The crazy thing was that Obama was extremely slow if I remember correctly to do anything about gay marriage. Obama supported the Defense of Marriage Act until 3 years into his first term (2011), only announced support for gay marriage in 2012 while running for re-election (as support for it was approaching levels of support for interracial marriage in the 80s/90s), and he never really pushed congress to codify it into federal law. He just updated federal websites after supreme Court cases that allowed it, which has put us into a situation where Trump's court could overturn it whenever they see fit.

The crazy thing was that Obama was extremely slow if I remember correctly to do anything about gay marriage. Obama supported the Defense of Marriage Act until 3 years into his first term (2011), only announced support for gay marriage in 2012 while running for re-election (as support for it was approaching levels of support for interracial marriage in the 80s/90s), and he never really pushed congress to codify it into federal law. He just updated federal websites after supreme Court cases that allowed it, which has put us into a situation where Trump's court could overturn it whenever they see fit.
If anything, he was shockingly unsupportive of the gay community throughout his first term and lackluster in his second.

I stopped class to take the call because I thought my grandmother was in the hospital or something worse, and my stepmother had called to gloat about something that our Democrat governor had been caught doing (I can't even remember who the governor was at that point).
The weirdest thing was we had never talked politics, so I was completely taken off-guard by this sudden "own the libs" thing she was doing. I told her I was in the middle of a class, and when I called her back later, I told her that wasn't what she had my number for, and she got offended.

Trans people are fewer in number, less visible to the average person, and harder for many cis people to intuitively understand. That makes them a convenient outgroup for fear based politics.
What often gets missed is that a lot of conservative leadership doesn’t actually care in a moral sense. The hostility is transactional. If demonizing a smaller group energizes a larger, highly motivated religious voting bloc, they’ll do it without hesitation.
Using Trump as an example, not as an endorsement. I genuinely don’t think he personally cares what consenting adults do in private. His long time mentor and close friend was a closeted gay man, which doesn’t exactly line up with moral outrage over sexuality.
Where he does care is power. He is perfectly willing to sell anti LGBT policy to the religious right because that bloc votes, organizes, and demands it. The hostility is transactional, not ideological.
That’s also why some LGB folks think aligning with those groups will protect them. It won’t. Once an outgroup stops being useful or compliant, the target just shifts.
Does this make it right? Absolutely not. Understanding root causes just makes it easier to dismantle them.
Two things can be true at once. Trans people are being deliberately used as a political wedge, and not every religious or conservative person is acting out of conscious malice. A lot of people are just absorbing a story they’re being told repeatedly.
Fear is easier to sell than empathy, especially when the group being targeted feels abstract instead of personal.
It’s also worth recognizing that trans people have been a recurring scapegoat in authoritarian movements going back to the 20th century.
When regimes need a small, easily distorted group to rally fear, enforce conformity, and distract from real power consolidation, gender nonconformity is one of the first targets. Any LGB person who thinks this stops with trans people is misunderstanding how outgroup politics works. It never ends with just one group.

My dad got kinda like this back in the day, although never so far gone. He always had anger problems and often was verbally abusive when we were kids and usually when alcohol was involved. Still, when he ended up losing his job with a company hed been with for almost 20 years, he was broken somehow in a way that I find it hard to articulate. He spent more time at home every day just drowning in daytime TV and conspiracy videos (which hed always been a fan of in a healthy way before, but after it got a little out of hand). He ended up yelling about Obama if you even brought the government up to him and how he was going to take away guns and was a socialist and all that. It got old quick. Eventually though, after several trump terms now, a heart attack, medication for his anger, and the birth of my niece, hes chilled out tremendously and is more focused on taking what he can from each day.
