Honestly good on Huberman for addressing this. It really feels like one of those internet myths that just refuses to die.

Cold plunges are not stressful in the scary way people frame them. Yeah they are uncomfortable but that is literally the point. Most people are chasing the calm and mental clarity that comes after.

I have also noticed that the loudest critics are usually the ones who have never actually tried it. Meanwhile people who do cold plunges consistently talk about better mood and more resilience.

Obviously do not overdo it, but acting like women should not cold plunge at all feels way overblown. Short, controlled exposure works for a lot of people.

  • It’s 5 mins in cold, people do this on accident in winter lol.

  • Huberman studies vision.

So this is a subject about which he knows nothing.

  • Oddly, I learned that women shouldn’t do cold plunges from one of his podcast guests. He let it go at the time, but I guess it stuck with him.

  • Huberman has never had an original thought.

Not sure what you're getting at. He is DEBUNKING that claim, not making the claim.

Let me correct the headline for you. Susanna Soberg tries to debunk claims Women shouldn't be doing Cold Plunges because they spike Stress Hormone Soberg said cold plunges are totally fine for women.

Oh no! The dreaded down vote for exposing Huberman for the hack that he is.

    Does he need to?

One of the funniest moments was Huberman on Rogan explaining all the benefits of cold plunge… then Joe asked what temperature and how long he actually uses it, and Huberman had no idea. Peak credibility.

I hate to be a hater but the guy really does just regurgitate popular science. I guess that’s worthy of celebrity these days.

  • Why the fudge is this being posted again, people still not understanding the title or article - Huberman is all for women cold plunging and is debunking that theory that women shouldn’t cold plunge because it spikes their cortisol.

I’m not a huberman fan but FFS read the article you fucking morons

  • I agree, his clarification of the myths is needed. I’m not a woman, I am a man and I do it for old age arthritis which provides relief that nothing else does. I also do it for mood, controlling anxiety and the calm that ensues.

I have many women friends who I sincerely wish would do it, because I see in them so much anxiety and lack of calm. But I often get the deer in the headlights look, or even fear and the quick exclamation that “I could never do that“!!!

That is exactly the emotions that are causing the problem, and without trying it those women will never find out how good it could be for them.

Keep promoting that as a woman, And I’ll try to interject what I can as a man.

Yeah, I'm one of those women who can't bring themselves to do it. I understand why it's healthy, I think it would feel great after. Love the idea of it. I totally get it and think it's an awesome health hack.

But that shock of severe cold would register in my brain as a kind of abuse. I think a cold plunge would plunge me straight into severe "arctic winter" level S.A.D. unfortunately lol.

I just really, really hate the cold.

I tried for a while, am a woman. I found that really cold water aggravates my endometriosis and ankle joint issues. I’d get like flu like symptoms for 24 hours because my immune system hyper responded to it. I also have inappropriate sinus tachycardia I didn’t know about at that time, so am probably just one of the people with an electrical heart thing that can’t do it regularly. I’m on meds now to regulate it so I may ask my doctor if it’s safe now.

I do find that just a cold shower gives me similar benefits. I’ll go from super hot to lukewarm to cool and still feel that “shock” and experience the mood benefits. You don’t have to be in full ice or a polar swimmer, you can experiment with tolerable to you temp ranges and still experience benefits. Also, if it’s not your thing and you’ve tried it that’s ok too! What’s life changing for one person can be meh for someone else.

I get that and hear you. Most of my women friends say the same.

If you can slowly acclimate, the act of doing it can change your perspective, it’s hard but I’ve also seen women achieve a calmer state in the cold realizing the health and mental benefits.

I started with that same thought, i was in a dire mental state of complex grief. This was the main “therapy” that quelled the amygdala training of a lifetime. The hardest thing I want to do everyday 😁🤠

I didn’t. But my own personal experience is important and sharing it may help people so i do. If it doesn’t apply to your experience then ignore mine or enjoy the story. That’s up to you.
