The cost of construction has skyrocketed, development "fees" i.e. taxes are at record highs (up to 100k per house), and it's harder to build than ever, even if you wanted to.
The only thing keeping the construction industry afloat was the sky high prices. Canada's housing is doubly sick, demand pressure was very real, but the supply is just as sick as the demand.
Yeah, politicians love a hidden tax, and what they love even more is a tax that only a tiny part of their voters pay each year.
Most people don't know how much new build housing is taxed. It's fucking nuts, and completely the opposite of what you should be doing during a shortage. Don't tax things you want more of, taxes make it so less of a thing is produced, it's really that simple. Instead we have record breaking levels of taxation on housing. In Toronto it's up almost 1000% (yeah I didn't add an extra a zero) since 2010.
Developers will always build what makes them the most money, in the shortest time, and has the least red tape. So big houses on the edge of town.
Three ways to build lots of affordable housing quickly is to have government support for building hundreds of apartment buildings, 4-plexes throughout every city, and creating prefab mini-house neighbourhoods.
Maybe 50 years ago. Nowadays i don't trust our government, they'd most likely fuck something up and waste money. They should cut all the red tape and get the fuck out of the way imo.
Yes, the red tape and NIMBYism are big problems holding back construction. I’d like to think a determined national effort can be effective. Otherwise it’d be a pathetic statement on Canada’s inability to serve its citizens. So let’s get building!!!
The liberal party has been saying they will increase home building for 11 years yet it’s gone down year after year. Why would you trust the government to change things now?
A national effort to build affordable housing for the proletariat would be, by the definition of the Communists I associate with, a communist endeavor...
I'm going to be as nice about this as one can be, considering the spirit of the holidays.
Please go visit a public library and read the history of many immigrants coming to Canada back in the before and during the 1900's. Part of being one of the catcher mitts of the world even back then, is we ended up taking in people from all sorts of places around the world during those years, though to be fair to the times right now, nothing like what we have going on right now. But proprotionately to the comparative, there were quite a few times were we got big waves of people coming here to escape 'there'.
So I say to you, look at each of those times, and look at where they are coming from, only to come here. Sometimes it gets ... very grey area on some things, and darker yet in others; like that railroad for instance.
1: If you're not of indigenous ancestry you've got fuck all rights to complain about 'immigrants' no matter where they come from or for why they came here.
B: If you didn't want the Capitalists forcing the government to allow for, and encourage, all sorts of immigrants to come here to fill the job market with exploitable low wage accepting proletariat then, like the best time to plant a tree, you should have made sure that you and all of your community had sufficient numbers of children to feed the machine of continual growth economics 30 years ago.
III: If you want a planned and controlled economy and social structure that ensures that there is not excessive immigration to the point that wages are driven down, housing prices are driven up, and your children have to compete with the immigrants that statistically have more children, are better educated, and have stronger familial bonds and 'traditional' cultural practices then, as with planting a tree, you should have voted for more Authoritarian Communist political representatives 30 years ago.
The reason why 'old stock' Canadians are feeling fucked is because they put their trust in Capitalists and the political class that they own and control for their benefit. Authoritarian Communists work for the proletariat against the bourgeoisie, Neo-Liberal Capitalists make the proletariat work for the bourgeoisie.
Unfortunately too many of the proletariat living in Neo-Liberal Capitalist societies are so mesmerized by the carrot of 'one day, if you work hard enough you too can be one of us (laughing behind their hand)' that the bourgeoisie dangle in front of them the don't feel the whips on their backs as they pull the masters cartload of wealth towards the glue factory.
That said...
Authoritarian Communism is literally supposed to be a stage in the process of attaining Utopian Communism, under which there is no money, social class, private ownership of capital (forests, mines, factories, railroads, etc. NOT family homes, pants, and personal possessions), or government. Unfortunately humanity is, in general, too selfishly self interested and corruptible to ever attain it...
Great great great grandmother was the last mixed marriage that occured in the family that was full blood first nations.
Her dying words to my mother, if I was told accurately "Don't let my past hold your future back. Don't let the anger of our people be your anger. You are just as much their family and they are yours, even if they don't see it."
So respectfully, go fuck yourself and your fucking opinion. This country is as much my country as it is their country and so long as you were born here or became Canadian proper; your country too. All other opinions can get fucked.
You may have some salient points in the rest of your comment, but until you delete that toxic fucking shit from your mind, I don't care what elses exist up there.
The nationalization of any large scale resource extraction or infrastructure development to ensure the well being of the proletariat and keep it 'non-profit' and out of the hands of bourgeoisie capitalists is by definition a socialist/communist action; I just happen to prefer to jump over socialism and label it communism..
That’s a good explanation. Thanks. If it’s helpful in assessing my position on this, I think big corporations and their clever corporate lawyers have outfoxed politicians for decades, leaving very little for the majority of Canadians. I don’t want communism. I want the earlier version of capitalism where working people could afford a house and had a sense of hopefulness for their family.
As long as Capitalism continues we're stuck in a 'continual growth' economy predicated on those that have wealth exploiting everyone else to maintain their dominance. There is no possible way to 'go back' to earlier in capitalism, it has to be dismantled and we'd need to literally start over with a level playing field for every worker.
Won't happen. Our kids will eventually become slaves to techno-feudalistic corporate overlords with private armies that control the land they own.
Unless Gen X and the Millennials literally start a French style revolution to remove the Corporatism from power it's not gonna stop, and the generations after that are so totally brain-rotten and incapable of dealing with conflict that they will bend the knee, lick the boot, and take it up the ass as long as their internet feed of dopamine keep coming.
That's great news for well established Liberal Party of Corruption homeowners and supporters not so much for us aspiring net contributing non owners.
I agree Comrade.

Land cost: lol Municipalities: gimme 40k Compliance: gimme 40k CRA: cool house, gimme 13%
I could have 2x3 bedroom concrete homes with a shared pool in Thailand. The savings on not paying property tax is 1000 pad Thai's a year.

Well shutting more sawmills will definitely help things.

Yes Comrade, we should nationalize the means of producing housing.
I think when the most important thing in Canada was building the railroad from coast to coast Canadians didn’t call each other Comrade.
Communist Canadians do.
I'm a Communist.
A national effort to build affordable housing for the proletariat would be, by the definition of the Communists I associate with, a communist endeavor...
Comrade.
Merry Christmas.

So my entire diatribe is meaningless
;) Happy Festivus
On 1 only, because your BS can get bent.

Happy Yuletide.
Never said it wasn't as much your country; I just said you got no right to complain about immigrants.
I guess I don’t know why a national project is inherently communist.

Supply Side Psy-Op
Don't worry, all these problems will magically go away once Canada hits 100M people.
