[Thamel] Sources: Former Florida quarterback DJ Lagway is planning to continue to take visits before officially committing. He had a positive visit to Baylor earlier this week. One program that has consistently expressed interest is Ole Miss.
  • 355 points Mas790

So he’s not officially committed then. What was all the talk the other day then?

    parent
    293 points BradyGalaxy

I don’t understand recruiting anymore. I also don’t understand what the word committed means anymore either.

    parent root
    50 points BronnyJR

I’m also confused by this. For all the players that already announced they’re committed to a school, did they sign anything or is it just a verbal commitment?

    parent root
    53 points Curt_Uncles

I’m guessing Baylor leaked it after getting a verbal commitment, and this is Lagway’s way of saying “No, I just meant I’m going to be going to Baylor unless I get something better. I haven’t signed shit yet.”

The Demond thing kind of highlights that, with transfers, recruitment is not over until you sign the dotted line and attach yourself to a portion of their rev share. Anybody who hasn’t signed the contract is gettable, and verbal commitments from transfers don’t mean anymore than they do from the high school boys.

    parent root
    9 points JohnPaulDavyJones

I doubt it came from Baylor, at least for the purpose of providing any kind of pressure, since QB wasn't really a position we were looking to fill this offseason. That's why we were all so surprised; the whole goal this offseason was explicitly to beef up the lines.

He's a Baylor legacy who grew up around the program, and we were even favored to land him at one point coming out of HS, so I'm guessing this is just him establishing a potential landing zone, but Baylor wasn't going to shell out a whole bunch of cash to bring in a QB we don't really have a need for.

    parent root
    3 points Sexy_Authy

Yall bring in anyone else promising to fill sawyer’s (admittedly big) shoes?

    parent root
    6 points JohnPaulDavyJones

Nope, we’ve got Nate Bennett, who’s been in the system for a few years and actually pushed Sawyer hard in camp last year.

Bennett has an absolute cannon of an arm, but there’s no way we can do any kind of QB run game with him. He’s ~180 lbs at 6’-1”, so basically the same frame as Marcel Reed. The first huge DL to land on him is going to break his entire skeleton.

    parent root
    5 points ChaseTheFalcon

Well Demond almost proved that even if you sign the dotted line it's not really over

    parent root
    0 points Curt_Uncles

But he ended up almost proving the opposite, since it’s obvious he had agents/lawyers advise him that he was going to get his ass beat in court. Him coming back with his tail between his legs is better evidence of the strength of the contract, not the weakness.

    parent root
    3 points BradyGalaxy

Maybe I haven’t looked around enough but from what I saw it’s just a verbal commitment, I don’t think Lagway actually signed anything yet

    parent root
    1 points ncsuq

Yeah schools are announcing signings, idk if that means anything or what they signed

    parent root
    3 points Recent_Surprise_7391

When they signed it means it’s official. Cutter bolley took awhile to sign and we were scared Nebraska may pick him up

    parent root
    6 points Frictionizer

Apparently it means the same thing my ex-wife Barbara thought it meant

    parent root
    3 points Rusty_Shacklefiat

I also don’t understand what the word committed means anymore either.

Nobody does, but it's provocative, gets the people going

    parent root

I’m gonna be an old man yelling at the sky here, but man this really bugs me. Don’t make this giant over the top post about “committing” in some action font if you…aren’t committed. Or if you’re “resigning”, don’t “recommit”.

    parent root
    2 points gunpowderjunky

Did DJ himself announce he was committing to Baylor? All I can find are reports of him verbally committing.

    parent root
    1 points VineyardWeeds

I definitely dont know what the word committed means either. Turns out you can commit, leave, then come back.

    parent root
    1 points Malpraxiss

    Guess:

Commit these days either means a verbal one or "most interested" until a better option comes along. Nothing to do with signing though

    parent root
    1 points melanctonsmith

Is this our first de-signing announcement?

    parent root

If he didn’t sign he didn’t commit. The WR Gibson says he’s committed to us but he hasn’t signed anything so it’s still not official.

    parent root

He’s committed to the idea of committing

    parent root
    2 points BillyBobChorton

He has a concept of a committment

    parent root
    8 points SCsprinter13

He was only committed according to one reporter at On3.

Other reporters I saw held off on using the word committed and DJ himself obviously hasn't said anything publicly.

    parent root

He was going to Baylor until ole miss found out chambliss might not be eligible.

    parent root

Went to the Kenny Minchey school of commitments.

    parent root
    1 points SmigleDwarf

Schools are paying kids to visit now. So he may just be doing a victory lap to collect some $$

    parent root
    1 points geaux124

He made a commitment to possibly commit on a future date.

    parent root
  • 67 points FSUnoles77

Ruling came in and Ole Miss reached out to set up a visit I'm assuming.

    parent
    8 points jb20047

I think ole miss has been operating under the assumption it would be denied for a while now, there was some buzz around him taking a visit earlier this week.

    parent root
    4 points CumAssault

Nah he’s had this visit set up the whole time. He’s already committed to us but hasn’t signed. His agent is pushing him to go on the last visit just to see

  • 102 points Upbeat-Armadillo1756

    cumassault in shambles

    parent
    22 points CumAssault

Yeah because the sport is dumb. All these agents are pushing guys to do this to “keep the relationships open” basically in case they need to transfer again. But then why commit to any school until the end? DJ’s agent is dumb

    parent root
  • 88 points BrianOverBrawn2

    lol. Lmao even

    parent
    36 points RocketsGuy

His dad (baylor alum) changed his profile pic to him and DJ in a Baylor jersey lol

    parent root
    17 points TripleThreatTua

So basically his dad really wants him to go to Baylor

    parent root
    13 points CumAssault

Our insiders are saying DJ and his whole family want him to come here, it’s his agent that is pushing him to consider other places

    parent root
    7 points TailgateLegend

When in doubt, blame the agents.

    parent root
    8 points vassago77379

    parent
    9 points Charming-Ebb-1981

As a Baylor fan, it’s been obvious that he’s always seen us as a last resort option. Hate to say it, but it’s true. Hope he commits, but the guy is not the second coming of Cam Newton like he thinks he is

    parent root
    5 points J-Train_Boysenberry

I wholeheartedly agree. I have seen a lot of talk about his commitment brings excitement back the program, but from what I have seen from his play, he looks just average. Definitely doesn't seem like he gives us a higher ceiling than Sawyer did last year. Can we just get this 3-9 season over with and get to a new coach.

    parent root
  • 7 points johnjaymjr

AH, there it is. See it'd be easier to just always be disappointed and never expect good things, but it's the hope that gets you, pulls you back in, and then is violently ripped away again.

    parent root

    parent root
    2 points Charming-Ebb-1981

Oh man, as a Baylor fan, I would trade Trinidad for Lagway.

    parent root
    5 points aubieismyhomie

I thought for sure you’d offer Deuce Knight.

    parent root
    4 points UnderwaterB0i

Before hearing this news, I thought we’d hear Deuce to OM as soon as Chambliss didn’t get his extra year.

    parent root
    2 points JohnPaulDavyJones

I'd be pretty shocked if he ended up at Baylor, and Ole Miss certainly has a need.

We were all super surprised by the news about him, since QB is the single position group on our entire roster that's not a mess; it made absolutely no sense for Baylor to shell out big bucks for a QB.

He's a legacy, so I'm guessing that the stuff yesterday was just him establishing an amenable alternative in the case that another school doesn't offer him what he's he's actually looking for, whether that's a commitment to playing time, money, etc.

Lagway vs Daiola. Which former 5 star is signed last?

    parent
  • 8 points SadCrocodile762

He has concepts of a commitment.

In reality don’t sign this dude unless it’s for dirt cheap. He gets a big payday and a lambo and he will 💯 be injured all offseason while expecting to the day 1 starter.

    parent
  • 16 points Wontbackdowngator

Everyone who watched him play at Florida this season knows he is not worth this drama and money. He went into the portal because he was asked to take a cut (was making 4 million) and that he had to earn the starting job.

This is 100% chasing money the did the same thing on NSD when he signed to Florida. All of the sudden USC and Texas A&M were about to flip him and Florida had to up the offer.

    parent
    6 points JohnPaulDavyJones

I wouldn't be surprised if it were money.

QB was the one position that's not a mess for BU this offseason, and our NIL has reportedly dried up somewhat due to Aranda's situation, so it would shock me if Baylor had offered him even what Florida had committed to pay him. We're probably just his acceptable fallback in case another school doesn't offer him what he wants, since he grew up a big BU fan.

    parent root
    3 points Charming-Ebb-1981

As a Baylor fan, I’d rather have him than not - our current team sucks balls, so at least this is positive news. I’m not going to cry if we don’t land him though. I thought he was overrated coming out of high school, and he was super injury prone at Florida. He also seems to think of himself as like the second coming of Cam Newton or something, and he’s just not. That’s not to say that he can’t turn into a good quarterback, but I don’t think the opportunity cost is really all there

    parent root
    4 points ertyertamos

I don’t think it’s standard to continue visiting schools after you supposedly made a commitment. Then again I don’t understand anything about recruiting anymore ig

    parent root
    3 points JohnPaulDavyJones

Ironically, Aranda used to encourage recruits to continue visiting other schools, back before the portal and everything. He wanted them to be super comfortable that they wanted to be at Baylor.

Turns out the downside to that ethos is that other teams will just flip all of the recruits you got in on and got committed early. Not an awesome plan.

    parent root
    2 points BathroomHopeful241

Guys take official visits after committing all the time. This is actually a pretty normal situation as far this new era of CFB goes. A de commit is hardly unique.

    parent root
    1 points JakeSteeleIII

It’s the same as kids coming out of high school and giving a verbal commitment and continuing to visit other places.

Did he actually sign an agreement or did someone jump the gun and misspoke on the situation? If he didn’t sign anything he’s not committed.

A quick look at current NFL draft stories now says Trinidad is a 'Caleb Williams clone' who will go no lower than the Dolphins at 11 in the first. The 11th pick is 5-6-7-8 million. Apparently this draft is light on QBs; balling out in two playoff games was perfect timing and a great idea for his financial position in life.

    tl;dr: he gone.
