my parents (white) who are artists moved here in 2008 when it was cheap and they needed space to make the large sculptures they do. They don't own a gallery or anything like that though. They operate online completely. I was born and raised here and was just used to how it was before covid. Maria hernandez park, shopping on knickerbocker, ecs. It wasn't until after covid \started middle school and the amount of white people and modern/gentrified business just suddenly appeared and I started to realize how much more white people like me were around me. This was also the same time where I would regularly get picked on for being the only white kid in the school and people would often blame me and mock my family claiming that they are ruining the neighborhood. Im now genuinely wondering if me and my family are contributing to it (we usually support local businesses). The building we live in now charges 4.5k monthly for a studio and the only reason why we can afford to live in nyc at all is because our apartment is rent stabilized. It all sounds like im overeactijng but i really just wanna know weather me and my family are ruining this neighborhood or not.
