen to any music while driving. So I welcome teenagers that play music and hope they sit nearby so I can enjoy some entertainment.

must be a good music though :D

Yeah, even in the McDonald's car park with bins everywhere some people just leave a bag on the ground beside their car and drive off. It's disheartening seeing people fail at the most basic things to keep the country looking good

  • My local roads are getting destroyed recently... monster cans usually means a certain age bracket who can drive. Its usually at a dangerous bend in the road too to avoid being seen, so it makes it that much more difficult to pick up after. Like you'd almost prefer there was a giant skip every couple of miles with a target on it. Then at least they'd have their "fun" and all the rubbish ends up in the same spot.

Like what goes on in the mind of someone who thinks it's OK to just dump their rubbish in a beauty spot.

  • People can be right pricks! I recently visited home and couldn’t believe the amount of rubbish on the sides of roads. Have some fucking decency and respect and pick up your shit.

  • Cos people are lazy ignorant bastards

  • 15cent a can on the ground.

There is that but do you really want to handle these cans twice for <€1

    Yeah, I wouldn't either.

Not if they're imported Brit cans.

  • I love finding returnable cans. I’m happy to pick them up

  • Why do people come to enjoy a beautiful place just to leave shit at their arses. My local beach isn’t bad this time of year but once the weather improves it brings all the cunts with it. Drives me up the fucking wall, my mam walks the local woods as well as all the roads away from my house main and backroads all year collecting rubbish. The local litter warden brings her free bags and gloves and then collects what she gathers from our house.

Local litter warden is taking the piss I think.

No, the litter warden here is supporting someone who is caring for their environment.

They're fairly limited in what they can actually do. If you find a bag of domestic rubbish, leave it where it is and report it, they can, and will, go through it for addresses etc. If it has been moved, however, they can't go further with it as the person who tossed it was no longer the last one to handle it and it gets messy (no pun intended) for prosecution purposes.

Cameras require a lot of paperwork from higher-ups and are not as effective as people think.

My local litter warden will also collect bags that I or my neighbours have filled with litter washed ashore nearby or left in public spaces. Our former litter warden brought several people to court because she was excellent at her job but was unfortunately working under people who had no interest in supporting her.

Litter wardens are often also traffic wardens and parking violations are more lucrative for the council so are instructed to concentrate on that. It's a prioritisation issue further up the chain.

I report bags dumped through the See It, Say It app and the council always come and handle it pretty quickly

  • Is that near arklow? There's a lovely beach with rolling sand dunes in driving distance and from I can see many time groups of drinkers go there they leave everything there and toddle off. They go somewhere beautiful to relax and they're so thick and lazy that they make it less beautiful each time.

No it’s in Cork, but totally agree with you

  • Never seen a filthier country than Ireland, i know there must be loads but comparing to european ones its disgusting the amount of rubbish everywhere especially dublin.

Irish society has insane tolerance for dirty streets. Why is it so hard to add more bins/city cleaners + teach young kids in school?

Second that. Having spent a lot of time in Scandinavia, Ireland seems like an especially filthy place, on par with Britain.

It’s way filthier than the UK

I've been in dirtier, but not first world western country. It's a mentality. A large portion will do it if no one sees them doing it.

  • This stuff irks the shit out of me, last year a bunch of young teens were getting off the school bus and simply chucked all their tins on the path and walked off. Drives me dilly

  • 3/4 of those Monster cans are sugar free, one of those health conscious cunts I guess.

Swallowing sweeteners and aspartame isnt very health conscious that will give then dementia and other long term affects... which serves them right in the karma department...

  • Same happens on the back roads in Donegal always northern cans

  • I was literally just at bull island and I must have counted 6 or 7 used condoms and wrappers right next to park cars. It’s one thing riding in your car but for fuck sake, bring a bag or something.

  • 75c in your pocket mate, free money. But yes, this happens everywhere. We have polluted the moon. Its what humans do.

  • You should see my local park every weekday after school-lunch break is finished or every Saturday and Sunday mornings..

  • There’s gold in them thar cans.

  • Same on some woodland walks too.

  • We're a litter bug nation. Not helped by a public sector 'light touch' approach to waste management.

  • Typo “Scenes”

  • Most likely stoners pulling up for a joint I'd say if it's as out of the way as you say.

Even then most would keep the trash and bin it at home. These are definitely just scumbags but if you wanna get em just wait there at night until you see a car pull up and an ember being passed around. Then call the garda

  • A lot of people are just so disrespectful to areas they don't live in. I live in a popular seaside town and it is destroyed any busy day.

  • Also find (being from the north) the lack of bins in south has to contribute to the amount of littering

There has to be a personal responsibility also Ty be fair but hard to disagree

Oh yea 100% but hard to have an excuse with a bin (that fits more than a tin) all over the place, I can see the north going the same way unfortunately

  • We're constantly picking stuff up off the beach . Breaks my heart.

  • Selfish scum who know they will not suffer consequences for their shitty behaviour.

  • Genuinely the rubbish has been so much worse the past two weeks. I swear I'm not ignorant to it, it seems so bad the past month in particular

  • I was at Hore Abbey by rock of Cashel the other day out on a walk and there was an elderly lady (not frail but still elderly) going through picking up Bulmers and Monster cans littered around the place. (I did help then tried to walk back to carry the cans but she absolutely refused the help, told me to go enjoy the walk about, felt absolutely awful seeing her walking up through the mud carrying the litter)

  • When I walk my dog, we bring three bags: One for poop, one for trash, one for recycle.

I can't control other people's bad behavior, but I can follow this maxim: "Leave it better than you found it."

  • And yet "seems" almost worked! I thought you were just missing a comma or a full stop and another word or two. E.g. So disappointed to see, seems like this is weekly at the beach.

  • White Monster. Obviously some high class criminals.

  • Organise a clean up.

We do have a local one with Clean Coasts and the Schools have days also, but that’s not the point. If people stop being selfish dicks is more my point

  • Must be an AI image, the convoluted inconvenience that is the Re-turn scheme put a stop to this I thought.

🙄 Like having laws against murder put a stop to murder?

Sure what's the point in doing anything if you don't 100% eliminate the problem.

Jaysus that but that’s some nonsense. Someone had a bad night.
