I’m a Sergeant from South Florida with 11 years experience in a large city with most of those 11 years in drug investigations as a detective and sergeant. My family is possibly looking to relocate to the Birmingham area and I’d be looking for a job at a local PD. Any suggestions for the better agencies in terms of support of employees, salary, training, and equipment around the area?

Thanks in advance.

  • Look at years in service requirements for pension eligibility too. Bham is on its own pension plan with a quicker path to retirement for many. You may want to call around and do a deep dive on how your existing time in service counts in terms of credit.

  • Hoover PD is one of the better-resourced agencies. Vestavia and Mountain Brook as well. Birmingham needs more officers always, but the resources are not as robust.

  • If you want a challenge, bpd is a good choice. Hoover is very well funded, Homewood/vestavia Hills/mountain brook are the hoity toity rich people neighborhoods, and there are tons of small departments south of town, all pretty chill and good folks
