Last night during the fourth quarter both announcers incorrectly stated that Carson Beck is playing his 7th year in college football. This has been repeated all over social media, including by fans disappointed by the NCAA’s denial of an extra year for Trinidad Chambliss. Beck enrolled at UGA in 2020 and has received one COVID year and one redshirt, making him a 6th year
Fowler had a tough night with numbers
I’m a little worried about Fowler.
I hope he's okay. He seemed kind of out of it several times
lots of flubs and i noticed he avoided trying to pronounce last names on more than one occasion
I may be wrong but Herbstreit kept calling CharMar Brown, Marty. Does he go by Marty as well?
His real name is Charmar but he goes by Marty.
Charmar McFly
WE GOTTA GO BACK….TO DA U
This made me laugh way too hard
That’s like Jacory Croskey-Merritt going by Bill
Nah, I can see how you get Marty out of CharMar. Just chop off the first syllable and add -ty to the end. Not uncommon for a unique name to be shortened to something more familiar.
Bill is a nickname completely unrelated to the name Jacory
My mom's boss's name was Winthrope but he went by Bill. At least the first initial, W, suggested that his name was William.
Marty from Nebraska used to be Kamaru Usman
Nice
Didn't think I would see someone with a Javelina flair.
He's been like this for years. He's horrible at this job.
Respectful but strong disagreement right here
He also sucks at tennis
Was about to say that, and unfortunately ESPN just gave him even more tennis responsibilities.
That whole broadcast seemed extremely weird and off. It seemed like a regular season game with random announcers
It was very bad. More than one error in announcing, including a major flub involving the score, rushes to judgement on reviews, mispronouncing names.
When mistakes were made, there were awkward and tense pauses; almost like the intern in charge of feeding them stats/talking points was completely shitting the bed.
I like when yelled he they stopped them from getting the first then Lacy spun and got the first.
Even after the game Holly Rowe seemed off interviewing the players and team, just a weird broadcast.
Agreed. I’m surprised I haven’t seen any comments about Saban at halftime. He seemed really out of it too and had a hard time pulling together a coherent thought
Was wondering if he couldn’t see the field well. Even though plenty of announcers do not have trouble for NFL games.
They have monitors too.
Even the Phone A Ref was bad. It felt like the game had passed him a he had passed his bed time.
When that ole miss receiver clearly dropped the ball and the ref CLEARLY signaled incomplete, and he was confused as shit
“And he’s tackled for a loss…………nearly………., but escapes for a 5 yard gain and a first down”
Can’t believe he’s headed down under for the Aussie open right after the championship. Dude needs a break
I'm a HUGE tennis fan, and he's been a very good studio host and match commentator for quite a while (decades at this point). I'm mega impressed and appreciative that he kept on doing tennis broadcasts simply because he loved the sport. He certainly didn't have to as his career expanded and flourished. He'll fly back and forth to college game sites and the US Open in September. Or at least he has; maybe he doesn't do it every year.
Me too! The schedule/grind he keeps up during the Open and when College Football starts is intense. He’s fantastic as a tennis commentator. And what I have always loved about him is he really revers and respects the history and venues.
Really looking forward to the AO. Can't believe it's already here. With the time difference, it's basically wall to wall tennis from 6 pm until whenever I want to stop ( at least the first week) - 11 pm, 1 am, or even later if I stay up to watch AO night matches (which start around 2:30 or 3:30 am where I live in USA CST). Second week wrecks me because I end up staying up (or getting up) for a lot of the late round night matches. But I love it. I'll make the sacrifice for some of those matches.
Don’t worry he’ll be in the booth with people that make him seem like the one with the marbles still.
He was damn near slurring his speech trying to pronounce Chambliss at times it was wild
It's been a few times the last few seasons. He's getting old.
He's 63, which isn't that old. The pace he keeps is probably starting to tire him out more at his age.
63 is old. Not like he can die at any second old. But it's old.
He's been the goat for a long time.
Significant cognitive decline at 63 is pretty unusual. But if he's really starting to slip, I hope he retires sooner rather than later. It's kind of sad seeing people like that past their prime: Keith Jackson, Lee Corso, and Joe Starkey (Cal's radio guy) all hung on way too long.
Did I hear him say that Ole Miss would be up 8 points (while down 2) if they scored a touchdown on one of their later possessions?
It was Ole Miss, down 17-16. He said they were going in for a touchdown to go up 8. Had the wrong team completely.
Edited.. A bit hypocritical on my end.
I meant Fowler had the wrong team, wasn't criticizing you. Sorry man
Hahaha I completely thought you were criticizing me.. Thought to myself, "well that was a bit harsh". Lol.
Yea I heard that too. I was thinking "what???"
Yup my dad caught that and was like "How are they going to score 9 points on one play??"
He thought he was at a UFL game
YES!!! I thought I had a stroke!
Seemed to not know what happened on the field several times.
There was one play where you could clearly see a line judge furiously waving off a pass, and Chris was for seemingly seven or eight seconds wondering what the result of play was. That's just one of like three or four instances I myself captured where he was confused or said something that was flat out wrong
Honestly think he was just in the bathroom watching it from his phone while taking a shit
I feel attacked
Yeah a pretty egregious one was a clear incompletion while out of bounds by ole miss where he believed it to be a catch and then spent about 30 seconds being confused at why they weren’t updating the yards to go
Fowler had a rough night overall. His tone was all over the place on big plays like he didn't know what he was doing. And then just fumbling words and using incorrect terms. Very strange.
Fowler had a rough night altogether. Terrible announcing by him and Herbstreit last night.
He had a tough night understanding what is a catch
The "rules analyst" also got nearly everything wrong last night too.
Not as much as Miami defenders had trouble understanding how to catch
Like they always say, if a DB could catch they’d be a WR
There was the play at the end of the first quarter. Ole Miss didn't have to snap, but they rushed up with 8 seconds left and did a hard count, successfully drawing Miami offsides for a free 5 yards.
Announcer just kept going on about how smart it was for Ole Miss to go no huddle, to try to spark some offense. Just completely out of touch with what they were doing.
Sean McDonough is ESPN’s best play-by-play guy and they have failed to realize that for decades
WOAH!
Mcafee said he was 45 years old ☠️
Did they ever explain why there was a stoppage with about 35 seconds left and both teams had 2 timeouts?
It sounded like Herbstreit thought that Ole Miss was only down by 3 going into that final drive. There were like 12 seconds left and he mentioned you don’t need a Hail Mary just get it to the 20-25
He was saying that with the thought that the shot to end zone to end the game could be closer and therefore more likely to succeed.
He stinks
I don't necessarily think he stinks, but I have never bought into Fowler as a PXP guy. To me he was perfect in the studio, and his style never really translated to PXP in my mind.
Ya, I'm not saying he's devoid of positive qualities, he's just a bad announcer
Have you considered that it feels like he's in his seventh year?
He's this year's Aaron Craft.
I miss that man
I was googling him the other day and apparently he’s a doctor now lol.
That’s why he played at OSU for so long, takes a while to become a doctor lol
I fucking very much do not miss that man
The man knew what fouls B1G refs would/wouldn’t call and walked right up to that line.
Sweet, sweet, prince
It feels like it's been Aaron Craft's years in college since I've seen an Aaron Craft joke online.
This is Perry Ellis erasure.
i was amazed to find he was only a 4 year player
and he’s younger than me. oh my god
My favorite Perry Ellis joke came from Twitter years ago and was something to the effect of “Perry Ellis is/looks so old that he asks his roommates to “tape his stories for him” on road trips”
Aaron’s Craft, JT Barrett, Braxton Miller - OSU has a pan-sports history of “he’s still playing?!” guys
The JT Barrett piece.
It’s an educated wish
It def felt like that last year during certain moments
Only the 7th? Felt longer for me
Tbf, Miami did just have a guy play his NINTH year of college football for them in 2024.
Probably because 6 years in college football is too fuckin much.
2020
2021
2022
2023
2024
2025
2026
7 years of college football, boom roasted.
/s
I mean to be fair, 2020 kind of felt like 2 years
2020 was like 30 years ago.
And it lasted 30 years
So really, Beck has actually been playing for 36 years!
60 years! He's already retired!
That would make me like 100. Which feels about right
Which is wild, because 2012 was just a couple years ago.
Jesus, putting that into prospective is crazy because I started college and finished it within that timeframe
That reminds me of the fact about Calvin Johnson being a sophomore in high school when Tom Brady played in his first Super Bowl and was inducted into the Hall of Fame the same year Brady played in his final Super Bowl.
Yeah but you forgot to factor in playing for the Lions killed his desire to play football. It takes a special organization to do that to Barry Sanders and Calvin Johnson.
Oh, I look at the trivia as the guy played three years of high school, three years of college, had a long and productive career worthy of making the Hall of Fame, retired and waited the minimum years to become eligible for the Hall, and got voted into the HoF all while Tom Brady was playing in Super Bowls. It really puts into perspective how long Tom Brady was able to play at an elite level.
But yeah, the Lions’ inept management robbed us of years of two of the best players to ever play their positions, because both were still capable of playing when they hung it up.
That's nothing. In the NHL, Hall of Famer Bobby Orr was born, drafted, played his entire career, and elected to the HoF, all during the course of Gordie Howe's HoF career.
Really not a fan of laying it all out like that because I don’t wanna face the fact that it’s been that many years since I was in college
Exactly! He said 7 YEARS, not 7 SEASONS. Pay attention people.
Computer engineers' 12/25
All joking aside, if he enrolled early in January as a freshman, wouldn’t this be 7 years?
Technically he has played college ball or has been on a college team during 7 calendar years, but not 7 football seasons.
Technically correct, the best kind of correct.
It's my favorite, personally.
Unless you're married.
No way, it might actually be his 8th and gives me more reason to be mad
I heard ninth
many people are saying tenth
I heard that motherfucker had like 30 goddamn seasons of college football.
He’s actually in his mid 30’s and has made it to the other side of the aging curve
Woah. He's only 23? He was 17 at the beginning of the 2020 season.
I got some bad news for you...
"A lie can travel halfway around the world before the truth can get its boots on." -Mark Twain
I always heard it as pants
Me too, but I checked before posting.
Username checks out
This doesn’t fit my agenda!
But Malachi Toney being 11 when Beck was a freshman certainly will! He may not be in his 7th year but the point stands he’s insanely old for college football lol
Very old yes for sure, but why haven't I been hearing anything about Trinidad Chambliss being OLDER than Beck?!
Probably because the old dude from Ferris state is a feel good story while the millionaire living in Miami after already playing at Georgia while dating a millionaire IG model is just annoying
I reject your reality and substitute my own
If this is an elaborate 6-7 joke, I’m burning everything down
Did you guys think Fowler was favoring ole Miss or Miami or neither? Just curious. I had a view but someone whose opinion I respect had the opposite.
Chris Fowler is usually very good at not favoring anybody and knowing how to just enjoy good football as a neutral. He might turn it up for an underdog or big comeback but I’d argue that’s just him doing his job to echo the excitement of the average viewer.
Kirk, on the other hand…
Kirk was fellating Miami
He wants so badly to be able to say that he caused us our success because he (rightfully) blasted our program on national TV in 2021 which got our admin to do something.
I honestly don't care. He definitely got the admin to realize they were killing the program by not going all in.
What did he actually say? I may have missed this entirely.
This is the video everybody talks about; he essentially dressed down Miami’s admin for allowing a powerhouse to decline so shamefully.
https://youtu.be/YzOjvLKUF5w?si=8rUJER3QpOnz5fRU
Damn yeah that was well said and sure sounds familiar. Hopefully we can rejoin you at the top here soon and mock FSU together.
Hearing Clemson mentioned as a powerhouse 😭 man we suck 😔
If he can take credit for that, do we get to take credit for your 2017 season by beating Al Golden into Unemployment?
2017? You’re off on your years buddy. 2017 Richt was our coach already.
Hes trying to take credit for the good 2017 season under richt because Clemson got golden fired. I’ll always appreciate that favor from them.
Only game I missed in like 20 years. I knew it would be a bloodbath I took a trip to California instead lol.
Im well aware, firing Golden led to Richt having the 2017 year
Got it Misread your message.
Team vs team, he was def pro Miami. That said, my god he was insufferable talking bout both QBs
Kirk has to be one of the WORST announcers I’ve ever listened to. He used to be good but then he just became a corporate shill.
But he has a dog!
How fast they were trying to waive away the PI at the end made me realize very quickly these guys depend on ESPN to get paychecks and they can't talk about missed calls like that.
Since the year is currently 2026, technically he has been with the program during 7 different calendar years: 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025, 2026.
But yeah they should have said six instead of seven.
I think he was there for spring 2020 camp. So he's "technically" been enrolled in college for 7 different school calendar years. Take that for what its worth.
But he is not in his 7th year of eligibility from any aspect. The title game will be his last game.
Please I can't take it anymore with six seven
He played behind Stetson Bennett IV. Where do you think he learned it?
JT Daniels was there to teach him, too
Also he was a graduate transfer
Confused the hell out of me that I looked up his enrollment date. He has been enrolled in college for 6 years and 3 days now. So like, maybe cause it is now the 7th year? Either way I hate it.
Average day in the misinformation age
Yeah. I heard that, googled Beck like I’m sure a few thousand other folks did as well, then sat and counted on my fingers.
It’s only seven if you’re like “Well, 2026 is the 7th calendar year he’s been a college football player.”
Just wait until they somehow give him another year of eligibility.
He's played a college football game in 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025, and 2026. :)
6 7 heh heh
You shouldn't give your phone to your 8-year-old like that
I was born in 1969. I have been alive in seven decades but not for seven decades.
Early 60s here, and same.
Yea it's only his sixth and he's 28 cause he was a late bloomer
Weird way to say he's in his 8th year, but who am I to judge your word choice?
Lol
I got nothing against the guy but I don't see a bunch of NFL greats with ridiculous flame tattoos on their throwing arm.
Lmaoooo
A lot of people go to college for 7 years.
I know. They're called doctors.
Technically speaking, it is 2026, and so this is the 7th calendar year in which he has played football.
I did my bachelor’s degree in three years and added a masters degree in another year, while working 40+ hours per week.
Beck better be working on his second Ph.D. by this point.
His last season of playing college football should've been 2023.
Only 6 years not 7 years!
That's Doctor Carson Beck to you
Still way too long for someone to play CFB
Oh wow — 6 rather than 7??? What a huge difference!!!
I only watch CFP. It blew my mind no one cared Stetson Bennet was 26… like bro move on with your life. You’re an adult what are you doing.
He’ll get his first nat. championship loss in 10 days.
I bet his major is “undecided”.
What classes is he taking? US History 12?
I mean technically it 2026 so 2020 to 2026 is seven years.
What sort of match does The U give him on his 401K contribution?
I think he meant seventh semester, not seven years, right?
When I saw the title, I was honestly expecting this to explain how he was actually in his 8th year.
Wouldn’t him being a 7th year also insinuate he was a 16yo at the beginning of his Freshman year? Lol
Technically this is his 7th calendar year (2026) in which he has played cfb
With his November, 2002 birthday. How is he even in his 6th year? Seems like he would have had to reclassify up a year in order to be c/o 2020.
Not yet!
He's no Chris Weinke.....
Crazy thing is, he's still only 23 after being in college seemingly forever. He got a little playing time as a 17 yr old true freshman.
I laughed when the announcer said that. Not because I knew he was wrong. Rather, because it was hilarious that he dragged him, right or not.
FMFFM
I caught that last night as well and had to look it up. Didn’t sound right when it was mentioned.
Oh I thought they were talking about the TE who caught the ball.
Joe Louis was not 75 years old
Not sure if Fowler meant it like this, but Beck began his career at Georgia in 2020, which would have been his 1st calendar year in college football. That would make 2026 his 7th calendar year. He has not completed 6 full years in CFB, but I can see how someone might have made the claim of “Year 7” in this manner.
All that said, Chris Fowler is an asshat of the highest order and deserves zero benefit of the doubt.
Fowler gets a lot of facts wrong on broadcast consistently.
Only took 7 years to get to six years, plus a little charity and the ACC is here with receipts
Most people can count.
It's like when you'd meet people at freshmen orientation who would say that "well technically I'm a sophomore."
