And put in an email address asking the finder to email that woman's children and let them know where she'd been. I'll bet that would give them a thrill.
That's why you're supposed to use coloured glass when you do a message in a bottle.
And maybe use iron-gall ink (very easy to make) on birchbark, vellum, parchment, or even leather (not quite as easy to make, but any history club will know someone who can get the cutoff bits for you) so it has a chance at sea.
I envisage a scene out of a terrible BBC sitcom, where someone opens it to shake the message out, reads it, then slow pans to their companion and then they both look down at the ground.
The first thing people do when they open a drift bottle is turn it upside down to get the message out. This way the ash got widespread after the first opening. Then after they read the message they replaced it with sand
But its just fake. Paper is to clean. It should be dirty if it was in the same bottle with ash
I found a football with messages written on it washed up here on Ireland's west coast. It had washed up in Scotland and been written on and also England. I kicked it back in. I also found a message in a bottle before
Yeah sure Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, Nestlé and other megacorps are responsible for thousands of tonnes of plastic pollution per year but this random brit with a football killed all the turtles
My dad was composted (terramated) when he passed last year and I've got burlap sacks with his soil that I plan to distribute in various places, one being the water. I'm just going to dump it in, no need to create extra trash on the water.
whoa I'd never heard of that, but thank you for posting this comment, because that's exactly what I'd want for myself. I think the idea of nurturing life and doing something positive for the environment after death is really beautiful, especially because feels like a way for someone to live on with their loved ones even after they're gone.
I had heard of it but I didn't know my dad knew what it was until one afternoon I was wheeling him into his dialysis clinic and he told me he wanted to be composted. Then his social worker called me not long after and told me my dad wanted to go on hospice but didn't know how to tell me. I miss him every day but it also comforts me to know he's still here, just in a different form, and the things that once gave him life will be able to bring life to other things on this planet.
Maybe I'm just a grumpy old man but all I see is the hope that another piece of garbage, which is what a glass bottle in the ocean is floats around the entire world.
This is litter. A form of pollution. Sentimental pollution... but pollution all the same. And turning it into front page Reddit material will do nothing more than convince others to do the same.
not at all amazed, it would be illegal for me to do anything with it, except call the police (Denmark). by law this is considered the same as a corpse or parts of a corpse. it would totally ruin my day finding something like this.
This is in r/BeAmazed but if you found this washed up on Brighton Beach I'm not amazed it traveled the from the UK. Wake me when you see it washed up in Australia or South Africa. Though I wouldn't beleve it wasn't carried, so in fact just nevermind.
The cremated part shoud be in a little baggie or something. I'd be kind of upset if I found a message in a bottle, went to read it, and then realized that the powder coating the paper in my hands was a cremated person...
I found ashes in a bottle 2 months ago. It was in a wine bottle, there was a rolled up dollar bill, a rolled up sandwich bag with white powder, and a rolled up note. I didn’t know what was in the bottle at first. My gf unrolled the bag with the powder and thought it might be drugs. I then unrolled the note and it was a heartfelt note of the guys mom who had set this bottle adrift. It’s so sad and he died so young, he was only 23. He also had passed in 2015 but she just set this bottle adrift in 2025, from Vancouver Island Canada.
We’re on a rocky island, if the bottle had hit the shore with the wind and waves it would have surely smashed. It had an area on the back of the note to write the date and location it was found. There was noting on the outside to indicate it contained remains, it was literally a normal 750mL wine bottle with a cork.
I’m not entirely sure how I feel about finding someone’s remains in a bottle. I hope it’s not a trendy thing that catches on. The surprise from “Oooo a message in a bottle with money!” to finding someone’s remains was a weird feeling. And if you’re going to do it, use waterproof paper or seal the paper in a bag, because it’s going to get damp. This note was already disintegrating. Anyways we added our location and set him back out to sea and I hope he travels as long as he can.
Edit to add: I looked up his obituary online when we found the bottle, as I tried to find his mom to let her know he’s safe and had stopped at our island. RIP Dalton.
This reminded me of something similar. I once found a battered postcard sealed in plastic washed up on a beach in Portugal. It had dates and short notes written in different handwriting, like people kept adding where they found it. Last entry was from somewhere in northern France. I added the location and the day, sealed it back up, and tossed it into the waves again. No idea where it went next, but it felt like being part of a quiet little relay across the ocean.
The message is touching, but the idea behind it is not how the sea actually works. A glass bottle placed in the ocean is very unlikely to “travel the world.” Glass is heavy, and most bottles sink, break, or wash back onto nearby shores fairly quickly. pretty sure op or bbc news foound the bottle in a nearby UK shore and not accross the world.
We found a letter n a bottle on a remote island in Alaska a few years ago. We got excited to read a message from a foreign land describing the perils of being shipwrecked.
When we opened it the letter was written by a couple from California that was on a cruise and had put the bottle in the ocean about two miles from the island where we found it 😂.
Well that’s a really bad way to preserve the ashes. Cause the moment some one sees it they will turn the bottle to get the message only to have a terrible realisation of what they just did.
I've found two messages in bottles growing up, one around the Columbia River Delta and the other in Puget Sound. I couldn't read most of the first one but I could read the country of origin & saw that it came from Ireland in the 90s. The second one was from Alaska which was less exciting lol. I grew up around Puget Sound and always wanted to find one with contact info to let them know where it wound up.
As a former resident of Oldham England, the best thing you can do is ensure it does not return there (shouldn’t be hard as we are nowhere near the sea or a deep river)

To get the paper out someone is sure to shake it and dump all the ashes.
You could roll it the other way so you can read it through the bottle
And probably glue the paper on the inside so it doesn't move. Glue the cork as well. I don't think mum needs the fresh air anymore....
Message in a Bottle, Accidentally Upgraded to Urn
Sending an SOS to the world.
I hope that someone gets my
mother in a bottle
Yeah (also alternately whoa)
Mum in a bottle
And put in an email address asking the finder to email that woman's children and let them know where she'd been. I'll bet that would give them a thrill.
Straight to spam
The bottle has been travelling around before there was internet. This was how people used to communicate back in the days.
How's she gonna see though?
Out the bottom.
Don't worry she wasn't getting any of that living in Oldham anyway
Then she wouldn’t be able to see out of the bottle 🙄
Why couldn’t she see out the bottom of the bottle? Paper rolled ks an open ended cylinder.
Ok great so now she’s spending eternity looking at fish heads and fins through a fish eye lense. Just send her to hell already!
Yeah, she’ll be so dizzy and nauseous
Won't the sun not be more likely to wither away the text?
That's why you're supposed to use coloured glass when you do a message in a bottle.
And maybe use iron-gall ink (very easy to make) on birchbark, vellum, parchment, or even leather (not quite as easy to make, but any history club will know someone who can get the cutoff bits for you) so it has a chance at sea.
If the bottle spends enough time at sea to land in a different country, you won't be able to read anything through it
and who says the person who finds it can read English
If they exposed the ink like that most likely the UV rays and heat from the sun would discolor or make the ink disappear.
“Oops!” throws her back in with sand
Maybe it was a bottle of ashes inside a bottle with a paper
Yo, dawg...
Put the ashes in a ziplock bag so they don't get dumped.
Someone will definitely try to snort it
Bruh, you got OD snorting my mom!
Not a big deal. She just found her right destination.
Maybe that’s the point.
Next stop: Bora Bora, hope she packed sunscreen
She already maxed out her burning capabilities. She's good for sunscreen.
That's a burn
Na, I think she still got some fuel left in her
She’s already burned to a crisp, sunscreen is useless at this point.
https://youtu.be/8SA2c_LUUlI?si=BGOkTZjek-75Jb0a
Her moms gonna be stuck in one of the big Garbage patch in the pacific for hundreds of years to come
That’s not much different to Oldham itself tbh she’ll probably feel at home
Straight to the Pacific garbage patch
A hilariously sad potential outcome.
Reported for littering - Oldham council will be in touch with your fixed penalty notice /s
Don't think of it as a garbage patch.
It's the world's newest continent!
Ehhh I hear that place is trash.
It’s actually not solid chunk of trash, it’s area of water with uncomfortable density of trash
You know there's a North Atlantic garbage patch, right?
I envisage a scene out of a terrible BBC sitcom, where someone opens it to shake the message out, reads it, then slow pans to their companion and then they both look down at the ground.
Canned laughter erupts
Michael Scott visits the beach
That’s not all of her..
She was only 4ft3 mate

But its just fake. Paper is to clean. It should be dirty if it was in the same bottle with ash
I assumed the person posting this is the one who wrote the note. The papers not been put in yet.
The person posting is just a karmafarmer. It literally says BBC in the upper left.
Oh. Damn you are right
I found a football with messages written on it washed up here on Ireland's west coast. It had washed up in Scotland and been written on and also England. I kicked it back in. I also found a message in a bottle before
And that, my child, is why the ocean is full of microplastics
Ye this fkin guy from ireland killed all the turtles. He even admited it.
No, I think the ocean is full of microplastics for different, larger reasons.
Yeah sure Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, Nestlé and other megacorps are responsible for thousands of tonnes of plastic pollution per year but this random brit with a football killed all the turtles
It actually tires. But also that bottle is glass.
I was really hoping you were going to end your story with “then I found it again in Hawaii while I was on vacation.”
I want a tracker on the bottle.
an airtag /s
Seatag obv.
why /s ?
Airtags use other Apple devices, mainly iPhones, to determine their current position. At sea it has no such capabilities.
So they can know where it goes.
Tbf... you could just scatter the ashes in the sea??
Saves throwing a bottle and a bit of paper in there.
And she would get everywhere without being picked up.
Won't someone think of the likes on social media.
The lost potential has me in a tizzy.
My dad was composted (terramated) when he passed last year and I've got burlap sacks with his soil that I plan to distribute in various places, one being the water. I'm just going to dump it in, no need to create extra trash on the water.

How’s this supposed to make me feel amazed?
It's an account with two million karma it knows what its doing
Well... The jokes in the comments here had me amazed
For god's sake..get that woman some sunscreen. She looks completely burnt...
That paper is supremely clean for “travelling the world”
It's likely when they sent it off initially.
Or it just hasn’t gone anywhere yet besides someone’s camera roll.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/czxy20nx2exo
She was just a tiny person with a match when they gathered on the beach.
Almost like it's been stored in some sort of sealed vessel
Guess it’s got frequent flyer status and a good skincare routine
Maybe I'm just a grumpy old man but all I see is the hope that another piece of garbage, which is what a glass bottle in the ocean is floats around the entire world.

She couldn’t do better than a hastily written message on a sheet of torn out notebook paper?
This is practically calligraphy for Oldham
If it was legit, sure.
That is so cool, until that bottle ends up in the trash piles floating at sea.
-1 Turtle 🐢
not at all amazed, it would be illegal for me to do anything with it, except call the police (Denmark). by law this is considered the same as a corpse or parts of a corpse. it would totally ruin my day finding something like this.
Now I’m weirdly invested in this bottle
Ultimate game of hide and seek
Bro bottled his mum
Rumour has it just her left thigh is travelling the world
Fake
17k upvotes on this literal garbage?
Good Lord. When I die, I hope no one turns me into litter.
Isn’t this just spreading ashes with extra steps?
And by steps I mean littering.
Oldham mentioned!!
Write the location and date of where you found it on the backside so that the person at the next destination knows the places she's visited.
Its 1/60th of her mom
Ahh yes, pointlessly littering the ocean. Just what our planet needs.
And she should be fined for littering.
The bottle was put in the sea in Skegness to "see where she ends up" ... the bottle was found on the same beach 12 hours later
Imagine if she was meant to go to heaven but now her soul is damned to forever be trapped in the endless void of ocean. Just going back and forth.
Litter bug. (Throws it away)... (I cant read)
Humans sure love any excuse to litter…
it's cool and sweet , but for environment it's not
Litter...?
Quit littering.
Thats glass and paper.. not plastic
It's fine to throw paper and glass in the sea?
Remind me again... what are all those beer bottles and fast food wrappers along the highway called?
I believe it is called "décor"
Trash is trash.
Cool then recycle it. The ocean doesn't want your trash
That’s probably the only chance ill get to do that too
This is in r/BeAmazed but if you found this washed up on Brighton Beach I'm not amazed it traveled the from the UK. Wake me when you see it washed up in Australia or South Africa. Though I wouldn't beleve it wasn't carried, so in fact just nevermind.
If your spirit was actually tied to your ashes, being stuck in a bottle at sea sounds like turbo hell
Couldn’t bother to take her out while she was alive so let’s shove her in a bottle and get internet points
Me mum
Write the date somewere
Did she get her bottle license
My dad found a bottle like this during his honeymoon and was super excited to read what it said. It said: "you will die of cancer".
Imagine this ends up on the shores of North Sentinel Island.
The cremated part shoud be in a little baggie or something. I'd be kind of upset if I found a message in a bottle, went to read it, and then realized that the powder coating the paper in my hands was a cremated person...
His mum can fit in that? Must be a tiny mum.
Man I need a bottle made of something that degrades in a few years and have this done to me. Any ideas?
Imagine if that part of the ash is just her mums toe or something. Funny to think about a toe travelling the world
Hopefully she doesn't end up in Philadelphia.
In two weeks it'll land in Philadelphia and it's over.
I wouldn’t put my faith in strangers to either not dump the ashes by accident or throw out the bottle thinking it was litter.
Imagine someone opens it and tilts the bottle upside down to get the paper piece, spilling all the ashes
From the amount I'd say that's her leg travelling the world
so i have to get your mum on my fingers first before realizing what i just did after getting the letter out of the bottle and reading it?
really?
OP, you should probably get some people to translate into other languages for you
Trying to make it impossible for Sam and Dean to deal with those remains if mum gets angry about being tossed in the sea…
Cool but poorly executed if they are just gonna stuff that paper in there lol. Write the message on the bottle
r/untrustworthypoptarts
I hope a whale eats it
If someone throws this bottle into the ocean, someone else will find it on the nearest beach three days later. And that’s how an endless cycle begins.
Should write in chinese as well

where you found it `?
not my proudest

Well of course it will it's written only in english

And scoop up some sand promptly after.
Lol people are gonna have to keep opening it to read it. It's gonna get loose from someone not closing it right and get water inside
Ashes? Nah more looks like sands from the beach
I mean if you throw something into the sea the only place it's going to end up is right back on shore.
I know it's evil AF but uhm...: Take the ash out and put some sand in.
It will travel around the world, if it doesn’t end up in the trash.
r/untrustworthypoptarts
If I had an upcoming flight I'd take it with me and throw it out in the ocean there.
For a second I thought it was written by someone from my country (here "Cara" is slang for "dude")
Write where you are on the back so others can see where she’s gone!
Man arrested for littering....
I just add a half cig, she did like to smoke. Wright😊👍🏻
put a URL on there with a site so people can show where it's been.
also could ask people to bring it to new places and throw it in the sea there.
Oh no the ocean is full of trash. Yet they're the ones making that.
Attach the note to the lid, otherwise it's just gonna get dumped out
I've found two messages in bottles growing up, one around the Columbia River Delta and the other in Puget Sound. Sorry but.. how could your dad marry a bottle?.. ask for my friend
As a former resident of Oldham England, the best thing you can do is ensure it does not return there (shouldn’t be hard as we are nowhere near the sea or a deep river)
Let it land in America, it'll be pissed in
If you see this bottle make sure to clean up our ocean of all this trash
I'm sure all these posters complaining about littering are going to be composted and not cremated (aka burned) or buried (littering with more steps!)
Also, I'm sure none of them have ever once thrown away anything at all!
Sorry but if I see this I’m throwing the ashes in the ocean and recycling the bottle.
This is littering.
Write your country in the back of the paper if you found it.
Sorry, stranger.
But I don't litter.
It’s gonna real a couple hundred meter down river …
They should write down the date to keep track of how long it’s been traveling.
If you haven't sent it out yet, use archival spray on the letter so that it lasts longer and it won't get as sun bleached as fast!
People should write where and when they found it to track her journey
White ppl i swear
It seem she didn't thought what would happen if someone who doesn't speak English picks it up.
In before someone starts complaining about littering the ocean
My mom was cremated and I can tell you a human body generates a lot more ash than that
Whoever's reading this now THOROUGHLY regretting racking up a line before checking the receipt.
i hope this is only relative dude sent for swimmimg
Littering
❤️
Where was it found?
Should have put the ash in a ziplock bag.
Sad reality of most people this is their opportunity to see the world
Sorry, I'm not going to litter so If I meet your mum, she's going to the bin
[removed]
Use UV light resistant ink, otherwise itd get bleached in a weeks time.
I would pee in it
Place the ashes in a small bottle inside the glass bottle
