Im going to assume that coat is some sort of wool and wool can actually be spun to be really breathable. I have some wool pants that i wear on the rainy days of renaissance faires in the PNW and all those are happen June through September. Quality wool is versatile and that coat looks Quality.
We've reached 35+ several years in a row, we hit 110F this summer. I travel lots, which wouldn't mean anything since travel and your personal experiences/perceived senses have nothing to do with written records. Lmao
It is freaking beautiful. And I would not consider myself a fashion connoisseur at all, I never notice clothing, but that coat is so nice and looks really well made, like quality.
I’ve never seen regalia that wasn’t extremely high quality and beautifully, intricately crafted. I’m not exactly sure if it’s appropriate to call the Santa coat “regalia” but still, the principle still stands.
Magic. They might be old enough to "know" but the magic of the season gets you, man. It reminds me of the moment a few years ago me and my sister (both in our 40s lol) saw a mall Santa from a distance and waved excitedly. When he waved back we were giddy. I look at her and she's tearing up, just like me. 🥲
We're not churchy, we don't do gift, don't celebrate the occasion but THAT'S SANTA! 🤗
I love this story, thank you for sharing :) I’m also in my 40’s and didn’t grow up with Christmas and we make sure that we maintain the magic for the kids, but it’s also just a lil bit for me because the whole season has such a nice feeling associated with it. Doesn’t cost anything to be kind!
Isn't the point of a pow wow a celebration of native culture and religious beliefs? I don't see how Santa Claus, a symbol of the Christian Christmas holiday, fits in there.
Many indigenous peoples in Canada have a Christian or Catholic background. It's not uncommon at all, especially somewhere like Alberta. There's an annual pilgrimage at Lac St. Anne there that has thousands of attendees, a large portion of which are indigenous. Christianity and Catholicism have both been deeply engraved in indigenous communities for hundreds of years since the early days of colonization.
There are probably a lot of biracial kids and they get to celebrate both sides of who they are at the same time.
I am Irish Italian American and as a kid I got to do both Santa and the Bufana and I thought it was so cool that I got to go ask both Santa and the Bafana for gifts. I got gfts for Christmas qnd the Epipany.
You can celebrate more than one culture at a time.
Also at one point so many white women were running away to live with with native men they actually made it illegal.
Question so if you were a white women in the 1700's and you noticed that the local native tribe allowed women to, I don't know, wear comfortable clothing and have opinions and make decisions in the tribe what would you be doing.
Also all the rape stuff.
There is also unfortunately a reason that blood quantum is a thing.
We kind of only get the big parts of consumerism like disney land, Santa Claus and Wal-Mart. Its not a cultural thing, always felt it a bit odd but hey a diluted piece of the american pie tastes sweet when ya didnt know you were gonna get a slice.
Who gives a fuck, it's a dope outfit. Let people do what they want. Christmas has grown far beyond the christian tradition. Excuse the cliche, but gatekeeping culture is not in the Christmas spirit.
Completely atrocious and still long way to go on reconciliation. However at least we’ve got started the truth stage unlike the US. Also not to split hairs but the Crown and the Church also hold lots of blame for this.
It is the UK, and not the Canadian government, who is largely responsible for the long history of atrocities against our tribes and cultures. The worst of the genocide that took place, took place under the governance of the UK and US governments, as throughout most of those efforts, Canada was not an independent and free governing nation.
That isn't to say I absolve our government of any guilt, people as recent as my grandmother were victims of their re-education efforts. Even today the Canadian government still tries to steal from the land and culture of our cousin and sibling tribes. There are sins to be repented by the government of Canada.
But not enough people are demanding that the colonial powers reconcile for what they've done to us.
I really love that coat! Beats all heck out of those plain red suits you usually see! Couldn't see much of the rest of his outfit but what was glimpsed also looked rad!
Culture is designed to be shared and appreciated. Cultures naturally merge and blend together over time. Everything every culture has today, was once individual elements of smaller cultures or societies that came before.
If you're joining in and celebrating other people's cultures that's not appropriation. It's only appropriation if you co-opt part of their culture and portray it as part of your identity.
Aw, did you throw a violent, threatening tantrum in my notifications just to get your comment removed? Imagine lacking so much emotional regulation over such a non-argument.
If anyone ever came to me and said "I've got an idea for a new character I want to portray, I call him PowWow Santa," I would think to myself "Holy shit, this is gonna be the most racist thing I've ever seen anyone do," regardless of the race of that person.
To be clear, I am in no way calling the dude in this video or any of his actions racist, I think it's rad and adorable, I'm just trying to point out that PowWow Santa sounds like something you'd see in a Christmas special in the 1950's.
Out of curiosity, what would you deem a better name? Maybe it's because I've been to pow wows my whole life, but I don't find it racist in the least. He's Santa at a pow wow, so it seems to be a fitting title
Like I said, I don't think anything about what this guy is doing is racist, name included, I understand that powwows are just a part of indigenous culture. Idk, maybe I just see too many racist ass rednecks and hear their dumb jokes too often.
God damn I don't know how many times and how clearly I gotta say that that is not the case. I was just saying that if a random person told me they wanted to show me a character called Powwow Santa, I would have concerns that it would be a shitty racist caricature. But, as I said below, the problem could be that I'm stuck in a region where there are a higher than average (even for the US) number of racist dumbasses, so it's possible I have too negative of an outlook on others.
What culture is being appropriated? They're Canadian. They're closer to the North Pole than you are. Canada also celebrates Christmas, not sure if you heard
So what culture is being appropriated? He's a native man in native regalia, and a Canadian man celebrating Christmas. Do you culturally appropriate every year? Which culture owns Santa? Because the version of him we celebrate was coined by Coca Cola

I remember seeing this on the news
Just looked it up and it was from the Samson Cree Nation Pow Wow in Maskwacis, Ab
In AUGUST (8th - 10th)
Poor Santa 😰
AUGUST
Dudes gonna need to be wrung out after that.
Right?
I mean it's Alberta so it doesn't get THAT hot
But definitely too hot for that coat 😰
Im going to assume that coat is some sort of wool and wool can actually be spun to be really breathable. I have some wool pants that i wear on the rainy days of renaissance faires in the PNW and all those are happen June through September. Quality wool is versatile and that coat looks Quality.
Alberta gets REALLY hot, some of the highest temperatures in North America when summer hits. Idk who told you otherwise😭💀
Uhhhh I live here
"Highest temps in North America
Albertas avg temp in summer is 21 - 25°C ... If you think that's some of the highest temps in North America you really need to travel a bit more 😉
We've reached 35+ several years in a row, we hit 110F this summer. I travel lots, which wouldn't mean anything since travel and your personal experiences/perceived senses have nothing to do with written records. Lmao
Alberta...Canada?
Cause if you're talking about Alberta CANADA (where this took place) you really need to do a little research 😅
Have someone read and explain this to you
The last time ANYPLACE in Alberta CANADA hit temps over 110 was August 3 1984
But you're so well traveled you should know this right?
JFC 🤣
Someone's fussy
Oh good comeback 😅
Guess that's your way of telling me you have absolutely NOTHING
🍻
So it's "clear that I'm unhinged & not worth reasoning with" huh?
Yeah ... I got notification of that before either the you or the mods deleted it. 🤣
I'm still waiting for you to provide proof that Alberta has "hit 35+ several years in a row" & "hit 110 this summer"
I showed you evidence that that didn't happen.. You came back with NOTHING
& I'm "unhinged" & "not worth reasoning with"?
🤣
Wow
You see the Aussie Santa's lmao
Yes, Summer Solistice time in the land downunder.
I love his coat!!
Nice coat
It is freaking beautiful. And I would not consider myself a fashion connoisseur at all, I never notice clothing, but that coat is so nice and looks really well made, like quality.

Agreed. It’s just gorgeous!
I’d wear the heck outta it pretty much everyday for the rest of my life except for the summer
I’d love a robe like that.
Amazing! That's Santa! Look at how excited those sweet kids are! ❤️❤️❤️
I teared up at how stoked those kids were, just spreading happiness

It’s been said a couple times already but that coat is 🔥🔥
Classiest Santa I've ever seen! That coat is stunning!!
Now that's how you bring 2 cultures together.
Is it though?
Isn't the point of a pow wow a celebration of native culture and religious beliefs? I don't see how Santa Claus, a symbol of the Christian Christmas holiday, fits in there.

Sure...but simultaneously?
Also: how do you know there are a lot of biracial kids at a pow-wow? That seems like some sort of weird stereotyping of Native Americans.
And "Irish Italian American" is not biracial. It might be multi-national, or multi-cultural, but Irish and Italian people are both Caucasian.
It's the US and we like people here like sex.
Also at one point so many white women were running away to live with with native men they actually made it illegal.

There is also unfortunately a reason that blood quantum is a thing.
Also my late fiancé was biracial native American.
We kind of only get the big parts of consumerism like disney land, Santa Claus and Wal-Mart. Its not a cultural thing, always felt it a bit odd but hey a diluted piece of the american pie tastes sweet when ya didnt know you were gonna get a slice.

This is Santa. I don’t know what op is talking about. This man is clearly from the North Pole.
That’s the best coat I will ever see in my entire life

So cool and love that coat
This is so fricken cool. I love all of this.
♡
He’s absolutely badass and so was that pow wow.
I have a new crush. This is fabulous!
My inner child said “well yeah of course! Santa wants to make every kid feel safe and seen, so changes his appearance to represent their culture.”
What the Canadian and US governments did to the indigenous peoples was atrocious. Genocide and torture
Completely atrocious and still long way to go on reconciliation. However at least we’ve got started the truth stage unlike the US. Also not to split hairs but the Crown and the Church also hold lots of blame for this.

religion was definitely a big part of western colonialism, so that's not wrong
Sure. Relevant how?
They are not afroamerican, so not relevant /s

I have mixed feelings about this. I appreciate what he is doing, but we have had our traditions whitewashed enough.
Wonder what he rides in on and with

Heck yeah syncretism! 🥳
Lore accurate Santa coat
Literally! Do people know where the North Pole is? Idk who downvoted you lmao
My favorite Santa so far

Cultural appropriation? No?

video illustrating cultural appropriation
He's native, what's culturally insensitive about a native person wearing native regalia?
… the PowWow safe….
I understand the goth girls now.
?
I wonder if this is considered a positive thing in my area? Surely not all native american's do this?
Why would Santa be a negative thing in your area? Where did anyone say all natives do this? It's one guy in one community, people aren't a monolith
Great job being unhelpful 👍👌

I asked you a question? I'm not trying to be helpful, I'm asking you to be. Great job
This is truly what made America great. The blending of beliefs, culture and heritage The Great American Melting Pot.
Hey, this video isn't from America. I don't know if you could tell by the title or anything.
Loving that coat of his. Probably a little too plush and warm for Texas however.
while this is cute it's also kind of troubling
How is this troubling...?
Is this … cultural … appropriation uno reverse?
Santa is celebrated in North America, I don't know if you knew this

Santa dunked some "sugar tablets ". Little does he know it's pure MDMA and he about to find out
Do they not believe in dentists?
Proving once and for all that cultural appropriation is fucking sick.
Who is appropriating any culture here?
I'm just asking the question everybody is too afraid to ask: Does PowWow Santa bring fire water?
?
Cultural appropriation. But cool.
What culture is being appropriated? They're Canadian. They're closer to the North Pole than you are. Canada also celebrates Christmas, not sure if you heard
I'm both Canadian and native. Idiot. Santa isn't a traditional part of native culture.
