Articulated very well. This is the family side of nascar showing.. Bubba already lost enough position.. it was the right thing to do as a Toyota brand rivalry team to do to help. Sportsmanship in short
Sports leagues themselves aren't publicly traded. You can't buy, like, NBA stock. It is called stock car racing so I can see where the confusion could happen.
As the other person just commented, other leagues are collectively owned by the teams so while theyre competitors, they all have a common interest (usually to benefit the owners but yeah). Naturally, I thought NASCAR would have been owned by all the racing teams that make it up.
It’s still completely different. The NBA, NFL and MLB are all collectively owned by the team owners. NASCAR is owned by a family in Florida. It changes the motivations of the organization dramatically.
I don’t follow NASCAR or any other racing, but from reading the article and the amounts of money involved.. this news seems like it’s huge and absolute game changer for everyone
It's also important to remember these things have happened in motorsport and their rivals team has gone out of their way to help, sometimes they don't, which is valid in a competitive situation but it's lovely when they do help
The media likes to dramatise sport, but a true sportsman wants everyone to compete so they can show that even though they helped someone else they are as skilled as they are
Stirling Moss was a good example of this, his main competitor in Formula 1 in 1958 was Mike Hawthorne. Hawthorne had an incident during the race in Portugal and push started his car after it cut out, which the F1 rules states was illegal to do on track. After the race Moss went to the stewards and argued that because Hawthorne was off the track when he did this he didn't breach the rules as the rule specifically stated it couldn't be done "on track", and Hawthorne was next to the track. Hawthorne went on to win the championship that year, by one point iirc, Sterling Moss would have won otherwise. Moss never did win the championship, but he's better remembered than Mike Hawthorne, because of who Moss was as a person
They also want to get him out their box, and he needs a tire to do that. Their man could need to pit, so clearing the area of a racer who won’t win now is good strategy too.
Also it blocks their pit if he's stuck and is a safety concern, no idea what the race situation was either if they were trying to avoid a stoppage, but easiest thing is just get the damn tire back on and get bubba out asap.
Ok let me try, this was the lifetime enemy team of the driver, mortal enemies, he stole the teams wife, all of them and they swore revenge even if it was the last thing they were going to do, but the driver as he stopped gave them the “im very sorry” look and power of friendship prevailed. They decided to, as a team, forgive him and put his wheel back on and give him the “we forgive you” thumbs up. He won the championship and gave them the trophy as a thank you and lived happily ever after.
He went on to get 5th in the race, knocking Brisco out of playoff contention.. it led to the pit chief getting fired and blacklisted from working in NASCAR basically ever again
legit they needed to get that car out of their pit box if anything for safety reasons. and pitting him wouldn't get them a penalty, it's a kinda win win to put that tire back on.
I read afterwards that crew chief Bootie Barker knew that they'd get penalized for pitting out of box but he wanted to try to get the tire back on the car so Bubba wasn't running that lap on 3 wheels & damaging the underside & the splitter on the front of the car
This and Chase Briscos makes me think no one is allowed to use their real names in Nascar because what the hell are these names. What's next? Brandon Tyre? Bubba Tea?
the penalty for pitting out of the box (drive thru/end of line if under caution) is much less than losing a wheel on track/leaving with out, which is a crew chief suspension next race
What happens if they just throw that shit in reverse back to their pit? I'm guessing a worse penalty than the lap of shame? Because at that point I'd probably still do it.
That does happen from time to time; sometimes a driver will leave too early & a mono lug doesn't get tightened all the way but that usually happens immediately after leaving their pit
Bubba might have been too far away for that
"Lap of shame" 🤣
I like that...might have to borrow that in the future 🤣
If he had left pit road, the penalty would have been him being parked for 2 laps and 2 of his crew members getting a 2-race suspension. The penalty he got was just a pass through penalty, so much less severe.
Tires being unsecured and coming off have to be a pretty major penalty because there have been multiple instances (though it hasn't happened in a long time) of a tire coming off a car on track and killing spectators.
No there are Fords, Chevys and Toyotas and while different teams are of the same brand they will sometimes band together so they can beat the other brands
who is not a teammate but IS a fellow Toyota driver
Well, not a direct teammates, but Bubba Wallace's car owner, Denny Hamlin, drives for that team -- JGR. They definitely have an alliance and IIRC it was later revealed they had that contingency worked out in advance, but they just weren't practiced with it yet. The idea being that stopping in an allied box and getting the "pitting outside of your box" penalty was much less severe than the penalty for leaving pit road without a tire, which has very strict consequences up to and including ejection of crew for a race. It happened a few more times after this, with crews responding faster each time.
It's odd it was still legal. It would never happen (maybe if a Red Bull pulled into the junior team's pit box), but in F1 and probably other FIA-governed series, this almost certainly would be considered "receiving outside assistance" and a disqualification. Usually the rule is put into effect when a driver gets stuck somewhere and requires a push from the race marshalls to get going, but I think this would have to qualify as well.
Edit: There was some drama a few years ago when a driver was looking closely at another team's car and touched it after a race and was fined, so there's a chance the responding team would get a fine as well. Weird how different series in basically the same sport have such different rules.
Do other team help out opponent like this. No way. Unless it's like a celeb charity race or something. In a competition its not gonna happen. Same toyota team makes sense
Well maybe not in instances like this but I have seen other teams help out opposing drivers when it comes to safety ie rushing to put out fires or pulling drivers out of cars that are filled with smoke
When it comes to the pit, no one wants chaos there because there's humans really close to cars. The car already lost time, and is currently blocking the box. They haven't cost the blocked team any time, putting on a wheel doesn't use any limited resources, so might as well slap the wheel back on to clear the pit. Also helps that both teams share a manufacturer.
Nah, they'd still help. They'd just do it knowing that the guy is getting penalized. Getting the wheel back on is a safety thing and they don't want a safety issue in their pit.
Yeah if you watch the clip again the mechanic was trying to tighten the wheel down but the lifter dropped the car back down and before the wheel could be tightened and torqued he was already rolling out. It’s not the drivers fault they’re trained to take off as soon as the car is dropped back down. It was poor communication/coordination within the pit crew
Funnily enough, I’ve actually had the wheel fall off my car because my family mechanic of 20+ years had a teenage nephew working in the shop who didn’t roque it back on after a brake job. I haven’t been back since…
Thank you for confirming the music was garbage. I tend to have different music tastes than most people (soundtracks/instrumental are my thing) - so I was wondering if it was just me... but man that music was horrid.
Hating this song ended up being the only real take away from the post that I'll leave with. Christ that was atrocious to hear, then some car shit also happened or whatever. Fuck that song sucks.
I mean, there weren't a whole lot of other options. Don't want your pit blocked for your driver that may need it as they come around the bend for any reason
Imagine you're serving dinner to your family, everybody has their plate of food, and you're getting ready to sit down. All of a sudden somebody else sits at the table and is demanding food immediately, what's going on? What do they want? You're not prepared at all. That's what's happening here. You know you're supposedly to put food on this plate but you don't know what food or what to do and you were not prepared for this to happen at all. This has happened like three times over the past few seasons to clarify how rare something like this is.
This was my immediate cynical thought. There’s no kindness here, just motivated self interest. I am however vaguely disappointed to find someone else point it out when most people didn’t, so take my downvote.
No they are made out of aluminum and meant to be easy to carry and tossed under cars. It is also way harder to pump since it only takes one pump to elevate the car.
Yea I saw a video about them before, the crew has to basically jump and put all their weight onto the jack lever in order to raise it but all that force and the hydraulics of it lift the car to a height for the wheels in an instant
"You could probably come and get some but uhh I don't think nascar would think much of you going out there with ice cream you're having a hard enough time staying on the track as it is."
"While we're still under a caution, I want you to go back out on that track and hit the pace car... Because you've hit every other damm thing out there, I want you to be perfect!"

That's Bubba Wallace
The pit he stopped in was Chase Briscos who is not a teammate but IS a fellow Toyota driver
Wallace was penalized for pitting out of box
Articulated very well. This is the family side of nascar showing.. Bubba already lost enough position.. it was the right thing to do as a Toyota brand rivalry team to do to help. Sportsmanship in short
Yeah..
Considering what's been going on in Nascar the last couple of months it's a good reminder that good things do happen ...
Once in a while 😉
Very happy with todays verdict.
What happend?

TIL NASCAR is privately owned lol.

As the other person just commented, other leagues are collectively owned by the teams so while theyre competitors, they all have a common interest (usually to benefit the owners but yeah). Naturally, I thought NASCAR would have been owned by all the racing teams that make it up.
This also explains why we don't have relegations or promotions, right?
Do the teams have voting power? Veto power? Can they organize? Is that what the lawsuit was about?
It’s still completely different. The NBA, NFL and MLB are all collectively owned by the team owners. NASCAR is owned by a family in Florida. It changes the motivations of the organization dramatically.

No, that doesn't fit the narrative. I demand to be either amazed or infuriated.
😅
Ok how bout this
Be INFURIATED that you're not AMAZED
😉
Maybe better to be amazed that you aren't infuriated.
😅 good point!!
And amazingly now I'M infuriated that I didn't think of that first!! 😡
😉
🍻
I’m amazed that you’re infuriated by that? 🤩
Well I'm...
Wait..
I've lost track
Am I supposed to be amazed
Or infuriated 🤔
I’m going with infuriatingly amazed.
🤣
🍻
I'm amazed because you are amazingly infuriating when you were amazed infuriatingly... I dunno...whatever
Infuriazing!
At least he wasn’t hit with a toaster. Seasonal too.
That should work.
🤣

Trump would have definitely get Bubba out quick
Off*

shake and bake
I’m r/MildlyAmaziated.
They did it so their driver could pit if he needed to.
¿Por que no los dos?
Are you a Facebook regular? If so you'll be infuriated by anything Bubba does
In nascar the car company is not really relevant.
Uh, yes it is. The car OEM’s would be a little mad if you didn’t help out another Toyota, ford, or Chevy
Very true.. Never thought of looking at it from that side 🤔
🍻
That's messed up, what was he supposed to do instead?
I agree..Messed up but he was pitting outside his pit box which is a penalty
Drivers have lost wheels shortly after leaving pit road & they have to run a lap then re-pit
Wallace was lucky (?) enuff that the tire left him when he was still on pit road & his crew chief, Bootie Barker, told him to hit a Toyota box
You can run an entire lap after losing a wheel?
I know nothing of nascar...Just seems like a lot more would get screwed up lol
Yes you can
And you know more than you think you do then 😉
I read afterwards that crew chief Bootie Barker knew that they'd get penalized for pitting out of box but he wanted to try to get the tire back on the car so Bubba wasn't running that lap on 3 wheels & damaging the underside & the splitter on the front of the car
So you were right there 😉
🍻
This and Chase Briscos makes me think no one is allowed to use their real names in Nascar because what the hell are these names. What's next? Brandon Tyre? Bubba Tea?
Don't forget about legends like Will Power and Dick Trickle
Well it did start by moonshiners making illegal deliveries in cars modified to hold the extra weight and still escape the federalies
There are probably better names than the Bootie Barker unless you wanted a second gig if things went south lol
My real name is an alliteration, though not with a name like Bubba. I’ve been teased about having a “DC comic name” multiple times >.>
😅 after reading this I realized I didn't know (or had maybe forgotten) Bootie Barkers real name so I googled it
Robert Aldridge Barker III
Really funny thing is at the top, along with a pic of him in a fire suit , Google have him listed as an actor!! 😅
He has one listed role...in Over the Wall, with Tony Stewart 😅
🍻
Don't forget about Anthony Alfredo
Only as long as you attempt to get back to pit road
Its worth mentioning that even if you do, the crew chief and certain pit crew members get suspended temporarily, so its best to make sure its on tight
That i understand. I was more questioning the fact that the car could he fixed in such a manner that it could continue racing.
the penalty for pitting out of the box (drive thru/end of line if under caution) is much less than losing a wheel on track/leaving with out, which is a crew chief suspension next race
if its a left wheel they don't need it cos they only turn left.
I think instead of "left/left" you meant "right/left".
What happens if they just throw that shit in reverse back to their pit? I'm guessing a worse penalty than the lap of shame? Because at that point I'd probably still do it.

Just realized that the pit team is quite literally part of the race..... TIL haha
It's the price of making a mistake. You expect them not to follow the rules because he didn't mean to?
Not lose a wheel. It's a snarky comment but it's the truth. He/his team should be penalized because they didn't properly attach the wheel.
Prepare better. It's for safety. Introduce a nut count on each wheel before leaving the pit, yes - takes time but reduces danger for everyone.
I mean, sure - how about allow pitting outside on the track - what could go wrong.
The need for pitting outside was due to errors made, intentionally or randomly, before he left the pit. And that's what they get punished for.
The pit crew was supposed to put the wheel on properly.
Does it meter though? It was still another teams pit. He was even penalized for it.
You can see one of the pit guys starts the whole process. And gets the others to join in.
Ok... Not sure why you're replying to me with this as I already mentioned it was another teams pit and that he was penalized...
Sorry I read tons of replies an probably had the wrong one selected. 👍
Hey no problem.. I've done it myself
Cheers 🍻
His team and chase Briscoes team also have a technical alliance and very strong ties to one another.
Yes that too
23XI (Wallace) & JGR (Briscoe) do have a technical alliance
does it matter what type of car he is driving ? i thought they all drove like the same car
No there are Fords, Chevys and Toyotas and while different teams are of the same brand they will sometimes band together so they can beat the other brands
🤔
I hope that's not too confusing...
Sure, but I’d say it’s still a show of sportsmanship. They weren’t required to do a damn thing.
I appreciate that you provided some needed context. Still cool to see good sportsmanship regardless of outcome!
Even deeper.
Chase Brisco's teammate is Denny Hamlin, who is the car owner for Bubba Wallace
Good info but I am honestly still happy to see it.
Well, not a direct teammates, but Bubba Wallace's car owner, Denny Hamlin, drives for that team -- JGR. Thanks, what kind of penalty?
What should he have done? Driven a full lap om 3 wheels to get back to his team.
And Hamlin drives for that team and is the co owner of Bubba's team.
Also worth adding that Chase's teammate owns Bubba's car.
And we found out this week that 23XI pays 6 million to JGR for technical support. Least they can do is pop a tire back on!
😅 very true
🍻
I don’t watch racing, but the way he peels out feels like a wave that says “FUCK YEAH THANKS BOYS!”
But yeah...different circumstances
🍻

"It's fixed, now get out of my pit"
It's just as much this. On the real end, you don't want another car in your pit.
GTFO
Can’t park there mate.
I might have brain damage because I find this funny every time (not being sarcastic)
I like to think half of it is Pavlovian. They see a car pull up and automatically start getting its tires right.
I was thinking "Quick! Take the rest of his wheels!"
Just leaves the frame lmao
Next time don't race in Detroit
I mean i wouldn't go back to the same mechanic that let my wheel fall off either
Well that's on him, he took off before they could bolt
But he bolted after they took them off.
Mechanics fucked up. They lowered the car before it was ready to go
Yeah if you watch the clip again the mechanic was trying to tighten the wheel down but the lifter dropped the car back down and before the wheel could be tightened and torqued he was already rolling out. It’s not the drivers fault they’re trained to take off as soon as the car is dropped back down. It was poor communication/coordination within the pit crew
Real life lightning McQueen
So… he bolted?
That's not very typical, I'd like to make that point.
At least he took it out of the environment.
https://youtu.be/3m5qxZm_JqM?si=5G9h7b6t1-X3XzW0
Funnily enough, I’ve actually had the wheel fall off my car because my family mechanic of 20+ years had a teenage nephew working in the shop who didn’t roque it back on after a brake job. I haven’t been back since…
LMFAO
That was wheely nice of them.
Indy ed it was
i see how you got around that one...
These puns just go in endless circles.
well... i'mma bounce on out..
I don’t car.
Bolt of you to say that.

No.

Bubba was told to pit in that box because they are all part of the Toyota family.
He was told to pull into that box for the explicit purpose that they would take care of him.
The tire was the enemy.
r/tiresaretheenemy
nope..
physics. is. always. the. enemy.. and is a heartless bitch.
Old school NASCAR would've taken the other three off.
I was expecting them to remove all four tires, and then bolt all four of them back on.
Sportsmanship at its best .👍
i mean the alternative is their pit being blocked and they’re unable to work on their own car
Also, fellow Toyota car
At least he bought the wheel with him to make it easier!
Jesus fucking Christ that song is awful.
I came o the comments looking for who it is as I LOVE IT! To each his own.
A great clip ruined by bullshit music.
Not gonna hurry but we'll help
They actually scrambled together quite quickly considering the crew wasn't in position for a pit stop at all.
Imagine you're serving dinner to your family, everybody has their plate of food, and you're getting ready to sit down. yeah but this guy brought along some food of his own.
it arrived just after he did.
the pit crew just put it on his plate.

Love this
Why the idiotic music
r/mademesmile
and they tried to kill him with that awful music.
Honorable
Also, get the heck out of here so we can pit our guy
To be fair, he was in their way
This was my immediate cynical thought. There’s no kindness here, just motivated self interest. I am however vaguely disappointed to find someone else point it out when most people didn’t, so take my downvote.
Track crew would have towed the car out. You can clearly see how one of the pit guys starts the process and everyone just follows.
It was sportsmanship for sure.
Do their floor jacks weigh as much as mine? 23 seconds...
Carbon Fiber.
The enshitification is so real, I had to DIG to find a version without shitty background music. God, I hate YT. Anyway, for those of you interested
It’s kinda in their interest to get him out of their pit box, if their driver needs to come in he can’t pit in his own area and will get penalized.
That’s what it’s all about. Bless that team! 🫶🏻
I know very little about motorsports but I do know that was classy AF.
F1 be like Under investigation: Unsafe release
10 second stop go penalty for unsafe release
$50,000 fine for the helping team for touching competitors car
There's a reason they hit them with a harsh penalty for an unsafe release in F1. Go watch Mark Webber's stop at the 2013 German Grand Prix to see why.
"Guys, thanks so much."
"You're welcome bro."
"You guys suck."
"Your mom."
Are we sure they "helped" out of the goodness of their heart and sportsmanship, and not because a car was blocking their pit stop?
Reminds me of "Days of Thunder"
Great popcorn flick. “You look like a monkey fucking a football.” I still use that line.
Best part of the entire movie is the rental car race.
" Harry I think I need to pit"
" You can't we're busy right now"
"Busy? What do you mean busy?"
"We're uhh.. eating ice cream."
" Ice cream?"
“He rubbed ya”
"Rubbin, is rac'n"
Fucking amazing
Its competition, not opposition.
It’s awesome that they fix it for him. Slowly.
You picked a fine time to leave me loose wheel.
Not amazing
they just don't want a car sitting in their car's pit
The fastest way to get it out is to slap a wheel on it
The same wheel that fell off nonetheless.
F1 (and it's regs) enters the chat 😉
Back in the earlier days of Formula 1 teams and drivers would often help each other out with parts and equipment. David Coulthard once raced in Michael Schumacher's spare helmet because DC's kept fogging up.
Maybe they saved him but not like they had any other choice as he would just stay there and block their spot
when the fuck did this trend start of putting annoying music over every single video in the internet
The first shift always taking care of what the third shift leaves behind 😂
They helped, but they helped SLOW
They could’ve gone slower.
