Week 10

For the 6th year I'm making a series of posts that attempts to visualize consistency between voters in the AP Poll in a single image. Additionally it sorts each AP voter by similarity to the group. Notably, this is not a measure of how "good" a voter is, just how consistent they are with the group. Especially preseason, having a diversity of opinions and ranking styles is advantageous to having a true consensus poll. Polls tend to coalesce towards each other as the season goes on.

All voters are now ranking Oregon now that every conference has started playing.

Trevor Hass was the most consistent voter this week. The top 3 remains Ferd Lewis, Norm Wood, Madison Blevins, with Steve Virgen moving ahead of Eric Boynton in 4th.

Nathan Baird was the biggest outlier this week for the 2nd week in a row. Kirk Bohls has overtaken Sam McKewon as the biggest outlier on the season, with Rob Long and Jon Wilner still in 3rd and 4th, and Nathan Baird moving up into 5th.

  • Jonas Pope has Maryland ranked, but not a 3-0 Northwestern that beat them 43-3 🤔

I mean, Maryland only lost to the one team that beat Maryland and beat them handily at that!

  • The Week 10 Imgur link is broken, the hyperlink says "undefined.png" Thanks for the fix!

Whoops, thanks, fixed! For some reason if you try to copy the link over too quickly from Imgur it gives you that instead of a proper URL.

  • Lol Auburn affiliated voter having ND at 1, I see you

It's not about you. It's about hating Alabama.

    Thats why its funny

  • John Clay, the Kentucky guy, still has Clemson ranked above ND. Um, what?

We have a quality loss now, and you don’t

    Duh

Probably part of the "that game wouldn't have been close if TL played" crowd

I'm honestly surprised how high Clemson ended up. They're a top 10 team for sure, but I might have guessed 5-7 and not 4.

    [deleted]

Agreed. Who would really be ahead of us?

The way they're blowing the SEC, I'm frankly surprised A&M isn't ahead of you.

They got kind of reckt by bama

I miss our old schedule when we played Bama second to last instead of the second week. We’re finally hitting our stride now and would probably stand a better chance against them than before but sometimes that’s just the way schedules go.

Oh, I agree. Them, Florida, and Georgia all 5 spots too high in my book.

blowing vs blowing out wildly changes the meaning of what you're saying. nice

You’re just trying to pump up ND. They did NOT look good as a team, regardless of talent. There were a half dozen just discipline errors and another dozen just blown plays. Regardless of Lawrence, they did not play like a national championship team.

I still would put them 4. An ot loss to the #2 team with a injured team is about as quality loss as it gets. But to have them above the team they lost to he may as well say I live and die by preseason rankings.

Hard to make an argument that #5-7 are better than Clemson. The big question is whether the injuries and TLaw being out made a difference. Most people think it did (taking nothing away from ND's victory, their dominant lines injured another 4 of our guys on the field)

  • Shout out to Theo Lawson who moved Indiana from 25 to 21

  • Tom Green for BYU is like that friend who is just way too nice. Should I try to make it up to you? Should I be suspicious? Why do you love us so much?

On a real note, Cincy should be ahead of us across the board and should be in the real playoff conversation. Quietly destroying teams every week without any letdown

  • John Clay: "Damn this Notre Dame team and this Clemson team seem so close, it's hard to justify putting one over the other! I just wish there was some way, any way at all, for them to be directly compared to each other! Why, oh WHY won't anyone help me figure this out!"

    🙄

ND loses that game with Lawrence at QB. Will likely see this game again at the end of the season.

Why do you say that? QB was 100% not the reason Clemson lost.

Watching the game, it looks like Clemson could have used more leadership during certain plays. As well, look at overtime. The QB looked like he didn't know what to do in crunch time.

Not having the #1 pick in the NFL could make a massive difference in the game, whether it's his actual play, or the team being more comfortable with him on the field.

  • Bob Asmussen seems like a good dude. Also Wilner putting USC and ASU over Oregon is bold after saying Oregon would lose to Stanford all week

Jon Wilner is probably exceeds the Canzano level of clownlyness

    [removed]

Normally I give Wilner a pass for his rankings, that being said, his reasoning for ranking ASU ahead of Oregon is fucking stupid. Especially when he'd been downplaying Oregon in the run up to the season.

I've only met Bob once but he seems like one of the nicest people in the world

Bob Asmussen is the only legal AP voter

  • Bro get Don Williams OUTTA here with his nonsensical ballots. No Marshall, no SMU?

Fuck it I'll make a trip up to Lubbock for the cause. He can't say no to my persuasion techniques

Im not sure exactly what you mean but please stick to your username and act rationally

  • Crazy how IU beat 3 teams that didn’t receive a single vote and jumped all the way to 10th.....

There's definitely some inertia at play. Indiana beat a Penn State team that was highly ranked at the time for a decent rank and has kept winning. When Maryland beat Penn State much more decisively, no one even considered voting for them, because the same Penn State team is 0-2. It's a tough case for Purdue since they missed the Wisconsin game, but there's an argument that Northwestern has beaten a harder schedule than Indiana at this point in time.

Yeah lol I understand how they got there, just kinda highlights some of the underlying flaws in the ap poll

Oh for sure. I for one am looking forward to an Indiana-Purdue Big Ten Championship rematch, and then a rubber match in the CFP.

I’m down to 3-0 them this season

It's always been a flaw in every poll. Springboard wins have plagued polling for forever.

  • Jon Wilner is still a clown I see.

He picks Stanford to upset us, which didn’t happen, and still puts USC who didn’t control most of their game over us.

Wow did he really, and if so I assume that was before we lost our QB and WR1? In spite of everything (including the 0/4 on FGs), the day went better than I'd expected, and we might be back on track. Rooting for you to win out in a weird year (unless you can lose 2 and we win out).

Lmao, love to see it. To be fair, we were winning, and if we'd stopped the points there, we would have won. Then all of a sudden all these Oregon TDs started showing up, and suddenly none of our FGs counted.

Since when did sports media get to declare winners anyway? We have all learned a lot in the past two weeks!

  • I’ve low key been crushing on Tom Green lately.

I’ve been cussing him out 😂

  • I was downvoted last week for calling Nathan Baird a hack, but he is doing the same thing. Still not voting for Coastal or Liberty and finally put Marshall in the T25.

I want to know what he thinks Wake Forest has done that is better than Coastal or Liberty.

Why do people say they were downvoted when they weren't?

I stopped checking the thread when both of my comments were at -1, turns out people agreed with me

Fair enough, congrats on the unexpected internet points

He's an OSU beat reporter and he's not a particularly good one. I'd be stunned if he has watched a single game of any non top 10 team

He used to be the purdue guy, obviously I'm biased, but I always thought he was really bad for them too.

Listen, this sub has a huge hard on for G5 teams. Reality is, alot of the media and voters dont. They dont play big games, and their SOS is always significantly lower than the P5. You can certainly disagree. Im just explaining.

But alot of these people believe that if coast cal Carolina or BYU or SMU was in the B1G or SEC most years theyd by .500 teams or worse. And realistically, they probably would.

Like i said not picking a fight. But there is logic there, wether you agree or not. Some people reward record/not losing.. some people reward composite talent and SOS/merit. Thats why AP is fucky because everyone has a different approach

  • Theo Lawson u da real MVP

  • Shoutout to McMann who has us at 15. I'll have what he's having (and anyone else who has us in the teens).

  • Kirk Bohls and hanging at the bottom of the consistency list - extremely consistent.

  • John Clay seems like a fine, upstanding gentleman. Brett McMurphy is dead to me.

  • I don't know if Wilner should have an SJSU logo behind his name. Yes, he's at the Mercury News, but Delos Santos is their SJSU guy. I don't think Wilner really cares much about the Spartans, and still hasn't voted for them.

The logos there should be taken with a big grain of salt. It's a hodge podge of beats and alma maters as sourced from Twitter over the years. Voters generally don't seem to have any bias towards or against teams they follow, despite specific anecdotes now and then people like to pick at.

  • I am legit surprised only one person kept Clemson ahead of us. But at least he had us ahead of tOSU.
