"So this Hello Kitty tattoo on my ass is gonna scare Mr Tanaka?" 😂

    parent root

Well he also said it was a Hello Titty kattoo so who knows. 🤣

    parent root
    30 points JackxForge

I have one tattoo. It's a peach on my ass. I'd love to see old Japanese men get bent out of shape about it.

    parent root
    25 points gordonpamsey

    Something is getting bent.

    The fucking smoke detector beep

    parent
    160 points GooginTheBirdsFan

Is it bad I didn’t hear that mf until I read this

    parent root
    71 points neatoburrito

I don't know if I'm super sensitive to the beep or what but I never don't hear it.

    parent root
    22 points datsoar

Didn’t hear it until you pointed it out but that’s because that tone is basically the same as my tinnitus

    parent root
    6 points AndySocial88

I still dont hear it. 😭

    parent root
    60 points DonutWhole9717

    Damn urban crickets

    parent root
    42 points bebop1065

I'm certain the beep has become part of Black video culture now unless the content is somewhat serious. Who can't laugh at it these days? Like, seriously dude? Change the fucking battery already!

    parent root
    30 points Val_kyria

Nah, that's just the noise the hall makes!

    parent root

    parent root
    4 points Think-Ganache4029

I have no idea why my people don’t change it, I know my parents would take forever to do so. I can’t take it tho, also I’m afraid of burning to a crisp in my sleep

    parent root
    3 points bebop1065

They think they are aware enough to wake up once they smell the smoke. They don't take into account how sneaky CO is. That shit will put you in a deeper state of sleep so you can't wake up, ever.

    parent root
    18 points Cultural_Industry303

I had the same experience when I was in Japan for work. Got politely turned away because of my tiny tattoo. It was partially my fault because I might have snuck in without it being noticed because of the size. The lady gave me the big "X" symbol with her crossed arms in across her body. She gave me the smile and the head shake too. It was the most polite denial of entry I've ever experienced.

Many onsens in the Kyushu region allow tattoos less common in the Kyoto area.

    parent
    92 points KakumeiDiscoBall

I went to a place in Lake Biwa crawling with Yakuza that did not care. Shared the bath with one old Japanese lady with dyed blonde hair and dragon tattoos. I went to a place in Hiroshima where I covered all my tattoos with giant white tattoo covers and all the old ladies gave me the evil eye. It is very dependent on the establishment. I like to reserve individual baths now when I visit.

What? Super conservative Kyoto doesn't like tats?! Next you're gonna tell me Alabama is racist.

    parent root
    2 points Painek_07

I thought Alabama's state motto was "closer kin, deeper in." Or does racism and incest kinda go hand and hand?

    parent root
    12 points Training-Chain-5572

    Kobe area too

For... let's call it "historical" reasons

    parent root
    11 points howtofall

I had 2 medium tattoos on my arms and was allowed in one in Nagano, but had to cover them with giant bandaids. Was absolutely worth it until they started to peel off and my incredibly relaxing visit suddenly became very stressful.

    10 points Narrow_Grapefruit_23

    Good to know! Thank you!

    parent root

Yes, my husband and i went to one in that area because of tats. It was really nice.

The main reason I don’t have a single dot of ink after living there so long. They are still strict about that zero irizumi life.

    parent
    46 points tehtris

My sister and I are the only humans I know with zero tattoos. I like to joke about "I may have to commit a crime" or "I don't care about anything enough."

In reality I like the OEM fresh off the factory floor look.

    parent root
    26 points Starrwulfe

Imma start calling my lack of body art and one pierced ear, “vintage GDM” (ghetto domestic market)

    parent root
    10 points tehtris

Lol wtf. I have only one ear pierced also. I don't actually object to piercings and some day plan on getting my other one done. Also I'm a Honda guy, I know all about JDM lol.

    parent root
    19 points DemadaTrim

I just go with "There's no image I like enough to be stabbed a bunch in order to have it permanently on my skin."

Plus I have ADHD, I'd be tired of that shit in like a week.

    parent root
    8 points tehtris

This is a lot of it if I have to be honest. I'm like one day "OMG IM GOING TO MAKE A STOP ANIMATION OUT OF CHEESES" and then the next day I'm like "OMG IM GOING TO BUILD A ROBOT OUT OF CHEESES"

    parent root
    12 points SunnySkiesODST

Maybe you should focus on cheeses cause I'm sensing a theme here. Is there like a cheese wheel maker career?

    parent root
    5 points Imthemayor

I have ADHD too but it works kinda the opposite for me

I catch my one tattoo (the mark of the slayer from Doom) in the mirror and go "oh yeah, sweet"

I was worried about this because I have tattoos that can’t be covered, like on my hands. But everyone was really nice and the only comments I got were inquiries of meaning. We also went to a town called Kinosaki, which had a lot of onsens and advertises that they are explicitly tattoo friendly. And they were. It was a beautiful place.

Japan is more xenophobic than I anticipated and it’s crazy because they’re going to need outsiders to save their rapidly declining population

    parent
    63 points CosmicEveStardust

What about their history and culture led you to anticipate them being not extremely xenophobic?

It's been a while since I've last been to Japan. I've got ink now so I'm gonna have to do research to find onsen that cater to foreigners, they tend to be more lax about tattoos.

Haha happened to me first hand years ago when I first went to Japan with my japanese friend and his family at some resort in Mie.

I didn't care too much because his dad paid for my whole stay at the resort and they were super kind about it telling my friend it was policy. My friend thought I was probably going to get denied but wanted to try anyway.

So I just wandered around until they were done. Afterwards him and his brother kept talking about how refresh they felt. Then I started to feel some type of way 😂

He told me the same reasoning. Tattoos being affiliated with gangs. My only tattoo at the time was 力 on my wrist.

I'm guessing it isn't as bad today though. I went again last May and see so much more japanese people with tattoos these days. But I could be wrong.

  • 1 points Icy-Whale-2253

The only person allowed to give me hell about my tattoos is my mom.

    parent

I went on a trip to Tokyo, Japan with my son back in 2020. I have my hands tattooed. On our way back to our hotel one late evening, we missed our train stop and ended up being way off course. We walked outside the station and came across a row of parked taxis. I had to hold my phone and show the drivers the address to our hotel and if they could take us. They looked at my hands and three taxis in a row refused. So I had my son show the fourth taxi and he agreed. I loved Tokyo and I hope to go back someday.

I will never understand people who made a stink about this. Bro you are in THEIR country. Why are you arguing about the "complex cultural moral conundrums" with a person who simply doesn't give a single fuck about how you feel about this?

It was primarily the young white dudes while I was in the Marines who couldn't FATHOM not being able to access something

    parent
  • -3 points SickAssFoo323

Why a nation with a nasty history of imperialism protests catering to tourists from the same nations they themselves invaded/went to war with is something that should be studied. Like America, Europe and Australia, they get what they deserve. May they become overrun with immigrants everywhere.

    parent
  • -30 points tigerjuice888

Not a fan of the accent thing. Slippery slope especially for a black dude.

    parent
    3 points jasherer

    ok

    parent root
    3 points burgerpattybitch

You may think it’s odd but it is real and if you speak to native Japanese people in this accent they will understand you much easier and may even actually be able to communicate with you than if you spoke in proper english. Did it all the time when I went for the words I didn’t know

Just part of their sound system

    parent root
    7 points tigerjuice888

Interesting. I lived in Japan for 11 years and never saw or heard anyone try this.

    parent root
    9 points burgerpattybitch

I’m going to assume you’re being genuine, but I do find it a little bit hard to believe that you’ve lived in Japan for 11 years but don’t know that speaking English in a Japanese tongue would help people with Japanese tongues understand you better!

Especially since Japanese has so many loanwords and the average Japanese person that a foreigner would talk to (workers) seemingly know a lot more English than they let on (Not enough to have a conversation, but enough key words to communicate necessities)

    parent root
    1 points longboytheeternal

I’d suggest going onto Google translate right now and doing English > Japanese for the word DVD player and pressing the button that sounds it out. Perfect example of what you’re talking about
