I think part of the disconnect is what each side means by gay. To homophobes, being gay is acting out on your attraction to the same sex, while everyone else thinks the attraction itself is what makes you gay. When one side includes people in the closet, anything that makes other gay people accept themselves for who they are is actually making them gay. I've heard of that- sometimes the increased blood flow from fear can result in enough amplified blood flow to end up with an erection. The whole "being gay is a choice" was started and promoted by closeted bisexual guys because for them, it was sort of true. It let them deny a part of themselves to avoid social stigma while simultaneously throwing gay people under the bus.
When there's less social stigma you see how prevalent bisexuality actually is, just look at how many out bisexual women there are. Thankfully Gen Z and Alpha seem to be more accepting of gay guys and guys seem to be more comfortable experimenting with same-sex attraction.

Let me tell you how I found out I was gay.
I pieced together the fact that I liked to hang around mostly boys, didn't feel attracted to any girl my age, even the ones that kissed me, the fact that I spent the majority of our time in the store looking at the underwear packaging.
I didn't have any interactions with anyone gay, nor did I consume any gay media outside of the occasional episode of Will and Grace. There are some environmental things that can contribute towards being gay, but having someone telling you how fun it is to he gay doesn't dictate what you get aroused by.

I understand you can't influence someone's sexuality but people have opened up to their sexuality later in life due to some event that happened. I knew I liked all genders from a young age. My first celebrity crushes were Lita and Jeff Hardy, Batista, and Fran Drescher in The Nanny. I've never really had a preference but even as a kid I would have crushes on boys and girls. I also knew I was trans from a really young age, though I didn't have the words for it until high school.
There is something that can alter your sexuality, though, and that is drugs. Lots of different drugs can shake your brain around and change things up. And I say alter, not change, because usually it's not permanent.
I like to label these people radical gender queer activists. They believe being lgbtqia is a choice and you can convince someone they are queer. What they really mean is that they're tempted and desperately trying to avoid being labeled queer publicly.

I feel like if anything, society and/or media has had the ability at times to make gay people think they're straight, or that they have to be/appear straight.
I think part of the disconnect is what each side means by gay. To homophobes, being gay is acting out on your attraction to the same sex, while everyone else thinks the attraction itself is what makes you gay. When one side includes people in the closet, anything that makes other gay people accept themselves for who they are is actually making them gay. To them, things were fine while you hated yourself and forced yourself to act straight.
