Hi moms!

Im currently within my 33 week. Baby is around 22% percentile for size which isn't horrible but today they noted intermittent absent blood flow to the umbilical cord. Our of 12 times they checked it only did it 3 times. Im now going in twice a week to check. Baby is not IUGR as of yet which I know is common to do blood flow issues. Would love any insight or advice.

  • As someone with similar placenta problem, the moment you can't feel baby moving, go immediately. That's what they told me bc babies who don't get blood flow tend to not move much. Gave birth at 35+5 because of this. Also, you can look at r/nicuparents, there's lot of stories about intermittent absent blood flow. Mine was happening so fast i didn't have time to react.

I second this. I didn’t have a cord problem, but placental issues and IUGR. Any decreased movement, or even a gut feeling that something is off… go in for an NST. The nurses and doctors would much rather see you and it be nothing the for you to wait too long.

OP, are they booking you in for weekly NSTs and ultrasounds? I hope they’ve got a good monitoring plan in place for you. I found my twice weekly tests to be reassuring.

I feel like sometimes the baby is very active and also has rest periods and it does make me nervous.

If it's out of the ordinary, go get checked. Ans i know it's hard but always be proactive. I find our Healthcare needs us to be proactive even after baby is born. Also, i would ask for a NICU tour in case you have to give birth prematurely. Get everything in order. You don't want to be like me, going to my weekly ultrasound and had a baby that evening. Start packing, just be ready.

  • Are you being followed by MFM?

    Yes I am. Twice weekly.

You’re in great hands! I was monitored in Moncton for both of my pregnancies. I didn’t have cord issues though.

My friend delivered her baby at 32w and baby did great!

Thanks! What were you monitored for?

IVF, risk of blood clots, risk of placenta premature aging, and advanced maternal age. I was also on immunosuppressants to conceive and continue my pregnancies from recurrent loss.

  • I did not have intermittent absent blood flow, but I did have an IUGR baby delivered at 36+4 (37 according to the dating scan which was impossible). I was very hesitant to deliver early. She weighed 5lbs and absolutely thrived after delivery. The goal for growth at first is half an ounce per day and she was growing 2-3oz per day. She's now a 50th percentile girly who you would never know was IUGR.

I know it's not 100% the same situation, but hopefully my little story is some comfort.
