• While cute, you took a picture of the wrong end of the cat.

  • If it's male (highly unlikely 1 in 3000) the balls should be pretty obvious at this age.

  • 99% of Calicos are females. I’m sure if this were a boy, he’d have a very noticeable ballsack

  • Only 1 in 3000 calicos are male. You're also showing the wrong end to tell sex lol

  • How would we know if you don't show us the end with the genitals?

  • You are showing the wrong end

  • Hard to tell from this direction.

  • Calicos are almost always female.

  • did you ask the cat?

  • Looks female. Male is rare, it takes an extra chromosome for some reason (not a scientist) But this one has tabby stripes in it…So it could be male? -Check the junk! 🥰cutie!

Male calico and tortoiseshell cats are rare because the orange fur gene and the black fur gene are carried on the X chromosome. Two X chromosomes are needed to have both colors. Males with Klinefelter's Syndrome can have both colors because they have an extra X chromosone (XXY).

Klinefelters-Thank you. It was something I had read raising newborns with no mom. We could not tell if she was boy or girl for some time. (Tiny two fit on one hand) she had a tortoise shell sibling too. Very interesting!

I learned about Klinefelter's from a (human) medical program. A patient had early onset osteoporosis caused by low testosterone. Upon examination, doctors discovered that he had testicles the size of grapes.

The other people in the comments saying that the balls would be obvious clearly do not know that male calicos/torties can have underdeveloped testicles.

Side note - male/female chimera cats (XX/XY) can also have both orange and black coloring, as well as having underdeveloped testicles. This is because the two distinct sets of DNA can present themselves in random parts of the body, and can also result in ambiguous genetalia. (I learned about chimerism in humans from a medical program called "I Am My Own Twin.)

Woah! Thats so very interesting. I had never heard of chimera cats! I looked it up-Some are quite beautiful. It speaks also to the spectrum of gender in a way. Thank you for your service also! The world always needs more scientists, vets and doctors. 🙏

    You're welcome! :) Although I'm not a professional scientist, just a nerd.

But another fun fact - Male cats (and humans) can have a genetic condition called Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome. Basically, XY males can develop partial or complete female characteristics because their systems cannot properly process the androgens (testosterone and dihydrotestosterone) that signal their bodies to develop male characteristics.

There was a dog in the doggy dna sub that had something to that affect! The owner thought her dog was female. The vet thought it was female. She sent in her embark test and got an email from them saying that the dogs chromosomes were XY and double checking that the correct dog got swabbed.

I recall a movie-a person that was both gender. It was hard on the character. Us humans try to cut into two sides. (Even built in languages) I have caught myself saying “that guy has nice boobs!” (not being mean btw) maybe it was the androgen thing? Sorry if I’m being silly…but they were nice. 👍 lol!

I don't think I'm familiar with that movie.

Gynecomastia (enlarged breasts in males) has so many different possible causes. Unless the guy had other indicators, I probably wouldn't suspect Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome. Also, he could have been a pre-op trans man who wasn't wearing a binder over his chest.

actually it's also possible due to somatic mutations and chimerism. but that's even more rare. however male calicos due to somatic mutations or chimerism can have XY chromosomes :)

  • Most calicos are female. Like 2% are male and it’s very very rare

    way less than 2% actuallt

  • Your calico is a tabico. That is a calico with tabby stripes in their dark spots. Orange spots always have stripes.

  • Statistically likely to be female but bro, turn the car around.

  • If a calico cat is male that means they have an extra X chromosome (XXY) and are intersex!

  • Most calicos are girls. Let’s just say if she WERE a boy, you’d know.

  • What s with her brow? I m worried

  • Her name is : jamel

  • Snuggly vibes detected!
