A few years ago I was in Panorama Bar on a Sunday evening during Massimiliano Pagliara’s release party. He was playing the 8PM–12 slot. I’ve been to a lot of parties, but I’ve honestly never seen anything like that one. At some point it stopped feeling like a DJ set and turned into something else entirely. Massimiliano was mixing, there were synths and keys involved by infamous Snax, a saxophone player joined(sadly i dont remember his name) in, and Ray Coloray was singing on top of it all. It wasn’t polished or perfect in a conventional sense but it was raw, emotional, and completely unhinged in the best way. People were even standing on the speakers. The room felt like it was about to lift off. just total surrender. That rare feeling when everyone in the room knows they’re inside something that won’t repeat itself. I still think about that night often. Not because it was the biggest or the hardest, but because it felt genuinely alive!!! Panorama at its most open, playful, and dangerous. Curious if anyone else was there and remembers it the same way.
loket aka tahl aka the sax player here!
This was probably the most epic and fulfilling day of my life musically. I can also attest to that feeling being shared amongst Snax and Massi and many others who were able to lock in to this iconic night!
Might be fun to give you a bit of context/behind the scenes set up here.
Massi came up with the idea of doing the "live" show over a year before this night - when we were recording his album 'See You in Paradise' (Snax and I are on the record as well!). This night in P Bar was a celebration of the release of the album, and we decided to surprise the audience with a live set for the last hour of Massi's 8pm-12am peak time Sunday slot. The three of us rehearsed it a few times leading up to the big night and new something special was brewing. Massi and Snax are also extremely sweet, pure, open hearted people, which I think came across on stage and helped bring that extra power to the performance.
I honestly nearly fainted after the first track we did, my adrenaline was through the roof. I'd been a dancer on the other side of the P Bar booth countless times, and it was surreal to be on the other side, especially as a saxophone player not a DJ (how I always imagined I might be back there).
One other fond memory I have of this whole affair was actually the sound check on Saturday before Klubnacht kicked off. I've noodled around musically in all manner of musical environment, but It was truly special to stand in the middle of P Bar doing sax warm ups with the sun setting and multiple totally unimpressed Berghain employees waiting impatiently for us to get on with it. Certified bergs experience.
Happy to throw some track IDs in the comments as well from the live portion!
