Went to my first PCP appointment back in July (33M btw) to try and “get my life on track.” I’m one of those folks who just didn’t care enough about my health and knew I had a lot of issues but wasn’t taking any steps to resolve them. Went to that appointment in July and listed off all the things I was certain were wrong with me. Sleep apnea was on the top of that list but I didn’t know how bad it was. All I know is I would fall asleep at work almost daily, I had almost fallen asleep behind the wheel a few times throughout life, I’d wake up a plethora of times in the night to use the bathroom, etc… my PCP had me do the take home sleep study and set me up with a Pulmonologist. I do the take home, it sends the results to the doctor, I meet with the doctor and I finally learn just how bad things really are going for me every night… AHI = 95.6. I never even knew what AHI was before that day, but when he said “severe is 30 or greater….” my brain instantly was like “dude, you’re 3x that number… how close to dying are you every night?!?!?!” I thought I’d get a cpap that same day, but I was then forced to wait longer for the titration study. I had that study mid November, I got my cpap machine 12/11/2025… the first night I felt like I had a great sleep, but last night I think I truly had a great nights sleep for the first time in 20+ years. When I just looked at the machine (7:30 am is when I had my alarm set to go off), it said I had about 9 hours of sleep with an AHI of 1.4 😭😭😭 I’m mad at myself for not doing this much sooner in life, but I’m glad I finally have meaningful rest at night 🥲. I wake up and feel energized, like I can actually get things done. This subreddit has also been a game changer because it took away a lot of fear and answered a lot of questions for me before I ever scheduled that July doctors appointment. I’ve ordered a handful accessories for my machine thanks to you all. I’m looking forward to actually sleeping every day now 🙏

  • Heartening to hear your story. All the best man.

Thanks, I’m looking forward to this journey 🙏

  • Just remember some nights are better than others. The second half of the first week was the hardest for me. I tore my mask off a couple times in the night without realizing it.

I’m now a month in and still experimenting a bit with different masks and sizes to be the most comfortable.

I think I got a lil lucky with my current mask… it works for me (not now). Only thing I think I’d change is a slightly larger mouth cover, but I have a full goatee, so I probably wouldn’t get a full seal regardless. I know a woke up a couple last times last night due to the way the mast felt, but for the most part I was perfectly fine. I’m more shocked that I didn’t get up once to use the bathroom… I think it’s now been 2 days in a row… pre-cpap, I was using the bathroom 4-5 times a night.

For me, the not getting up to pee is almost the best part.

I’m just waiting for the night I have a full KO… no waking up at all to adjust the face mask, scratch a random itch, just pure 7+ hours of uninterrupted sleep 🥲🙏

  • Welcome to the club 😎. Do yourself a favor and look into a backup power supply, I’ve got a “Jackery”. Now that you’ve got a taste of the good life, a night without power suckkkkssssss.

  • Don’t be upset with yourself. I’m 52 and finally trying to get my shit together. Thankfully my apnea isn’t that severe but wish I had been more proactive at your age. My advice to you is to stick with it and advocate for yourself!!! Wishing you good health.

  • Where do you see in the machine indicating AHI is 1.4? Newbie here

It was under “My Sleep View” on my machine
