my parents (white) who are artists moved here in 2008 when it was cheap and they needed space to make the large sculptures they do. They don't own a gallery or anything like that though. They operate online completely. I was born and raised here and was just used to how it was before covid. Maria hernandez park, shopping on knickerbocker, ecs. It wasn't until after covid \started middle school and the amount of white people and modern/gentrified business just suddenly appeared and I started to realize how much more white people like me were around me. This was also the same time where I would regularly get picked on for being the only white kid in the school and people would often blame me and mock my family claiming that they are ruining the neighborhood. Im now genuinely wondering if me and my family are contributing to it (we usually support local businesses). The building we live in now charges 4.5k monthly for a studio and the only reason why we can afford to live in nyc at all is because our apartment is rent stabilized. It all sounds like im overeactijng but i really just wanna know weather me and my family are ruining this neighborhood or not.
Get some fresh air bro
Yes sorry your only option is to move to Ohio :(
half my family lives their
*theyre
There*
well there’s your answer
Hipsters on here don’t like when you use improper spelling/grammar. They’ll downvote you like you just killed sum1.
You're gentrifying my reddit feed
mb
The real answer to this is people live where it's most affordable for them, sometimes it's at the cost of others. But what were your parents supposed to do, live somewhere they can't afford so a bunch of randos on reddit don't get upset. It's nonsense. Gentrification is a matter of government policy and poor planing of housing. If you're upset about it lobby politicians but it's not something to feel guilty about.
You’re 14, it’s not for you to worry about.
Govt and land developers gentrify neighborhoods and are responsible for the makeup of neighborhoods not individual people, even if individuals get blamed.
Artists are the 1st gentrifiers.

Aw did the gentrifier artist get offended
If you’re born and raised here you are, by definition, not a gentrifier but a native. Welcome to the club son
No you are not a gentrifier.
Gentrifiers are the people who change the fabric of the neighborhood through speculative investment.
Every gentrifying generation is itself pressured by new gentrifiers 7-15 years later.
It's the real estate karma circle of life.
to some yes to others no
This is America. As an American citizen you have a right to live anywhere you want and no one can stop you. Don’t let the haters get you down.
People shouldn't be blamed for moving to the only place they can afford. Blame the system that made everything unaffordable.
yes making art and living in an affordable apartment is evil
Oh come on. Don’t act like that’s all it’s about.
Don’t worry about it kid it’s the most famous city in the country and one of the most famous in the world. It’s amazingly diverse, people come and go and the neighborhoods are always changing. Just be a positive part of your community and you’ll belong.
Is Bushwick the most famous in the country? Oh, yeah, the 2024 or 2023 timeout list, right?
Dear god.
Looks like we got a 3 year transplant here folks

gentrification is good actually
Eat a steak and go outside
Your parents are, not you.
White = Gentrifier even if your family lived in Brooklyn since the 1800’s it does not matter
I found out the other day one of my ancestors settled in Bushwick after leaving Ireland because of the potato famine.
It's unfortunate what those Germans did to this nice immigrant Irish neighborhood, opening up all those breweries and building all those gaudy houses with their wealth.
The Dutch were the OG gentrifiers of NY back in the 1600s
Lmao nah bro. I’ve met true white trash native townies and the preppiest gentrifier black people from the suburbs. Gentrifier tends to be a race thing but it’s completely economic and it’s also about who is from here. Sorry that if a family has been here since the 1800s, they are not gentrifiers that’s actually retarded
Untrue.
Their patents moved her in 2008…
Puerto Ricans who were in Bushwick since the 60’s maybe 70’s are the only non gentrifiers. Truly
Nah you're not dude, you're fine.
