What cosy and comforting shows and books are on your hibernation list?

  • Reading Blood Meridian by Cormac Mccarthy! Fucking insane book.... contemplating a sopranos re-watch....

A Sopranos rewatch is always the best idea

Ugh I don't want to be spamming sopranos quotes for the next few months tho hahaha another year of waiting is in order.... maybe ill watch true detective season 2 again which I would absolutely recommend!

True Detective after Season 1…whatever happened there?

Died on the vine or some shit

"The Kid and the gang went to the place, they killed everyone, then they went to the next place, they killed everyone there too. The sky was gorgeous, the Judge said some deep shit by the fire. Then they all went to the next place. They killed everyone."

Read it recently, I really enjoyed it but it was brutal.

I’m reading The Orchard Keeper atm.

  • Watching Heated Rivalry to avoid the FOMO. Reading Fools Errand by Robin Hobb. Both are great!!

HR is ridiculously good!! The first couple of EPs were hating with the semi explicit scenes, but none of it was as bad as other (hetero) shows. But the acting, production, and story are very compelling. I bawled at the ep with Kip and Scott!!

I sobbed at that too! Connor Storrie (Ilya) is also unreal. Hope he’ll do well off the back of HR

My mrs watched it and I got my first ride of 2026 out of it as a result. Mixed feelings. But might suggest we watch Brokeback Mountain this weekend.

Robin Hobb is absolutely spectacular, I’m just after starting my 3rd rereading the entire ROTE series at the moment.

Have you read The Farseer Trilogy?

Yes! Loved it. Enjoyed the Liveship Trilogy too but was happy to get back to Fitz!

  • Watching Pluribus and reading Brave New World. Take from that what you will

  • Reading At Least It Looks Good From Space by Carl Kinsella. Two essays in so far and I am loving it. (Re)watching House of The Dragon, and watching Twin Peaks for the first time. Twin Peaks is a trip and a half.

  • Listening to 11.22.63 by Stephen King, very captivating! Also watching Traitors UK and Daddy Issues. Would absolutely recommend Daddy Issues!

I read that when it came out. The part where he’s describing the high school play is some of his best writing I think, really evocative and moving.

I just finished 11/22/63 today! Loved it! I was not expecting the romance, it's written so well!

  • I'm reading Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir. It made a lot of lists last year so I'm excited to see how it goes

My favourite book of the past few years. New movie in March. I hope they do it justice, I’m a little concerned though

Such a pity they put everything in the trailer. A certain character should have been kept for the cinemas

It's so good!! I think I might have enjoyed it more than the Martian. I've read it a few more times for sure.

    I loved it too.

The audiobook is elite. Would highly recommend

Yeah the narration is fantastic, along with the sounds

Same here. Wouldn't be a usual genre for me but I'm 100 pages in and loving it! Have Piranesi by Susanna Clarke on standby for when I'm finished that

Really enjoyed it a few years back, might re read it this year

I just finished this recently and enjoyed it (a lot of the science stuff went totally over my head but I loved the characters in it). Can’t wait to see the film when it comes out

  • Got the 8 books in the seven sisters series over Christmas so starting that. And thw 18th dresden book is out round the 20th I think so looking forward to that

Enjoy. They're so good. You're in for a such a treat. The final one is my absolute favourite but all so good.

I got the 8th book in Tesco for a fiver and me and mam decided to grab the 1st 7 in a box set from amazon for us both to read.

And I've had the dresden files books preordered from amazon since the release date was... released

  • Decided to challenge myself and reading War and Peace, it’s bloody big

I tried that one years ago, I quit after about 300 pages.

Oh it's tough a tough read for the first few hundred pages trying to remember all the names.

Yeah I’m only about 130 pages in, and just trying to keep track of the various individuals

  • Finally getting around to reading "An Irish Atlantic rainforest".

  • Dungeon crawler Carl, only one chapter in 😆

I keep hearing good things about this. Enjoy

Oh enjoy!! I absolutely love these books. It’s not my usual genre at all so I was skeptical but I loved them. I’d highly recommend the audiobooks too!!

  • Reading a book called a waiter in Paris

Enjoying so far basically a story of this lad who can't find a job in London with a degree, moves over to France and blags his way into a french restaurant as a runner with 0 french

Would recommend find it interesting and funny as well

    It's very good!

  • Finished Run Away with James Nesbitt on Netflix last night. It was very good.

Usually anything with James Nesbitt is.

I thought it was very soapy tbh, dreadful dialogue in places

  • Going to start reading the Slow Horses series tonight. Loved the tv show and I’m told the books are better, so really looking forward to getting stuck into a new book series.

I’m hoping to read the books as well as loved the show

  • Reading The Compound by Aisling Rawle; very enjoyable read I must say

This is on my shortlist of next reads, pleased to see someone in the wild enjoying it!

Thanks, I picked it up by chance in the library and I'm really enjoying it. I used to be a great reader but I kind of fell out of the habit of it. I recently enjoyed Atmosphere too

  • Waiting for Dune #4 (God Emperor of Dune) to show up at a library so reading Cormac McCarthy’s The Orchard Keeper in between. It’s nice to take a reprieve from planet Arrakis.

Personally would recommend leaving Dune after Children. God Emperor is wacky.

Wackier than Leto II morphing into a worm?

Mistake me if I’m wrong, but god emperor is a whole book based on him being the worm! Like a thousand years after children

  • I’ve just started the Gael Song series by Shauna Lawless. I’m on the first one at the moment and it’s a very good read. It’s making me want to sit down and do a rewatch of The Last Kingdom.

I’m nearly finished watching The Good Karma Hospital on Netflix. It’s a cosy & fairly easy watch. My sister & brother in law recommended it as something similar to Call The Midwife but I wouldn’t say it’s as good as that.

  • Rereading Broken Harbour by Tana French who is one of my favourite authors. The book is set in North Dublin and it's about a murder of 3 family members and set during the crash.

I forgot that I love Tana French too and haven’t read this one!

This is actually my highest rated of this series. It’s a gripping if disturbing book. And one that’s stayed with me over the years

  • Started a rewatch of Game of Thrones.

  • Reading Listen to the Land Speak by Manchán Magan. Watched All of Is Strangers, now starting Kneecap.

  • Started the new Harlan Coben series on Netflix, Run Away. Struggling through it a bit, theres a lot going on and some of it is a bit stupid.

All the Coben series are formulaic and a bit stupid.

Agreed. I read a review of Harlan Coben series saying they ranged from bad to brutal. Run away was deemed bad ... Even though I’m a James Nesbitt fan, I certainly won’t watch another

  • Watching ‘Blue Lights’ on RTE Player and reading ‘Caravans’ by James Michener.

Blue Lights is class. 4th series coming out in the Autumn.

When is season three coming to Rte player I wonder? Loved the first 2 seasons

  • Watching 'Traitors' on BBC and currently working my way through the Shardlake series by CJ Sansom. Currently on Tombland. Fiction set during the time of Henry VIII, great easy reads where you learn a bit of history.

  • Reading Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami

Oh man, that book changed the way I think. So so good.

  • The Bee Sting is great so far

I started listening to it a few months ago, I must go back to it!

I just finished it. A thoroughly enjoyable read and I hear they are writing a screenplay so that’s exciting. I loved it. Watching broadchurch, excellent too

  • Watching Traitors & reading IT by Stephen King. Started it in November & got about 300 pages in but paused it to read a couple of Christmassy books. I reckon the 18 weeks of January is more than enough time to get through the rest of it 😅

  • I just finished Pachinko and it was great. Watching Dopesick on Disney. Excellent but harrowing watch.

Dopesick is class. Tough in places, but great

  • I am starting "the name of the wind" by Patrick Rothfuss. Recently got into fantasy with alchemised being a huge game changer for me. Really enjoy coming back to reading after having a baby

Utterly fantastic book, excellent sequel, but read on knowing that the story may never have a conclusion

  • The extended cut of Raymond feists Magician, interspersed with the 5e curse of strahd module

  • Reading The Wager at the minute, great book so far

  • We started with watching Mr Mercedes , excellent ... although the first few episodes have some difficult moments... its just excellent

Oh nice. I loved the book but haven’t seen the series yet.

Id say it was a fantastic read , Brendan Gleenson is superb.

  • I've a stack of old "classic" movies I collect from charity shops so making my way through them. Last night it was The Philadelphia Story, tomorrow it will be Notorious or maybe North by Northwest 😁

I've committed to hibernating this month so it's straight into jammies and a dvd on when I'm home from work!

As for reading, I've some library books to make an effort at but really looking forward to the new Joe Hill book and one called Gone South by Robert McCammon, both xmas pressies.

This is such a good idea! I've just unsubscribed from all the streaming channels and was going to sail the high seas, but ill keep an eye on the dvds in SVP!

  • After a few false starts where I just wasn’t feeling it with other books I’m more than halfway through The Ministry of Time and loving it! It’s described as sci-fi rom com. So good. I’m reading it instead of catching up on sleep!

  • Plur1bus!!

  • Reading IT by stephen King, watching Stranger things from the beginning-first time I've ever watched it, and under the banner of heaven, 2 polar opposites but really enjoying both.

  • Reading the handmaidens tale. Seems appropriate given the state of the us right now.

  • I read The Winter Warriors by Olivier Norek, it's a novel about when Russia tried to invade Finland in WWIi. It's excellent.

  • Started watching Snowfall at the start of Christmas, on Season 5 now. It's worth a watch.

  • Reading The Foundation series On Book 2. Might watch the TV series when I've the books all done

  • I'm watching The Beast in Me on Netflix, 8 episodes worth a quick binge.

    I started that tonight too!

good show. a bit bleak but the acting is often superb

  • Reading all the Bob Mortimer books. Silly enough stories to fly through and lighten the mood in a dreary month

  • Currently watching Journeys into the Outside with Jarvis Cocker, his voice is so soothing....

  • I'm on book 5 of The Bobiverse books. Really enjoyable!

  • Long Island by Colm Tobin.

  • Reading The Bachman Books by Stephen King, just finished The Long Walk earlier today and started Road Work, really enjoying them so far

Must have read those 25 years ago, you awoke memories I had forgotten!

  • Listening to one of the Gray Man books. Reading the latest Dan Brown one. And rewatching Spartacus on Netflix - forgot just how good that show is

  • Watching the Expanse. Reading the Ship of Magic by Robin Hobb.

Robin Hobb is amazing, have you read the first trilogy? I only ask because my friend picked up ship of magic and didn’t realise there were other books in the series

Haha yeah I loved Farseer. To be honest I'm struggling to get into the liveship traders, because I loved Farseer so much. Like it's super hard to adjust to the new trilogy for some reason but I'll get there eventually!

  • Reading Wuthering Heights and really enjoying it, watching the Traitors on BBC

  • Reading 'In Cold Blood' - not exactly cozy...but absolutely unputdownable

  • Andy serkis narrates the lord of the rings trilogy on audible and it’s excellent

  • I'm reading Fellowship of the Ring. A book that iv been meaning to read for years.

Halfway through watching Predator Badlands. It's a bit shit.

  • Currently reading Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn and watching S2 of Slow Horses. Though not doing much tv watching as we started playing Baldur's Gate 3 at the weekend 🤭

I loved Sharp Objects! Must read it again

  • Reading Ronnie OSullivan Unbreakable. Watching the Night Manager and Shameless US.

  • Started watching Foundation season 1. It's quite complex and I'm struggling but slowly piecing it together. Id love more time to read as well

  • The Creative Act - Rick Rubin

  • After many years of telling me it's a good show and me saying I don't think I'd be into it, my partner finally convinced me to watch Better Call Saul. Loving it.

For reading...I'm just about to finish A Court of Thorns and Roses and I'm definitely going to continue the series afterwards. I only started it the other day but I just can't put it down.

Ah lucky you, I'd love to read these again for the first time. When you've finished future books there's bonus or deleted chapters you can find on the fandom subreddit. Hopefully the next bloody book will be out by the time you finish all the series, feels like ages

Still trying to persuade my partner to watch it.

  • I'm reading all the books from the book club list that was in Wake Up Dead Man.

I'd already read one of them and loved it so I thought it would be a good list to use.

  • Started rewatching Homeland for the end of series 1 and kept going. God only knows why. On series 4 now and feel like I am half way through a prison sentence. Still cant stand Dana and just skip all her scenes.

Hoping to finish by the bank holiday and then the sun will come out.

  • Watching Say Nothing, it’s excellent. Reading Beautiful Ugly by Alice Feeney, it’s ridiculous but light and engaging, also listening to Martyr! by Kaveh Akbar audiobook, it’s bananas and so funny, really like it.

  • Currently reading 'atmosphere' by Taylor Jenkins Reid. Thoroughly enjoying it.

  • I've been collecting stephen king and dean koontz books since I was about 10 so I decided this year to either read or audio the dean koontz books from the beginning, I kinda forgot how much I like his writing.

  • Reading “Careless People” by Sarah Wynn-Williams. Made me disgusted more and more about Silicon Valley mafia. Their moral compromises will be judged one day I believe.

And waiting for the 2nd season of “The Pitt”.

  • Watching Stargate Atlantis, reading Dune

  • The Irish civil war in colour. Great book.

    Oooh it's a busy January!

  • Trying to finish "On a Sea of Glass." The bloody Audible app decided to open one night ages ago and finish the last nine hours of this nearly two day long book while I slept. I was so mad I only just got back to reading it out of pure spite.

  • Memories, Dreams, Reflections Carl Jung

  • I've started reading stolen focus by johann hari. So far so good! It's the kinda book you want to keep reading. Highly recommend so far.

  • Watching and enjoying the hell out of Fallout season 2! I love spotting all the Easter Eggs and nods to the games, so much so that I finally went ahead and installed Fallout 4 for the first time since I bought it.

As for reading, I'm about eight chapters into a "spicy" (read: incredibly cheesy erotica) book called "Kiss of the Basilisk". Finding it a bit amatuer-ish in writing style and pace but sure it's more entertaining than "Fifty Shades of Grey". Once I finish that, I have "Medusa" by Rosie Hewlett waiting for me and then I plan to get Catherine Gray's new book "Little Addictions" when it comes out towards the end of January.

  • Watching Falcon and the winter soldier and Percy Jackson season 2 (can you tell I’ve got kids!). Reading the music shop by Rachel Joyce on BorrowBox and All That Is Left of life by Roberta recchia as a hard copy and The teenage brain as my non fiction.

  • The hunting wives on Rte player Perfect escapism for January
